MATCH SUMMARY
On a warm sunny day in the Manchester area, sadly just a few yards along the road from where a schoolgirl was found killed yesterday, Queens continued their pre-season build up with a scoring draw against Leigh. Again it was a strong side that started the match, very similar to that which faced Queens Park on Wednesday. With Chris Carr unavailable due to illness Gary Wood came in at centre back whilst their were starting roles for Willie Gibson and John O'Neill in place of Stephen Payne and Brian McLaughlin. Otherwise it was same again to the players who played through the week.

Reid leads the warm up
John O'Neill had a great chance to open the scoring after just three minutes when he beat the offside trap but he delayed too long with a chip and the home keeper was able to get back on his line to save. Leigh had a good first half though and on 9 minutes Steve Brockley flicked a header just wide from six yards after a left sided free kick. David McNiven was facing his old team of course and was keen to make an impression. On 19 minutes he turned and hit very close to the top left corner from all of 25 yards out.In the 35th minute Tommy English inexplicably turned and hammered the ball out for a corner from the opposite side of the park and the error was nearly very costly when the resulting set piece was headed narrowly over by Chris McDonough. That about summed up a low key first half!

The second half was a little livelier though of course beset by the multiple substitutions we've come to expect from friendlies. Surprisingly neither side made any changes at half time but that was soon put to rights as Stephen Payne replaced Gibson (50) and Taylor came on for Leigh (54). Two minutes later McNiven exchanged passes with Bowey and tried an effort from an acute angle which only just missed the target. That was the cue for more changes with Girdleston and Simm on for Shillito and McDowell then Lee-Ellison on for Dunne (59). Finally on 61 minutes it was McLaughlin on for Bowey for Queens.

The game erupted into life on 62 minutes. A tremendous passing move left Stephen Payne with a great chance to break the deadlock only for John Lamb to parry the ball well at his feet. Leigh didn't hang around though and took the lead immediately on the break. A cross from the right side was missed by both defender and striker at the near post but stabbed home off the other post by substitute Chris Simm. Warren Pearson reacted by throwing Paul Burns on for Brian McColligan and, when play restarted, the reaction on the park was for Eric Paton to send O'Neill clear behind the back four again This time his chip beat keeper Lamb but narrowly missed the target.

McNiven slots home
On 69 minutes the home side made yet another two changes with Galloway and Howarth replacing Brockley and Coyne. Three minutes later a fine left sided cross was headed goalward at the back post but Richie Barnard made a flying save. This time though it was Queens who went straight up the other end and scored. Payne's right sided cross was nodded down by O'Neill and forced home by David McNiven. Payne had been sent away after what looked like a clear foul by Wood on Simm had gone unpunished and the two players exchanged a few "words" before carrying on with the action. There was very little action in the final 15 minutes though other than Leigh putting on yet another substitute! Next up Annan.
