MATCH SUMMARY
Queens enjoyed the luxury of a decent pitch tonight, the weather too was conducive to good football as the searing heat of the last few days was cooled by a westerly breeze and a wee bit of cloud. The locals of Annan made the visitors most welcome and with a large number of Annanites also regular Queens supporters the crowd was predominantly supporting the side in blue.

A surprise in the line up was to see former goalkeeper and twice released Stuart Robertson making an emergency comeback to cover for the injured Richie Barnard and youth 'keeper Darren Martin, a regular thing for when Queens meet Annan as the last encounter saw former 'keeper John Hillcoat recalled for the day. As it was Stuart did a superb job in goal and on the rare occasion that he was tested made the necessary saves.

The line up was more experimental than anything we are likely to see start the season as the front line consisted of John O'Neill and Brian McLaughlin, the defence of youngster Gareth Campbell, Chris Carr, Brian Reid and Gary Wood, completing another piece in his one man side - left back. Midfield was missing a number of 'regulars' as Stephen Payne, Scott Robertson, Paul Burns and Willie Gibson helped to keep the average age of the side down.

McLaughlin appeals for a penalty as O'Neill is brought down by Yallop
The first half was one way traffic with Queens cutting through the Annan defence pretty much at will. John O'Neill, Brian McLaughlin and Scott Robertson were revelling in the space afforded them and between them scored four goals - every one a cracker in the first forty five minutes. The first goal came from the head of John O'Neill who rose above the defence to bullet a Stephen Payne free-kick into the back of the net on fifteen minutes. Second goal came from Scott Robertson as he broke through the Annan defence and from half way kept his composure to run onto the 'keeper and slot the ball into the bottom corner for a super-cool finish. Number three was a simply superb volley from the edge of the box from John O'Neill which the keeper didn't even see as it passed him on the way back out and number four was a similar but more delicate curling effort from the same spot from Brian McLaughlin. In between goals three and four Brian Reid had another chalked off for a push on a defender as he rose above the home defence to nod a Willie Gibson free kick into the net.

Robertson strides through to slot home
At half time you would have been forgiven for thinking that Queens could double their tally in the second half, however Annan came out much more determined for the next period and it took a great save from Stuart Robertson to tip a Marc Nicoll pile driver over the bar. Half time had seen two substitutions with Paton on for Campbell and McNiven for O'Neill, the rest of the half was to see numerous changes from both sides although good football was still being played. Annan spurned a glorious chance to equalise when Eric Paton was a mile short with a pass back and only another good block from Robertson prevented a goal but then mid-way through the half the game wrapped up with a beautiful lob from Brian McLaughlin beating Currie in the home goal once again and concluding the scoring at 5-0.

Gibson puts in the effort
All in all it was a good workout with all of the youngsters getting a stint on the park but some established players missing out, Bowser, Lovell, Thomson etc. Hibs on Saturday are sure to provide our sternest test yet this close season.
