MATCH SUMMARY
Both sides fielded primarily second string sides for this opening tie in the Scottish Brewers Trophy but it didn't stop the action from being entertaining for almost the entire ninety minutes. Thirteen goals is as many as any Queens fan will have seen in a competitive match involving the Doonhamers and with Warren Hawke and Alan Hogg both netting hat-tricks the front line options for next season look to be promising for John Connolly.

A healthy crowd, considering the conditions, were served up action from the off and within eight minutes Queens had taken the lead with Mark Patterson lobbing former Queen's youth player Tommy Muirhead in the Galabank sides goals. Thoughts of a runaway victory were put on hold for a few minutes though as Annan struck back through a diving header and then an unfortunate rebound from a Robertson clearance to give the homesters a 2-1 lead.

Alan Hogg then scored an excellent goal as he was fed through on the left and managed to turn and shot past Muirhead to equal the score at 2-2 after just fifteen minutes of play. Two minutes later and Warren Hawke broke through the home defence and calmly stroked the ball into the bottom corner to make it 3-2.

In thirty minutes Queens were awarded a penalty as Hawke was sent tumbling in the box, he took responsibility and stroked the penalty home without any fuss. A couple of minutes later and Jon Sunderland made a good move down the right before crossing wide to Des McKeown, Des passed his marker and put a chest high ball across the face of the goals for Alan Hogg to bundle into the net to make the half time score 5-2.

The second half was similar to the first, primarily Queens dominating against the young Annan side and it took only a couple of minutes for Mark Patterson to repeat his start to the first half with his second goal of the game.

Annan pulled it back to 6-3 before Alan Hogg completed his hat-trick and then was substituted so that John Connolly could have a look at a few of the other faces on the bench. First on were Graham Armstrong and Willie Gibson replacing Hoggie and Mark Patterson and within ten minutes Armstrong and scored an excellent goal to take it to 8-3.

Queens final strike came from Warren Hawke with ten minutes or so left to play but Annan had the final word with a penalty in the closing stages to record a 9-4 scoreline to the Doonhamers.

The final though will be a totally different matter.
