MATCH SUMMARY
Friendly matches are all about getting match fitness and practice - surely the best way to do that is to have eleven men versus eleven men - after all the result doesn't really matter. Well today we saw the extremely unusual sight of a player being red carded in a friendly as David Clarkson was dismissed by the referee in just twenty minutes - no one else seems to have seen what occurred but most thought that it must have been an elbow from the highly rated 'well player that floored Gary Wood. In any case the match was an entertaining one for the fans to view and a four nil victory is something that is always a pleasure to report on.

The line up saw a couple of changes from the side that went down in the cross border derby match last Wednesday evening - Wood replaced Paton at right back, Reid replaced Thomson in the middle of defence whilst Lovell came into the heart of the midfield with Bowser moving wide left and Gibson making way.

Bowser fires into Marshalls hands
The game started out quite quietly and there was very little to report as both sides cancelled themselves out in the middle of the park. It all changed with the sending off of Clarkson in twenty minutes however as Queens exploited their superior numbers to great effect and opened the scoring just a few minutes later. The ever alert David McNiven picked up a ball on the edge of the Motherwell box and strode forward before lashing the ball under the out-rushing Gordon Marshall. A minute later and an English whipped in cross ball was well held by Marshall again as he beat the Queens forwards to cut out the cross.

Payne misses the target
Queens were playing some nice football with Stuart Lovell running things from deep, one move with Lovell and Bowser saw the captain feed David McNiven on the edge of the box and he unselfishly put the ball into the path of John O'Neill for the front man to shoot just over the bar. Then Stephen Payne should have done better as he broke clean through on goal and with only Marshall to beat placed his effort wide of the post and into the side netting to his great dismay. To close the half Stephen Payne hit the bye line down the left and crossed for the inrushing Steve Bowey, however Bowey could only hit it straight at Marshall to the visitors relief. Motherwell had been restricted to very few long range efforts that Richie Barnard had little trouble in collected.

The second half began with Queens still in command and playing the best football. A David McNiven looping header was well held by Marshall who then fluffed his goal kick straight to John O'Neill who immediately returned it but could only put it wide of the post.

Bowser through again
By this time Queens had made three substitutions - McLaughlin for McColligan just before the break, then Lyle for O'Neill fifteen minutes into the half. Just after the second substitution Steve Bowey was in familiar territory once again - clean through with only the 'keeper to beat - same result though - straight at the 'keeper. Queens then swapped Stephen Payne with Eric Paton with Paton staying on the right side of midfield.

Butcher and Malpas are not too happy
The second goal came with half an hour of the second half played. Queens won a free kick on the left and the ball when it was played in was dropped by Marshall for Gary Wood to tidy up the loose end and smash it home. - Four minutes later and a Tommy English cross from the left was met at the back post by a well elevated David McNiven to power home a peach of a goal, only for him to be immediately substituted - his number had been waiting even before he had scored. At the same time Brian Reid made way for Jim Thomson.

Wood slots it home

McNiven flies high to beat Marshall
The final goal came just a further two minutes on with a corner from the left taken by Eric Paton and dropping for Gary Wood to rifle home from just outside the six yard box as Willie Gibson made sure that he didn't touch it.

Woodie finishes them off
The game was undoubtedly spoiled by the uneven numbers, however Queens did play some really good football
