MATCH SUMMARY
A measure of the degree of seriousness Queens took of this "pre-season friendly" was the fact that they fielded a squad of just 13 young players, none of whom was a goalkeeper and only three of whom (Paul Burns, Willie Gibson and Stephen Payne) have ever tasted first team action. The lack of a goalkeeper (for whatever reason?) meant centre half Stuart Hill deputising in goal behind a back four of Richard Maxwell, Paul Burns, 'Trialist' and Mark Whorlow. The midfield comprised Gibson on the left, Scott Robertson and Ross Beattie in the middle and Payne on the right whilst up front were Colin Baird and a 'Trialist'.

To be honest it was a poor quality game lit up by one fabulous first half strike from Stephen Payne who struck into the top left corner from between 35 and 40 yards out, leaving the home keeper no chance. That goal came in 28 minutes but the home side and their No 9 in particular wasted three good chances to equalise before the break.

The first close thing at goal in the second half arrived after fully 70 minutes when Stuart Hill showed exactly why he isn't a goalkeeper and dropped what should have been a relatively easy catch from a corner. The resulting scramble saw Queens hack away from their own goal-line.

On 84 minutes however, Threave equalised completely against the run of play by then. A huge kick out from the home keeper bounced once before looping into the opposing penalty area where it was met by the head of Richard Maxwell. His looping back header sailed over the head of a stranded Hill and into the net for a bizarre own goal. Queens made two late substitutions with Cunliffe and Baty replacing the two strikers but neither changed things much.

In the end, though technically listed as a first team friendly on the fixture list, this turned into very much a reserve team outing with manager Ian Scott not even present. To be fair, it's hard to see what they could possibly have learned from having the first team play a game against Threave's "South" team. I don't think too many of the line up tonight will feature against Dunfermline on Saturday.
