MATCH SUMMARY
A bumper crowd of over 2,900 expectantly filtered into Palmerston Park this afternoon in the hope of seeing the side that had thrilled them last season take up where they had left off. However the match turned out to be considerably less entertaining than those enjoyed by so many at the end of 2007/08.

Hazley gets in a decent cross - from Fraser Johnstone
The line up saw Gordon Chisholm stick with the 4-3-1-2 formation with Stephen Dobbie working away just behind O'Connor and Kean. Craig Reid was again given the nod ahead of Andy Aitken and was rewarded with the sponsors man of the match award at the end of the ninety minutes.

The first half saw Queens enjoy the bulk of the possession without really producing much in the way of a threat to the visitors goal. Lot's of long balls up the middle were comfortably dealt with by the Airdrie United centre backs. The best chance in the first half fell to Sean O'Connor as Stephen Dobbie won the ball on the right and made enough room to get in a good cross that evaded everyone until it reached Sean at the back of the six yard box, however his effort was blocked away.

Halliwell gets a grip
Into the second half and Stephen McDougall for Airdrie United made a good run from his own half that set up Joseph Cardle for an effort that flew well past the goals. Queens best chance came a minute later when Sean O'Connor worked himself though and into the penalty area, with Robertson beaten the Airdrie United defenders had to be sharp to get back and get their bodies in the way to deny Sean. Queens upped the tempo for a short spell and from a corner Robertson in the Airdrie United goal was fortunate to be able to fall onto a loose ball as everyone else stood and watched. Craig Barr was next with an effort but his header from a Stevie Tosh cross was well over the bar.

Maybe an arm on the ball here - or maybe clutching at straws!
Paul Di Giacomo then forced a great save out of Bryn Halliwell as he outmuscled Craig Reid and fired in an effort across Halliwell that the 'keeper did very well to get down to and hold on to. Substitutions of McGowan for MacFarlane and Arbuckle for Dobbie did little to change things and it looked pretty certain that the game would end 0-0. Not before Jim Thomson was shown a straight red which appeared to be for a 'last man' challenge on an Airdrie United forward bearing down on goal. Fortunately it was outside the box and resultant free kick was blasted high over the bar.
