MATCH OFF 27th February 2001
The re-aaraged match versus Arbroath has been called off this morning due to the adverse weather conditions across Scotland. The new date is Tuesday 20th March 2001.
MAN OF THE MATCH 26th February 2001
On loan winger Stuart King takes his second man of the match award in two games with a classy performance against a poor Stirling Albion side on Saturday, for his troubles Kingy ended up with an ankle knock that has ruled him out of tomorrow nights planned league clash with Arbroath, although that match is also in doubt due to the extreme weather conditions in the central belt, Mark Angel replaces him in the squad. Check back tomorrow before setting off if you plan to make the trip to the north east.

Second place goes to Andy Aitken who makes up some ground in the Player of the Season league table and third to goalscorer Graham Connell.

Updates on the Player of the Season league table to follow tomorrow evening.

SHOCK RESULT - 2 25th February 2001
The winner of the competition to find the best looking gent at Palmerston attracted over 2000 votes and revealed a few surprises, as most people will know by now the overall winner was Phil Nixon, the other positions were less publicised though so for the record David Mathieson came in second with Andy Aitken third and golden oldie Des McKeown a creditable fourth. The biggest surprise was the large number of votes cast for manager John Connolly placing him well inside the top ten, a case of the blue rinse brigade out at the polls in force maybe!
SHOCK RESULT 24th February 2001
A last minute strike at the Islecroft Stadium saw the hosts Dalbeattie Star produce the shock of the season in South League football as they secured a narrow 3-2 victory over Queens reserves. Queens scorers were Boyle and Milne.
TRAVEL CLUB 23rd February 2001
As pointed out by Ross Corbett on the Message Board, the Travel Club bus to Arbroath on Tuesday 27th February will leave Dumfries at 3.30pm, anyone interested please contact Jim McCormick on 01387 270102.
GRETNA'S GAIN 23rd February 2001
Bryan Caldwell has today left the club and joined up with former manager Rowan Alexander and many former players, Cleeland, Irvine, Suddick, Young, Dobie, Potts etc. at Gretna. There is no fee involved and all at Palmerston wish Bryan good luck with the Unibond first division side.
WEEKEND PREVIEW 23rd February 2001
It's a big game at Palmerston this weekend as Queen's take on second bottom Stirling Albion in what is without doubt a real 'six pointer'. With Albion seven points behind and having played the same number of matches a victory for Queens would help to pull the Doonhamers a full ten points clear of the Binos and hopefully close the gap on the three above, Queen's Park, Berwick and Clydebank. Defeat however would see a reduction in the gap to just four points and ensure a nervous run in for the Palmerston side.

Team news from Thursday night's training session is that Mark Angel drops out of the squad as he has a viral infection whilst Alan Hogg replaces him in the squad. Stuart King picked up a knock during training on Tuesday and was a worry for this weekend, however an intensive session with the Preston Physio has worked wonders and Stuart has confirmed that he is fit and available for selection. All other players are available for selection with no suspension worries.

We have met Stirling twice this season already and have the upper hand so far with a goalless draw back in August followed up with a 1-0 win thanks to a Warren Hawke strike in October. Stirling are also suffering a fixture backlog thanks to canceled matches and a run in the Cup which came to an end last Saturday in the fog at Forthbank where SPL side Hibs escaped with a narrow 3-2 victory even after playing against a ten man Stirling side for eighty minutes. Boss Ray Stewart will be hoping that his side can start to show some of that battling cup form in the league.

Albion will be without the injured ex-Stranraer player Ian McAuley whilst Neil Bennett and Andy Whiteford are also injured and John Millar is suspended. Skipper Kevin Gaughan, despite being red carded in the cup returns for the league.
MAN OF THE MATCH 19th February 2001
New 'on-loan' signing Stuart King has made an immediate impression with the travelling fans as he is awarded Saturday's Man of the Match award for his debut scoring performance at the National Stadium. It was a dream debut for the Preston North End winger who says Hampden was the perfect place to score his first full team goal and that it is one he will always remember.

Second in the voting came Peter Weatherson who also scored one of the best goals scored by a Queens player for some time and third was Mr Reliable Paddy Atkinson who put in another commanding performance at right back.

The full list of scores were as follows and the Player of the Season league table has also been updated with this weekend's scoring, go there via the MoM link.

BATTLE ROYAL 16th February 2001
It's back to the National Stadium tomorrow and to league duty when Queens travel to the South side of Glasgow to take on Queen's Park. It will be a very different Queen's side that starts the match from the last visit back in August when a thirtieth minute Kevin Finlayson goal separated the two sides, indeed there could be as many as six changes to the side that started that day as John Connolly has pruned his side to make way for more suitable players.

The last meeting of the two Queen's was just five matches back for the Doonhamers although it was before Christmas, again the danger man for the Spiders was Kevin Finlayson and it was he who equalised Peter Weatherson's eight minute goal just a minute later to secure the eventual draw.

It will undoubtedly be more of the same tomorrow and a close encounter is anticipated, although the Doonhamers go into the match in confident mood after actually playing some football in the past week, in terms of team selection John Connolly only has Denis Boyle and Steven Skinner out although Paul Kinnaird remains under 100% due to his toe injury, new signing Stuart King is available for selection as is Mark Angel and Ronnie McQuilter who will miss next season's first match in the Scottish Cup following his sending off on Monday night.
RE-ARRANGED FIXTURES 15th February 2001
The dates have been released for the re-arranged matches against Arbroath - 27th February, Stenhousemuir - 6th March, Clydebank - 13th March, Berwick Rangers - 25th March (Sunday - 2.00pm) and Forfar Athletic - 27th March. So March will be a very busy month with two games per week and with a game against Berwick on Sunday 25th then two days later against Forfar.

The fixture list has been updated to reflect all of these changes.
QUEEN'S NEW KING 15th February 2001
John Connolly has taken further steps today to strengthen the squad for what will be an arduous run in with the on-loan signing of winger Stuart King from Preston North End, pending International clearance. Stuart is a nineteen year old Northern Irish Schoolboy and Youth international who made his debut for Preston when only seventeen.

He was out on loan earlier in the seaon at Ross County where he made two appearances from the substitutes bench, on both occassions replacing Paul Kinnaird.

MAN OF THE MATCH 14th February 2001
Despite missing a penalty five minutes from time Peter Weatherson has been voted as the best Queens player on the night by the Internet Fan Club members, it was a close call this week with Andy Aitken taking a very close second place and Warren Hawke a very close third.

The results help to consolidate Peter Weatherson as our top performer in the Player of the Season League Table see the MoM link. All the other scores were as follows:

ARBROATH ARRANGEMENTS 13th February 2001
Those of you who attended the abandoned Arbroath versus Queens match on Saturday and will not be able to attend the re-arranged match can obtain a refund from the office at Palmerston. Hand in the voucher that you were given at Gayfield and Queens will reimburse your admission fee.
BUSY BOARDROOM 12th February 2001
It was a bit of a who's who of football this evening in the boardroom at Palmerston with Bryan Robson and Gordon McQueen from Middlesborough, Alex McLeish from Hibs, Tommy McLean from Dundee United and Paul Hegarty. Another interested spectator was a scout from Manchester City.

Former Queens stalwart Alan Davidson was also present to take in his first Queens match for some time.
GAME ON 11th February 2001
At this moment in time the postponed third round cup tie versus Airdrie looks like going ahead tomorrow evening with a 7.30pm kick off. Palmerston is playable at the moment after a good drying day today, if there is any change due to overnight rainfall then we will post a statement here, again at this time there is not an inspection planned.

John Connolly tells us that he will go with the same squad as Saturday with the exception of Mark Angel who is of course ineligible, that also means both David Mathieson and Colin Scott in the squad although no decision has been made on who will start as yet.
MATCH ABANDONED 10th February 2001
After 37 minutes of play and with the score at 1-1 the match at Arbroath was abandoned due to adverse weather conditions. Queen's goal had been scored by Jon O'Neill in the second minute and Colin Scott made his first start ahead of David Mathieson who was on the bench.
PREVIEW 9th February 2001
Team news remains as it was on Wednesday evening although it is now confirmed that Alan Hogg will miss tomorrow's match at Arbroath due to a transferred suspension from his Ashington days.

The match against Arbroath is a critical one, the Red Lichties are on form at the moment with only two defeats in the past eighteen and with two former Doonhamers expected to play they will have an added incentive to succeed. Their favourite result looks to be a draw with ten of the last eighteen even so a tight match is in prospect. News from the Arbroath camp is that Stevie Mallan, Colin McGlashan and Kevin Fotheringham all miss out due to suspensions although new loan signing Colin McDonald from Falkirk may well play.

The Gayfield surface is said to be in good condition for the match and the Queen's squad will leave Dumfries early tomorrow morning for the journey up to the East Coast.

Another point to note is that the league clash away at Berwick Rangers has now been re-arranged for Sunday 25th March 2001 with a 3.00pm kick-off. There is a Scotland international on the Saturday and both sides agreed to the fixture on the Sunday.
SNIPPETS 7th February 2001
The word coming back from Arbroath is that this Saturday's planned league clash versus the Red Lichties looks set to go ahead. It's still a few days away but the pitch is said to be in a good condition at this time. Queens will have Martin Hughes, Danny Patterson, Warren Hawke and Mark Angel all in the squad for the match but Steven Skinner is struggling with a hamstring injury and Denis Boyle will be out for a few weeks yet.

Our programme next week is totally up in the air with the match versus Airdrie planned for Monday evening at Palmerston, if it does not go ahead then it will be Wednesday and if not then Saturday, fourth round day. If Queens win on Monday or Wednesday then its Peterhead in the fourth round on Saturday but if we lose we go to Hampden to take on Queen's Park in the scheduled league match.

This Saturday's reserve league match against the Crichton has been switched to the Crichton with a 2.00pm kick off to save the Palmerston pitch giving the Airdrie cup tie the maximum chance to get the go ahead.
PRINCE OF PALMERSTON 6th February 2001
You will have noticed the posters around town asking all females to vote for their "Prince of Palmerston", the competition is aimed at encouraging more female fans along to Palmerston and is being run in conjunction with the Dumfries and Galloway Standard with sponsorship from Jacquies Health and Beauty and browns.

MATCH OFF 6th February 2001
The Airdrie Cup tie has been postponed after a morning inspection at Palmerston, the new date is next Monday 12th February.
CUP PREVIEW 5th February 2001
After the weekend snow and then thaw, Palmerston Park was in a bit of a state this morning as the ground staff turned in for work. In front of them lay a very wet pitch which had cut up badly during the Partick Thistle match and was in need of extensive repairs.

Hopefully following a night of volunteer forking and kind weather tomorrow the match will be played tomorrow evening.

Team news from Palmerston is that Warren Hawke has recovered sufficiently to return to the squad Danny Patterson and Martin Hughes are also included, out though is Mark Angel who was not signed within the fourteen days required for a Scottish Cup tie.

Manager John Connolly told us, "The clash with Airdrie was always going to be a difficult one, their players have settled in well now and have improved as the season has gone along. There is, of course a big incentive for both teams with the next round tie also being at home so hopefully the players will rise to the occasion".

Check back on the site tomorrow just to make sure that everything is okay for the 7.30pm kick off.
MAN OF THE MATCH 5th February 2001
Top men for Queens on Saturday as voted by you were Paddy Atkinson and Jon Sunderland both tying on 6.5, it's well overdue recognition for the adaptable Atkinson and also recognises the hard work that Jon Sunderland has been putting in as he adjusts to the Scottish game. Peter Weatherson is never far away, even when he doesn't get a sniff of a goal, this week he comes in third and increases his lead in the Player of the Season League Table.

CONNOLLY - "THE BEST EVER" 4th February 2001
Queens Press Officer Bill Goldie had a ten minute chat to Partick manager John Lambie before the match yesterday, during the discussions John Lambie told Bill that he reckoned that John Connolly was the best player that he had ever played alongside.

We also hear that Graham Connells best friend is an Olympic Judo player, Graham was in Australia for the Olympics in the summer and also that Jon O'Neill's Celtic debut was against Manchester United at Old Trafford in front of a capacity crowd.
WEEKEND PREVIEW 2nd February 2001
Manager John Connolly tells us tonight that he is delighted to get the side back into action with the visit of league leaders Partick Thistle to Palmerston on Saturday afternoon. "It's not been the ideal preparation, one game in four weeks, particularly when you are facing the team who are unbeaten in their last fifteen league matches". That unbeaten run stretching back to September when the last team to beat the Jags were the now managerless Clydebank.

"A long lay off like that does without doubt affect the players, full match fitness is impossible when you can only train on frozen pitches or indoor, the players will undoubtedly be a bit rusty". It may also be a much changed midfield with the likes of Jon O'Neill, Mark Angel, David Milne and Graham Connell all challenging for a spot. Upfront Alan Hogg will be available for selection although he will have to miss out next Saturday's match at Arbroath due to a transferred suspension and Steven Skinner will miss out after picking up a slight injury last weekend.

Other news from John Connolly this evening is that Paul Kinnaird makes the squad after coming through training last night despite his broken toe and Denis Boyle will certainly miss out after quite badly gashing his knee, again in training. Better news is that Warren Hawke trained last night and will hopefully be back in contention for a first team place in a couple of weeks.

"The league is our main concern, we have fallen behind in games played and the two below us have picked up a few points, getting results in the league is our main concern and that is the only thing that we are looking at at the moment."

News form league leaders and the Bells Manager of the Month for January John Lambie's Partick Thistle side is that they too have a few injury worries with Ian Cameron, Danny Lennon, Brian Hamilton, Stephen Docherty and George Shaw all possible spectators tomorrow.

The last two encounters have been won by Partick but only by the odd goal in three so it should be all to play for at Palmerston tomorrow with what should be the best attendance of the season so far as Partick take over two thirds of the East Stand.
CUP RULES CHANGED 2nd February 2001
The SFA Emergency Committe issued the following statement this morning:

"The SFA Emergency Committee today agreed to temporarily amend the Cup Competition Rules to allow the late registration of 16 players of Airdrieonians FC for the Third Round of the Tennent's Scottish Cup.

The decision was made in the interests of fair play, and taking into account the fact that the players were registered 14 days prior to the date fixed for the Third Round, and had been registered continuously by the club since the start of the season.

The Committee accepted that the lapse in continuous registration of the players in respect of the Cup Competition Rules was not an attempt to gain competitive advantage, but was brought about by the peculiar circumstances of the interim liquidation of the club.

All clubs, and in particular those who are in administration or interim liquidation, will be reminded of the need to adhere to the specific terms of the Cup Competition Rules.

Notes:
Under the Cup Competition Rules, a player must have been registered for a club for the fourteen days immediately preceding the date fixed for playing the round."
THE BOSS IS BACK 1st February 2001
John Connolly was present at training tonight after returning from his overseas assignment

News from the training pitch is that Warren Hawke will certainly miss out on Saturday whilst both Paul Kinnaird, with a broken toe picked up in private training and Steven Skinner with a hamstring injury are both minor concerns although both trained tonight and should be available for selection.

Also available on Saturday will be three of the most recent signings of Jon O'Neill, Graham Connell and Mark Angel although Alan Hogg is a bit of a doubt at present.

We should also know tomorrow whether Airdrie will be able to field a full strength team on Tuesday evening or not, although a number of those not registered have not featured recently for the Diamonds.
