Cup fever 30th November 2007
Cup fever is already gripping Linlithgow and their club secretary, David Roy, is predicting a mass exodus to Dumfries on Saturday 12th, January. Said David, "We've only got a population of around 15,000 but the whole town's already buzzing. We've already had TV cameras through the town centre filming and it all helps to build up an atmosphere. There's a lot of excitment even though the match is still six weeks away.

"Obviously some of our young players were hoping for the likes of Hearts or Hibs with Edinburgh only 18 miles away, but we've got a First Division club with a long history and I'm happy at that".

Added David, "I've been secretary up here for 48 years and while serving as President of the Scottish Junior Football Association got to know Willie Harkness very well. Willie was President of the S.F.A. at that time and invited us down for a Sunday friendly match, which we actually won, 2-0. I knew his wife Jean as well who, I'm pleased to hear, is still going strong. I also met his brother, Sam and I'm led to believe that his son Tommy is a director of Queen of the South and carrying on the Harkness connection at the club.

"I met the present Queens' Chairman, David Rae, at the cup draw at Hampden yesterday and we had a good old chat, but no doubt we'll be talking more before the big day".

As a football team, Linlithgow Rose come with a good pedigree. Five times Scottish Junior Cup winners and current holders of the recently formed Super League East--a title they also won in 2005.

The town's historic claim to fame is that Linlithgow Palace was the birthplace of the ill-fated, Mary Queen of Scots.

Local men 30th November 2007
Many Queens fans avidly follow the fortunes of the national side and, with the resignation of Alex Mcleish, it was interesting to read in the national press that two local men are on the SFA committee that will decide who is to be the new man at the helm. Former Queens secretary Dick Shaw [now at Annan Athletic] has a seat via his long association with the Southern Counties F.A. while John Gold [often seen at Palmerston] represents the Scottish Schools F.A. who he has been associated with for many years.

Team News 29th November 2007
As expected, they'll be little change in the line-up for Saturday's match against Clyde at Broadwood following our impressive victory at Peterhead in the Scottish Cup. Said Gordon Chisholm, "We've almost a full squad available with onlyJim Lauchlan missing and I've never had the luxury of saying that this season. Jim has seen a specialist and could be back in a couple of weeks time".

Cup draw reaction 29th November 2007
Queens will tread new ground come the 12th of January when Linlithgow Rose visit Palmerston in the next round of the Scottish Cup. As a Junior side they will be somewhat of an unknown quantity but all at Palmerston insist they'll be treated with the utmost respect. They beat Dalbeattie Star 1-0 in the previous round and will no doubt be all out to cause a cup upset and the tie should create a decent media interest.

Confessed manager, Gordon Chisholm, "I always said I wanted a home tie and that's what we've got, so I'm very pleased with that. They're an unknown quantity but one of the top Junior sides in the country so we'll treat them with the respect they deserve and take nothing for granted.

"We'll have them 'watched' as we do with all Division One clubs and ensure our preparation is spot-on as I'm not wanting any cup upsets. Linlithgow are in the draw on their own merit and we won't underestimate them".

Added Chairman, David Rae, "I'm happy with the draw and it gives us a great chance to progress to the next round and get one of the 'big guns' and a decent financial reward.

However, we can't afford to take anything for granted and if we don't win we'd only have ourselves to blame. It's at Palmerston for a change but it means four home matches in the space of 17 days which will certainly keep our groundsman, Kevin, busy over the holiday period".

Our keeper, Jamie MacDonald, is looking forward to the cup clash for personal reasons and says, "Linlithgow is practically 'on my doorstep' and I've seen them play quite a few times this season and they're not a bad side.

"One of my best mates, Robbie Feeney, actually plays for them and only yesterday we were having a laugh and a bit of a banter as to what would happen if we were drawn together. He's a striker and was bragging at how many goals he'd put past me but 'he who laughs last laughs longest!

"But, joking apart we can't afford to underestimate them, but I know full well the manager would never let that happen".

Ross Corbett, Chairman of the Travel Club, was a bit disappointed and stated, "It's not what I would have chosed and it's no 'money spinner', but I'm sure they're well supported and could bring about 500 down with them. We'll be favourites to go through to the next round but we can't afford to take it easy".

Old rattler 29th November 2007
Another great bit of memoralbilia was handed in to the Globe Inn [Howff] for the attention of the Doonhamer fans who drink there in the shape of a rattle from the 1960s. The owner Mr Bert Hastings was given it [when he was only five] by his dad who had it made specially for the cup-tie against the Jambos [Queens record crowd game]. Hopefully big Blacko our museum curator can find a place for it at Palmerston.

'Burnsy' extends his contract 28th November 2007
Paul Burns signed a two year extension to his existing contract this afternoon which binds him to the club until the summer of 2010. The 23-year-old midfielder, who hails from Cumnock, graduated to the senior ranks via our youth system, and made his 100th first team appearance only a few weeks ago.

Said manager, Gordon Chisholm, "Burnsy has been with us now since 2002 so I'm pleased to get him signed up again for another couple of years. He's been out recently with ankle trouble but I was glad to see him back again for the Peterhead cup-tie. He was one of our best players and grabbed a goal into the bargain. He came up through the club's youth system and I feel that developing our own players is now the way forward to ensure a successful future for Queen of the South".

Added Paul himself, "I'm just delighted to get it all signed and sealed and it will ensure me another two and a half years at Palmerston. I was glad to get back into action again on Saturday and an extra bonus was scoring a goal. I'm proud to be affiliated to such a good club! We've a good set of lads and the atmosphere in the dressing-room is as good as I've seen it".

That's dedication for you! 28th November 2007
The latest addition to the Palmerston Museum is an attractive clock donated by a Miss Mae Paterson from Ayrshire. It was presented to her grandfather, M.J. Paterson from 'Members and Friends of Queen of the South F.C.' on the occasion of his marriage on February 9th, 1893.

This, of course, referred to Queen of the South Wanderers who were formed in 1873, 46 years before the Queen of the South that we all know came into being in 1919.

Matthew lived in Kirkcudbright and actually walked all the way to Dumfries for home games, played in the match, then walked back home again--a round trip of over 50 miles. That's what you call dedication!

It makes the 480 mile journey by coach up to Peterhead and back at the weekend pale into significance.

'Bully-Wee' bound 27th November 2007
Following Saturday's marathon trek to Peterhead, Broadwood will seem just a 'short hop' for those heading for the Clyde match at the weekend. We've already met the 'Bully Wee' twice this season--losing 1-0 away in the Challenge Cup and drawing 1-1 in the league at Palmerston. So a win would be most welcome and would see us move above Clyde in the table.

Said Gordon Chisholm this afternoon, "At Palmerston Clyde were probably worth the draw but the chances were there for us to have won it. I watched them play Dundee recently and they were very strong in defence so I think it will be another close encounter. But, if we play as well as we did in the cup against Peterhead, we could take all three points.

"However, consistency is what I'm after! Recent weeks have brought their highs and lows, but it's no good going out and beating league leaders, Hamilton, and then losing to Morton a week later. What we must strive for is a good run of results to take us up the table. Most of the sides in our league are so evenly matched there's nothing in it.

"It's a long time since Queens last scored five goals and that's something I'd like to build on. After we'd weathered the initial storm at Peterhead we controlled the game and played with a lot of confidence. Everything seemed to click and we scored some really good goals, some engineered from the middle of the park, which pleased me.

"We kept a 'clean sheet', something we've never managed to do since we beat Morton at Cappielow three months ago and that says it all. But no two matches are the same--you only take out of a game what you put into it. So it's all up to ourselves!".

'Tosher' torment for James 27th November 2007
One of the happiest Queens' players at the weekend was Stevie Tosh. Not only did he help us to a resounding 5-0 victory over Peterhead, which saw him get a high-star rating from the press, but his home town team, Raith Rovers, beat Threave Rovers by the same score at Castle Douglas.

Despite a missed chance in the early stages our on-loan player at Meadow Park, young James Baty had a good game, but reckons he'll have to wear ear-muffs now for at least a month as 'Tosher' will never let him live it down.

YOUTH INITIATIVE REPORT 27th November 2007
QOS 14s v Alloa Athletic 14s

This was always going to be a difficult match for QOS as Alloa are a strong side with lots of talent. However, QOS shot out of the blocks and opened the scoring within 90 seconds. Johnstone going on a mazy run down the right flank before cutting in and crossing for Hanlon to head in at the far post. QOS doubled their lead after 7 minutes play, Johnstone battled well to retrieve the ball on the edge of the box and instinctively sent in a high dipping half-volley just under the bar. The same player scored his second and QOS's third on 28 minutes when he tapped in from close range after a good cross from Binney. In the second period Alloa fight back and reduced their deficit with the granting of a soft penalty which was converted to bring them back into the game. Once again Johnstone restored the differential with the goal of the game. Picking up the ball 22 yards out, he unleashed a thunderbolt which was still rising as it hit the net. The third period again found Alloa strong and unsurprisingly they pulled another goal back with a shot from the edge of a crowded box. Undaunted, QOS continued to play good football and secured the points with ten minutes left when Hanlon drilled in from 14 yards after being played in by Johnstone. Alloa scored a goal deep into stoppage time to complete the scoring for the day. The boys can now enjoy their winter as they have had a very good first half of the season. Well done to all the squad!

This was the only game played at the weekend and the Youth Initiative programme now shuts down till early in 2008. The coaches and players take this opportunity of thanking everyone for their support so far, look forward toseeing them all agin in 2008 and wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Cup aftermath 25th November 2007
The big question on all Queens' fans lips following their 5-0 humiliation of Peterhead at Balmoor Stadium on yesterday was 'When last did Queens win 5-0 or more away from home in the Scottish Cup?'. And the answer--in January 1952 when we actually beat Brechin City 6-0 at Glebe Park with Walter Rothera (4), Jim Patterson and Jackie Oakes the scorers!

The draw for the next round takes place on Thursday at 12.30 so we took the opportunity to phone round and see who we all wanted in the 4th round.

First up was Chairman, Davie Rae who said, "I'd like a home tie against a side from a lower division which would give us a good chance to progress further in the competition. Alternatively, and purely for financial reasons, I'd go for the 'Old Firm' or one of the Edinburgh big two away from home.

"But what I don't want is Ross County, Cove, Huntly or even Brechin City away from home! It would mean another long trip north and we've had enough of that travelling to Peterhead. I'd rather have Glasgow Rangers than Cove Rangers!.

"Saturday was the best we've played all season and I was pleased with the lads--we had no failures. They did the club proud and I'm sure the fans would be delighted to see the goals going in. It would make their journey home a bit more bearable".

Gordon Chisholm was still up in his own little 'blue heaven' when we spoke to him. Said the manager, "It was great that our strikers, 'Dobbs' and big Sean got two apiece and I was pleased to see 'Burnsy' on the scoresheet as well, after just coming back from injury. I don't know when last Queen of the South scored five goals away from home in the Scottish Cup without reply but I'm sure someone will tell me?". You know now 'Chis'!

As far as the cup draw is concerned the manager admitted, "I'll take any side as long as it's at Palmerston".

Assistant manager Kenny Brannigan would love Celtic at Parkhead, while our physio, John Kerr (who actually predicted the correct score yesterday) chose Cove Rangers at home and added, "They're a side I think we could beat and it would get us into the next round where the really big money is".

Club skipper Jim Thomson could only echo his manager's words and stressed, "A home tie is all I'm asking for. We fear no side at Palmerston". But Stevie Tosh was more concerned at getting through to the latter stages than who we get next. But when pushed agreed, "Linlithgow Rose or Cove Rangers would do fine, it would give us an opportunity to go further".

Our supporters also got their say. Jim Harkness of the New Bazaar Doonhamers opted for Celtic at Parkhead, Steve Johnstone admitted he'd settle for either of the 'Old Firm'--home or away, while local journalist, Colin Paterson chose Hibs at Easter Road or Hearts at Tynecastle.

Bruce Wright from the Globe Inn Doonhamers wanted Rangers or Celtic away with Eric Fisher of the 'Mad' Website rooting for either Gretna or Rangers at Palmerston. Chairman of the travel Club, Ross Corbett said he'd go for either the 'Gers' or the 'Hoops' at home adding, "We just might have a chance at home and it would be a 'sell-out' crowd" but Gordon Harper confessed, "I'd go for Hearts away as I've never seen Queens play at Tynecastle".

For a female point of view we contacted Jacquline MacDonald (our keeper's mum) who said, "It would have to be Hearts for me, but at Tynecastle, which would bring more money into Palmerston while Sandra Brown, secretary of the QOS Fan Club, would like to see Kilmarnock back at Dumfries.

So, it's a matter of 'just wait and see' come Thursday.

Record defeat 25th November 2007
This Saturday 1st December is the 45th anniversary of Queens record defeat by Dundee [10-2] at Dens Park. It was one apiece [John Murphy for Queens] when keeper George Farm was injured to be replaced by wee Willie Morrison. The full back was later replaced by the taller wing half [what's that the young fans will ask] Stan Anderson all to no avail as the Taysiders reached double figures. The Doonhamers other goal was scored by Neil Martin.

Match Reaction 24th November 2007
It was a blue day for the 'Blue Toon' this afternoon as Queens coasted to an impressive 5-0 victory over Peterhead to clinch a place in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup. And we now have the chance of a match against one of the 'big boys' when the draw is made next week.

It was an error from veteran defender Bobby Mann in the 26th minute that allowed Stephen Dobbie in for the opener. And say what you like about his work rate but the guy can certainly score goals. Strike partner San O'Connor made it 2-0 just before the interval when he slotted home a Bob Harris cross to give us a comfortable interval lead. When big Sean got the third early in the second half it was all over bar the shouting and the 'icing on the cake' was Dobbs grabbing a fourth and Paul Burns making it a 'nap hand' in the closing minutes. Peterhead missed from the penalty spot between our third and fourth goals to round off a bad day for the homesters.

Said a delighted Gordon Chisholm afterwards, "I was relieved to get this game out of the road as it could have been a potential 'banana skin'. When Sean missed a chance early on I thought - Oh no it's going to be one of those days again. But the two goals in the first half settled us and we won easily in the end. It was good to get Eric Paton and Paul Burns back, Burnsey gives us that bit extra dimension and I was pleased to see him get a goal". In the next round the manager would like a home tie against one of the big clubs and added, "It would be great for the Chairman and for our fans. It was a five and a half hour trip up the road for our supporters and they've got the same long journey back home tonight. So I'm really pleased we got the right result this afternoon and they saw some goals go in. They deserve it!

This was the first time we've scored five goals since August 2002 when we beat St.Mirren 5-3 at Paisley in the semi-final of the Challenge Cup and our biggest league win for thirteen years. That was 6-0 in December 1994 at home to Arbroath with Tommy Bryce netting a hat-trick in 1m 46secs.

The draw for the fourth round of the cup will take place on Thursday of this week.

Team News 22nd November 2007
Jim Lauchan, David Bingham and David Nixon will all be missing for the cup-tie at Peterhead. Lauchan is still suffering from a groin strain while Bingham and Nixon will not feature as both are 'on loan' and their respective clubs, Gretna and Motherwell, don't want them 'cup-tied' for later in the competition.

But manager, Gordon Chisholm added, "We've had the OK from Hearts to play Jamie MacDonald and Jamie Mole and that's good. Eric Paton and Paul Burns both trained this week and are in contention for a place. Eric was on for an hour against Fleet Star last week and did well and I'm delighted at that".

'The Annan Lad' 22nd November 2007
Andy Aitken's 'Testimonial Committee' re-convened last night and it was announced that four more helpers have been co-opted on--Ross Corbett, Chairman of the Travel Club: Jim Swan, another Travel Club member who is also very actively involved in the Action Group; Ian Black, curator of the Palmerston Museum and Ian McLatchie, proprietor of the Queens' Hotel at Lockerbie.

To celebrate the 'Andy Aitken 2008 Testimonial Year' which officially commences on January 1st it was agreed that the theme should be 'The Annan Lad' but even before the turn of the year there's a great deal of planning and negotiations to take care of.

Further arrangements were made for the Speakers' Dinner to be held at the Crichton's Easterbrook Hall on Saturday, 12th April and it was also suggested that three or four fan based nights should be held throughout the year.

Said committee member, Craig Watson, "We want as many sponsors as possible involved! A Race Night/Disco is planned for Saturday, 9th February, and we're looking for a good response. We're expecting Andy's official Testimonial Match will take place sometime in the Autumn but the opposition hasn't yet been finalised.

"In the pre-season we're contemplating another testimonial game with Andy's home town, Annan, a possible venue. For this we'd like to get some of his old Queen of the South team-mates to pull on a jersey again and we'll be contacting as many as possible to see if they'd play. Norman Blount is on holiday at present but he has arrangements for a golf competition in hand which will be held at the Dumfries and Galloway club.

"So, we're progressing well! Andy has been a great servant to Queen of the South and we all want the best for him".

Anyone interested in sponsorship of any kind and for any further information please contact Craig Watson (07793 317524) or Ian McLatchie (07764 349549).

Countdown to the Cup 22nd November 2007
We continue our 'Countdown to the Cup' today with Chairman, David Rae, giving his views on the Peterhead tie. Said Davie, "I stated when the draw was first made--it's not the tie we would have chosen. It's away from home and it's a long journey but we'll just have to get on with it. I was present at the actual draw myself and they were only four teams left--Peterhead, Queens Park, Airdrie United and ourselves and, without being disrespectful I would have preferred one of the other two simply because of such a long journey and an overnight stay.

"I've spoken to the Peterhead secretary, George Moore, before and he was very pleasant. I believe our officials are to be invited for a pre-match lunch prior to kick-off which is a really nice gesture. We're leaving nothing to chance though and will be setting off at 12.30 on Friday and staying overnight in Aberdeen. We've already been knocked out of two cups in the opening round thie season, so I want it to be 'third time lucky' for us.

"I was talking to the Morton Chairman, Douglas Rae, at our last home game and he told me they'd met them in a cup game in early season and had to fight all the way to get a result. But we all know it will be hard as they've got big Bobby Mann and several other seasoned professionals on their books now.

"However, we're going up there after a win although a draw wouldn't be just too bad, as we could do with a decent home cup gate this season.

"Like every other Scotland football supporter I was bitterly disappointed to see them lose to Italy on Saturday and fail to qualify the European Championship after such a hard-fought campaign. After a poor first half we came into the game more after the interval and had Jamie McFadden only made better contact near the end when he was clean through, it could well have been 2-1 for Scotland. In fact it reminded me a lot of Queens! They were 'caught cold' in early on for the opening goal and in the final minute a dreadful free-kick decision led to Italy's winner".

Queens Match Ball 22nd November 2007
On Tuesday this week the Queens v Rangers match-ball was 'doon the water' at Seamill Hydro, meeting up once again with Crawford Boyd - a long serving stalwart of Queens central defence.
Crawford signed for Queens from his home town team Largs Thistle in 1972. Amongst those joining the club at the time were Rab Thorburn from Johnstone Burgh and current Queens Director Keith Houliston, who signed from Queens Park.

It is said that 'Craw' was a great player to have on your side, hard as nails and totally determined. He would run through a brick wall for you and took it as a personal affront if a player beat him.

He made his debut in the League Cup at home to Aberdeen on August 12th 1972. The 'Dons won the game 4-0 in front of a crowd of 5,000 and it was felt that the scoreline did not reflect the quality of the Queens side that day - then managed by player/coach Jim Easton.

Craw with the signed ball
"I signed for Willie Harkness after a trial game at Hurlford Juniors. Queens were the first senior team to talk to me and it was great to move up a level. I believe that you should try and play at the highest level possible and it was a dream come true to, all of a sudden, be playing in the League Cup against the likes of Aberdeen, Hibs and Queens Park."

Once in the side 'Craw' was hard to displace, although he did have a spell on the sidelines having suffered a broken leg whilst training with his local amateur team Largs United.

"In my first year at the club I trained with Kilmarnock then, subsequently with Morton for the remainder of my time with Queens. I also trained locally with Largs on some nights and I broke my leg at one of their sessions."

He lists Allan Ball as the best goalkeeper he played with "by a country mile" and recalls the great quality in the squad during his time at Palmerston.

"Jimmy Miller, Tommy O'Hara, Ian Reid, Billy McLaren and John Dempster were all class players. Billy had that steely edge about him that you need in your team."

His most memorable game was the same as many fans of that era - the 5-4 cup replay victory over Ayr United at Palmerston - when Peter Dickson "never shy with confidence" had a great game.

In 1974, 'Craw' picked up an international honour with Scotland, turning out alongside Queens team-mate Jimmy Miller and future colleague Jimmy Coughlin [then of Albion Rovers] in a Scotland Select XI against Italy in Pescari. Around that time - in the 1974/75 season - he also collected a Second Division Runners-Up medal when Queens were beaten to the championship spot by one point by Falkirk.

At the start of the 1979/80 season he signed for Hearts, who had a full-time contract on the table. Having always had a strong desire to play at the highest level possible, he moved clubs. Hearts offered not only full-time football, but were a bigger club - and they paid Queens £20,000 for a quality defender.

Promotion, along with a First Division Championship medal followed in his first season at Tynecastle, however the Hearts squad was not strong enough to sustain an SPL place and they were relegated after just one season in the top flight.

'Craw' re-signed for Queens in March 1981, playing on for another season before signing with Irvine Meadow for whom he played another ten years. In his time with Queen of the South, Crawford Boyd made 321 appearances, scoring 5 goals. His last appearance was away to Kilmarnock in May 1982 in a [say it quietly] 6-0 defeat…

Still a very fit man, he retired from playing football from Troon Juniors at the age of 43 and now enjoys playing badminton and bowls.

You will be able to read more about Crawford's career in an upcoming programme feature, but can have a chance to bid for the signed ball at the Cairndale Hotel on 9th December in the company of Queen's heroes Mike Jackson, Alan Ball, George Dickson, Ian McChesney and Billy McLaren.

There are a few tickets left for 'Blue Christmas' - call Jamie on 07763 373 817 and buy a ticket for the meal and event at the Cairndale. Only £20 a head - what a steal!

Countdown to the Cup 21st November 2007
Although retaining First Division status is our prime objective this season, a good run in the Scottish Cup is always a welcome confidence booster. Last season we did well, beating Dundee and Cowdenbeath to earn a lucrative tie against Hibs and only went down by the odd goal, so a repeat performance this time around would do us just fine.

Says manager, Gordon Chisholm, "We'll put the league on the back-burner for a week and focus 100% on winning through to the fourth round of the Cup. This is the third time this seaon we've been drawn away from home in cup competitions so, after losing to East Fife and Clyde I'd like to win this one for the fans.

"It's their home game and we know it will be a hard one. They have a lot of good players who've done the rounds of the Highland clubs and have experience behind them. We had them watched when they were down at Berwick recently and have done our homework on their positives and negatives.

"We're leaving nothing to chance! It's a long journey so we're travelling up on Friday and staying the night in Aberdeen so all our lads can get a rest and a good night's sleep. So we can't be faulted for being unprofessional.

"It's a game I'd really like to win at the first attempt, so we'll be approaching it with a positive attitude".

Tomorrow night on 'Countdown to the Cup' our Chairman, Davie Rae assesses our chances.

YOUTH INITIATIVE REPORTS 20th November 2007
QOS 16s v Ayr United 16s

QOS 16s were at home to Ayr United 16s on Sunday in their final game before the winter break and despite the heavy overnight rain, the ground at the David Keswick Centre was still surprisingly playable. QOS started the better with their midfield taking control of the game, their passing and movement a delight to see. QOS opened the scoring when Reilly beat his marker played a reverse pass to McColm whose great strike from the edge of the box gave the visiting keeper no chance. McColm, with a perfectly weighted pass, then set up Reilly, who controlled the ball well before slotting past the keeper and into the net to double QOSıs lead. The first period was QOS 16s best team peformance this season so far. QOS continued to create chances in the second period but failed to capitalise on these or from any of their numerous corner kicks and Ayr scored the only goal of this period. Early in the third period QOS increased their advantage when a good pass from Patterson in defence found Johnstone in the box, who controlled the ball well before beating two defenders and calmly picking his spot in the net. The final goal of the game came when a cleverly flighted corner kick from Degnan found Black, whose fantastic header hit the back of the met. Overall a great performance from the QOS squad to complete a marvellous six-match run. The winter break will give the lads a chance to re-charge their batteries for the second half of the season. The coaches take this opportunity of wishing all the boys and their supporters the Compliments of the season when it comes.

QOS 15s v Stranraer 15s

QOS took on local rivals Stranraer at the Dumfries Academy playing fields on Sunday. QOS got off to an excellent start and a period of sustained pressure led to Abdul opening the scoring. Further impressive play resulted in a corner kick for QOS, with Murphy scoring directly from the corner kick to double QOSıs lead. Shortly after, a "mazy" run by striker Reilly led to the award of a penalty kick to QOS, which our own ŒMr ReliableŒ Thomson confidently struck home. In the second period, despite the worsening conditions, QOS played as well as they have done all season. Their one-touch football and clever interplay was a joy for all to see. Following good play from Ogston, Johnston increased the QOS lead and then Ogston himself got on the score-sheet, closing down the visiting keeper.

Early in the third period Stranraer scored direct from a corner kick, which the QOS defence failed to clear. Tremendous play in the centre of midfield from Parker and Reilly produced a number of other chances which, unfortunately, were not converted. Late in this period, Stranraer scored a second goal from a penalty kick, but QOS went immediately up the park and scored the final goal of the day, and a second of the day for Ogston, to cap a fine team performance.

Queensı Park 14s v QOS 14s

QOS 14s maintained their magnificent 100% away record by defeating a clever Queens Park side at the re-juvinated and impressive Lesser Hampden. QOS started well and put the home team under some considerable pressure forcing the home keeper into a series of last gasp saves. QP fought back, and for a ten minute spell, they reversed the flow with some neat mid-field play. However, after 28 minutes play, QOS got the breakthrough their efforts deserved. Hutton played a free kick into Johnstone who then rounded both last defender and goalkeeper to drill the ball into the unguarded net. In the second period QP were much stronger and for long spells had QOS under severe pressure but their defenders coped admirably with this onslaught with Anderson having an outstanding game. QOS regained the initiative in the third period and pressured the home side constantly, the woodwork saving QP on two occasions till, with three minutes left to play, a goal kick was intercepted and immediately played through to the ever willing Johnstone. who once again drew the home keeper and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner to secure the points for QOS.This was an excellent game, played by two sides both wanting to play football, with QOS eventually emerging the worthy winners. Well done to both sets of players.

Morton 13s v QOS 13s

QOS travelled to Greenock to face Morton, looking to attain a first victory on astrograss, having lost both matches played on this surface so far this season. The home side took an early lead and beginning to control the game when Park broke from inside his own half to outstrip the home defence and round the keeper to slot home for an excellent individual goal to bring the sides level at the end of the first period. Morton started the second period strongly, scoring twice in the first few minutes to reinstate their early lead, but Queens stuck to their task, and Chan brought them back into the match, firing home from a Davidson corner, to reduce their deficit. The third period started with Park scoring his second of the day to bring the sides level, but as QOS pressed to take the lead, it was Morton who broke away to score. Back came QOS, and McColm equalized once again, squeezing the ball home from a tight angle. Both teams were now pressing for a winner, but it was Morton who got it, with a great shot from the edge of the box, which gave the outstanding Latimer in the QOS goal no chance and denying QOS a deserved share of the points. QOS started very slowly today, and confidence seems to have been affected by the heavy defeat at Queens Park, however, what they lacked in confidence they made up for in commitment and effort, and with only one more match to play before the first round of fixtures ends, they can look forward to this weekıs home fixture against Raith Rovers, and a return to a natural grass surface, with optimism.

Countdown to the Cup 20th November 2007
On Saturday Queens make the long 240 mile trek north to meet Peterhead in the third round of the Scottish Cup. It will be the first time we've been drawn against the 'Blue Toon' boys in the competition--in fact we've only played them once before and that was in the Challenge Cup in August 2002.

We won that game 2-0 with Colin Scott keeping a 'clean sheet' and Peter Weatherson and John O'Neill scoring the goals. The crowd that night was a meagre 564. John Connolly was manager then and went on to lead us to the cup-final which saw up lift the trophy, beating Brechin City 2-0 at Broadwood.

Believe it not, but Peterhead's history dates back 28 years longer than our own, the club being founded in 1891. Their record attendance was in a cup-tie against Celtic back in 1948 when 6310 crammed into their old ground, Recreation Park, to see them take on the 'hoops'. They now have a new home--Balmoor Stadium which will be buzzing come Saturday. Their biggest ever victory to date was a 17-0 win over fellow Highlanders, Fort William, in season 1998-99.

They are currently managed by former Caley Thistle and Aberdeen boss, Steve Paterson who told the 'Website', "It's an important game for both of us with Premier League clubs coming into the draw for the next round. Obviously we want to make the most of our home advantage and win the game as we don't want a midweek replay at Dumfries.

"I was there a few years ago in the Scottish Cup when I was manager at Pittodrie and we were fortunate to come away with a draw. I've also been at Palmerston on league business when I was in charge of Caley Thistle and it's never easy down there. So, that's why I want to win at Balmoor on Saturday.

"The Scottish Cup always generates its own excitement and I know all our fans are looking forward to this one. We've not had a home game for a month with away matches and the Scotland international interrupting our preparations and it's not something I'm too happy about.

"Our average gate this season has been around 800 but I'm looking for over 1000 come Saturday. Queens are a division above us and even though we're at home they must start favourites. But it's 'a hard one to call'. We've had Queens 'watched' a couple of times and we know it will be tough--but we're all up for it".

Tomorrow night Gordon Chisholm will give his thoughts on the match.

Queens Match Ball 18th November 2007
On Friday the 1976 Scottish Cup Quarter-final Matchball - kindly donated as an auction prize by Bill Goldie and the New Bazaar Doonhamers - was back at Palmerston to meet up with Queens' longest serving player Iain McChesney.
Signed as a sixteen year old in July 1960, 'Ches' waited just a few short months to make his first team debut, scoring twice in a 4 - 1 win over Greenock Morton on 26th April 1961.

In a distinguished career he went on to make 615 appearances for the club, scoring 79 goals in the process. Of all those games, a League Cup tie played against Rangers in 1975 stands out the most.

"We beat Rangers in the Quarter-final of the League Cup at Palmerston. We had lost the first leg 1 - 0 at Ibrox and, when they came to Dumfries, we beat them 2 - 1 to level the tie in normal time. Rangers scored again in extra time and went on to win the treble, beating us again at Palmerston - perhaps more convincingly this time - in the Scottish Cup Quarter-final."

Although the game against Rangers sticks out, his fondest memory was playing in the side that hammered Dundee 6 - 0 in the League Cup.

Ian with the signed ball
"We had an incentive for that game, Tommy Gemmell had slated us in the press and was quoted as saying that we were like 'Dad's Army', far too old to be taken seriously."

This game was played at Palmerston on October 26th 1977. Having played out a goalless draw at Dens Park earlier in the month, the return fixture was said to have 'exceeded the expectations of all Queens supporters, certainly all Dundee supporters and, in fact, the football public'.

It was said that 'with confidence, inspiration and latterly arrogance, Queens completely destroyed the Dens Park side. In mid-field for Dundee was Gordon Strachan, later to star with Aberdeen, Manchester United, Leeds and Scotland.

One stand out memory from the Dundee game for Ches was when at half-time George Dickson said to Strachan, "Gordon, Jump in my pocket the now, it'll save me coming looking for you!"

Ever versatile, 'Ches turned out at right back in this fixture - he played in every position except centre-half and goalkeeper for the club.

His favourite Queens player was Ian Reid. "Reidy was never 'up' or 'down' just very consistent. The were many great players in my time, people like Tommy O'Hara, Billy McLaren, Crawford Boyd, Allan Ball and Ernie Hannigan. Crawford was a hard man that had to win. Another hard man was John Murphy, who was also a real 'wind up' merchant!"

"I recall being in C&A in Aberdeen and being asked to leave the premises by a store detective. Later that day we found out that Murphy had told the detective that myself and my companion had just been released from borstal for shoplifting!"

Although there were few honours during his career, had any of the clubs keen to sign him achieved their aim, there could have been a cupboard full. Clubs said to be after his signature included Partick Thistle, Liverpool, Preston North End and Leeds United.

No doubt, failure to agree a fee would have prevented the Queens Board from selling their asset, however interest from other clubs never unsettled 'Ches and he remained a loyal servant for twenty one years.

There are 'no regrets' and he remains proud to have been 'Player of the Year' when Mike Jackson was managing the side.

An electrician to trade, Ches recently installed the new floodlights at Palmerston, he also still serves the club in the capacity of match analyst, checking out Queens next opponents for the management team. He was delighted to sign the ball to help raise funds for the new floodlighting system.

For a chance to bid for the ball, enjoy a night being entertained by the Queen's heroes Mike Jackson, Alan Ball, George Dickson, Ian McChesney and Billy McLaren, and get a Christmas dinner into the bargain, call Jamie on 07763 373 817 and buy a ticket for Blue Christmas at the Cairndale. Only £20 a head - what a steal!

Queens hit double figures 16th November 2007
Queens ran riot to beat Fleet Star 10-0 in the Second Round of the South of Scotland Challenge Cup at Palmerston tonight.

We led 5-0 at half time with goals from McQuilken, O'Connor, Dobbie, Bingham and Moles and, despite O'Neill missing a penalty just after the interval, we still managed to net five more in the second half. These came from Gilmour, Bingham, O'Neill. Dobbie and Robertson.

Big Sean had to leave the field injured scoring the second goal but the news was 'it's nothing too serious'.

Queen of the South Lubuto 16th November 2007
At the request of Lesley McCubbin of Dunscore, Queens recently donated some used strips to a local church group, prior to their visit to a congregation in Lubuto in Ndola, the second largest city in Zambia. It appears that the kit was well received and everyone at the club had a real 'lift' this week when a letter was received on behalf of the congregation from the Reverend Christine Sime, Minister for Dunscore, Glencairn and Moniave Parish Church.

Christine wrote:

"Some of our congregation recently spent two weeks with families in Lubuto, seeing for ourselves the needs and great hope of these people. We took with us the three sets of strip and when a group of young men came to the The Manse to open the cases, you cannot imagine the absolute joy on their faces. Within minutes Queen of the South colours festooned the room. The following Sunday, they came into the service wearing the shirts, each one grinning from ear to ear and showing off the number on the back. They were also determined to wear the shorts, but since it was a church service they wore them over their trousers! In that heat!

In the afternoon we watched football games, blues versus whites, two matches to allow more young men to wear the strips. Some in football boots, some in bare feet - their commitment to the game was 100%. No one flinched and no one seemed to get injured (or show it if they were).

And now Queen of the South, Lubuto, Zambia plays each week.

Strips are kept under lock and key - worn, washed, returned and counted back into the cases. Youth from all around now want to come and play football."

Queens are proud to be associated with our partners in Lubuto and wish them every success in their sporting endeavours. We also hope to maintain contact with our Zambian colleagues in order that we can track their development.

A legend remembers 15th November 2007
While visiting big Jim Patterson yesterday to get one of the Globe Inn Doonhamers excellent calendars autographed, we started chatting about the glory days at Palmerston.
Jim confessed that season 1953-54 was his most memorable one and vividly recalls beating Hearts, Hibs, Celtic and Rangers--all before the turn of the year. He added, "We were top of the league at Christmas but on New Year's Day we lost to St Mirren at Love Street and on the following day got hammered 6-2 at home by Partick Thistle. We never really recovered from that and finished up well down the table".

In a memorable 14 years at Palmerston he netted 251 goals in 462 games--a record which will never probably be equalled. He was too modest to pick out any goal of his own as his favourite but did say that Wattie Rothera's late winner against Hearts in 1955, which gave us a famous 4-3 victory, was one of the best he'd witnessed.

He recalls, "We were 3-1 down at half-time then a young player called Alastair Gibson got one back for us. Then, Freddy Glidden handled in the box and although the Hearts players did their best to put me off, I scored from the spot. In the last minute Wattie got the ball and ambled forward to crack the winner past the keeper and the crowd went wild".

Big Jim
Another game which springs to mind was in December, 1961, which saw us thump Cowdenbeath 7-1--and Jim got six of them! His only reply was "Yes, I think I remember that. I must have been lucky that afternoon".

Jim Patterson hailed from Luncarty, Perthshire and signed for Queens as a 19-year-old in 1949. He recollects, "Billy Houliston was the big hero then and played centre forward for Scotland. So, for a young player it was like 'a dream come true' to play alongside him as inside-right in the Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers at Hampden Park scarcely a year later. The crowd was well over 50,000 and we were leading 1-0 with about 10 minutes to go but a mix up in defence at a corner kick gifted Rangers an equaliser. You don't get a second chance against teams like Rangers and they beat us 3-0 in the mid-week replay". And, with a bit of prompting, he could still remember most of the team from that historic April afternoon. "Roy Henderson was in goal" he recalled, "Dougie Sharpe was right back and I was inside-right alongside Billy Houliston. Others in the side were Dougie McBain, Simon Waldie and Jackie Brownwith Charlie Johnston at outside-left".

He 'hung up his boots' in 1963 but still turned up to watch Queens play for many years after that. He always stood in the small terracing adjacent to the Main Stand on the Terregles Street end of the ground and I remember him well in his white coat enjoying the game. Jim thinks it's absolutely ridiculous what some modern day players are getting paid and, with a shake of his head, remarked, "They get millions of pounds in bonuses! In our day it £2 for a win and £1 for a draw on top of a modest basic wage".

When his playing days were over he turned more to his other sporting love--golf. He plays twice a week, weather permitting, at the Dumfries and County club in what he calls the 'Geriatric Group' and has a creditable handicap of 20. Not bad for a man of 77! He still resides in his adopted town of Dumfries with his wife and insists he has no intention of moving.

It was an honour to spend half an hour in the company of the greatest striker in our club's history--and he never changes! Despite his achievements Jim Patterson is as modest as ever.

Community Christmas cards 15th November 2007
Russell Brown MP paid a visit to Palmerston Park this week to thank Queen of the South Football Club for their support of his annual Christmas card competition.

Russell said "Every year I send out more than 1,000 Christmas cards, and every year I invite P7 children from all the primary schools in the Dumfries and Galloway Constituency to design my card. I get the winning entry professionally printed into the card that I use. This year the competition has been more popular than ever with a record number of local schools taking part.

"As always I rely on the support of local businesses and organisations, like Queens to kindly donate the competition prizes, and my thanks go to them for that."

Jim Thomson, Russell Brown and David Rae
Chairman David Rae donated a Queen of the South home strip for Russell to offer as a prize to the winner. The strip was signed by the members of the current team, including club captain Jim Thompson. Both David and Jim took great pleasure in looking at some of the designs that local children had entered into the competition.

QOS 15s v Dumbarton 13s

QOS started very strongly against a "stuffy" Dumbarton side and quickly created a number of excellent chances through fine play from Reilly and Abdul. With Dumbarton's first attack after 15 minutes, a deflected shot trundled past the stranded Rajovic for the only goal of the first period. QOS continued to bombard the Dumbarton goal without being able to convert any of their chances.

In the second period the introduction of Johnston and Ogston assisted by fine work from Dillon led to Johnston equalising for QOS. A few minutes later, Johnston scored his second of the game with a blistering drive from 15 yards to give QOS a deserved lead. Shortly after, an excellent passing move involving Dillon, Steele and Ogston led to Ogston being brought down by the Dumbarton goalkeeper and up stepped 'top scorer' Thomson to convert the resultant penalty. A fine second period was completed when Murray increased QOS's lead as the period was coming to an end. In the third period, further impressive play from QOS led to a number of chances being created, but no further chances being converted. A late breakaway from Dumbarton allowed them to reduce their deficit which did not reflect the overall domination by the QOS youngsters.

The coaching staff were delighted with the creative play of QOS and look forward to the local derby next Sunday at Dumfries Academy playing fields against Stranraer FC.

Queensı Park 13s v QOS 13s

QOS 13s travelled to Glasgow on Sunday to play against one of the strongest teams in their section, QueensıPark , the game being played on the astroturf surface at Lesser Hampden. Being much more familiar with the surface, QP settled more quickly and took an early lead but QOS were soon back on level terms when McColm, following a flowing passing move from the back, collected the ball and ran through to score. Just before the end of the period QP re-instated their lead. The second period saw QP score twice without reply although the QOS boys continued to play well. Early in the final period McInally reduced the deficit for QOS before QP with a final flourish scored three times without reply to complete the scoring for the day. Having played reasonably well in the first two and a half periods, the coaches were disappointed to see some heads go down in the latter stages and need the lads to learn to play to the final whistle.

Queens Match Ball 14th November 2007
Last night the ball winged its way to East Kilbride to be reacquainted with Ian Reid, a prolific goalscorer in Mike Jackson's squad of 1976.
After four seasons with Dundee United, Ian joined Queens - along with Billy McLaren - at the start of the 1973-74 season.

Described at the time as being 'fast, with quick reflexes and always dangerous in front of goal', he scored 28 goals in 35 games in his first season. Four of these goals came just a few weeks after signing, on 6th October 1973 in a 5 - 1 victory at home to Stenhousemuir.

'I loved my time at Palmerston. Queens were a very friendly club with great camaraderie and of course, the playing surface was excellent. The club were also well supported with a few thousand turning up for games, some of which were quite memorable.'

One of his most memorable games was against old rivals Dundee when he bagged two goals in a 6-0 rout of Dundee. In four seasons at Palmerston he scored 89 goals in 198 appearances - some strike rate - before moving on to Airdrie for a fee of £4,000.

Ian with the signed ball
'On reflection I regret moving on from Queens. However, at the time I had a run of scoring seven goals in six games and was left out of the side following a defeat. I felt that I had been unfairly treated and felt I should move on.'

He soon moved on to Forfar where, at the relatively young age of 28, he decided to hang up his boots.

'Billy Little tried to re-sign me on a trial basis at Palmerston. However, I felt that I had proved myself in my time with the club so declined the offer and signed for Archie Knox at Forfar.'

'I regret leaving Queens almost as much as I regret joining Forfar! I was working full-time as an engineer whilst travelling to and from Station Park and this became too much, so I retired from the game to focus on developing a career in engineering.'

Married with two sons, Ian was successful in developing his career and is now a partner in a Hamilton based light engineering firm. He still looks out for Queens results every week and sends his very best regards to all at Palmerston.

Queens v Rangers Scottish Cup Quarter Final Match Ball 12th November 2007
Today the 'Quarter-final ball' found its way to Hampden Park and into the very capable hands of Mike Jackson, the man at the helm of the Queens side that fought its way through to the 1976 tie with Rangers.
A gifted inside forward, Mike not only played for the club, but also went on to manage the side twice, providing great service and entertaining football for the Palmerston faithful.

Having grown up with Celtic and Manchester United legend Pat Crerand, it was almost inevitable that he should have been linked with both teams - and both came calling for his signature, however Mike chose Celtic, where he played for six years. A lifelong friendship with 'Lisbon Lion' and ex-Celtic captain Billy McNeil ensures that he is associated with Celtic to this day.

He signed for Queens in the summer of 1967 and went on to make 117 appearances, scoring 28 goals. Although a talented player, much more was to come from Mike when he returned to Palmerston as manager, taking over from Willie McLean in 1975.

Mike today with the ball
"I had a good squad that were a delight to manage. They were all decent guys that were easy to handle and gave me very few problems. The squad included some very talented footballers such as Ian Reid, Peter Dickson, Billy McLaren, Tommy O'Hara, Jocky Dempster and Jim Donald.

Tommy O'Hara was great on the left side, Jocky Dempster was a natural right winger and Iain McChesney would play anywhere for me. Also players like Peter Dickson did us a great turn, but for consistency my best signing was Nobby Clark who I got on free transfer."

In his first season in charge, Mike's side played in some classic encounters. They were narrowly beaten by Rangers in the League Cup and saw off local rivals Ayr after a replay in the Scottish Cup, making it through to the Quarter-final tie with Rangers.

The greatest victory of the first 'Jackson era' was achieved in 1977 - 78 when Queens thrashed Dundee 6 - 0.

Before signing for Aberdeen, Gordon Strachan made his last appearance for Dundee in this game - which he refers to in his autobiography, noting that the Aberdeen manager Billy McNeil had been advised by his good friend Mike Jackson that despite the scoreline, Strachan would still be a valuable signing for the 'Dons.

Of the Dundee game, Jackson recalls: "I asked big George Dickson to man mark Strachan and he did a great job for us. I had the team play in an all white kit that night. We looked like and played like Real Madrid!"

After three years at the helm, Mike got the opportunity to take part in newly promoted Morton's Premier League campaign and joined another good friend, Benny Rooney, as Assistant Manager.

Following a relatively successful time at Morton, he moved on to Partick Thistle before being approached once again to manage Queens.

"Nobby Clark had decided to leave Queens to manage Stranraer and I got a call from the chairman offering me the job. I jumped at the chance to go back. I'd had regrets about leaving the club before. I was - and still am - a 'Queens man' and enjoyed the place. The crowd were good to me and I loved the atmosphere at the club, however Morton gave me the opportunity to work in the Premier League and it was a chance that was too good to miss."

During his second stint at the club, Mike decided to leave before the end of the season. "I felt that I was being undermined and not being allowed to manage so I thought it was best to resign."

Now retired, these days he takes in four or five games a week, often with pal Billy McNeil, scouting across Scotland for Portsmouth.

Of the Quarter-final tie against Rangers, he recalls, "Having played against Rangers in the League Cup earlier in the season - and nearly beaten them over two-legs - the lads were really looking forward to the match. Any talk of disputes over bonuses is nonsense, the team were up for a game.

It was a horrible, windy day and we set out with 'Ches and Billy McLaren man marking a couple of the Rangers players. The game was 'tight' for quite a while and I thought that we might have a wee chance. I changed our system so we could have a wee go at them, I honestly thought we could win it and went for glory…then the roof fell in! My mistake, we played some entertaining football that season, but on the day were beaten by a Rangers team in tremendous form."

Match Reaction 10th November 2007
Queens slumped to a 3-1 defeat against a much hungrier Morton side and it must be said that the visitors deserved all three points. We got off to the perfect start with a Steve Tosh goal in the third minute nut after that we 'went to sleep' for the next forty two minutes. Morton equalised through Peter Weatherson but we were fortunate to be on level terms at the interval. We showed a bit more fight early in the second half but a hotly disputed penalty was decisively slotted home by Annan lad Ian Russell in the seventy-seventh minute and in the dying seconds Morton scored a third to make it 'game, set and match'.

Facing the press a frustrated Gordon Chisholm insisted, "The penalty decision changed the game and the referee must have been the only person in the ground who thought it was a penalty. The boy was going nowhere and although the ball may have hit Neil Scally's hand it wasn't intentional. But it was a major decision and it went against us! We couldn't have wished for a better start with an early goal but we stopped playing after that. After all the hype of last week I was very disappointed, not only for myself but for the Queens fans as well. We just seem to get supporters back through the turnstyles and then we go and do that. This season the only consistency we've had is our own inconsistency".

Peter Weatherson was a much happier individual and said, "I was really looking forward to today's game and I'm pleased we got the right result. I thought we played really well and I'm not just saying that because we won". On his goal Peter added, "It was a good ball in and I managed to screw my leg round Neil Scally to blast it home. I thought I was going to have to come off after my cut eye but the physio patched me up well. Once I got my 'Terry Butcher' bandage on I was fine. Some of the Queens fans were calling me Rab C Nesbitt but it was all good fun. The Queens fans are fine with me and I didn't get any really bad vibes. They beat us at Cappielow but we got revenge this afternoon".

The man of the match was our prodigal son Peter Weatherson despite playing most of the game with a bandaged head. Sponsors man of the match was Jim Thomson. Crowd - 2,110, travelling support - 502.

Team News 8th November 2007
Although our injury situation is gradually improving, Jim Lauchlan and Paul Burns are still out for Saturday's match against Morton. Also missing will be Neil McGowan who is off on a month's loan to Stranraer. But Gordon Chisholm admits, "It's better than it was! Stephen Dobbie, who came off on Saturday with a thigh strain, and Eric Paton both trained this morning and I'm hoping they'll make it. Our latest signing David Nixon is doubtful, so we'll have to wait and see on that one".

Added the manager, "It was a great three points last week, even though it was a bit unorthodox. However, we've got to keep up the good work, build on that win and try and get another three points in the bag. We're not at home again in the league until the 8th of December, so it's important we go out there and get a result".

Testimonial year for Andy 7th November 2007
2008 is fast approaching and heralds the start of the testimonial year for one of Queens' most popular players--Andy Aitken. Andy, who hails from Annan, is now in his second spell at Palmerston and is only three games short of 300 first team appearances.

He first signed in July 1996 and was eight years with us before moving on to near-neighbours, Gretna. He returned in January 2006 but, owing to a serious cruciate injury hasn't played quite as much as he would have liked to.

Several events are in the pipeline for the coming year including Speakers' Dinners, Race Nights, a golf competition and the most exciting of all--a testimonial match.

Craig Watson of Chefresh, one of the organising committee, told the 'Website' tonight, "We've a Speakers' Dinner arranged in the Easterbrook Hall for Saturday, 12th April with former Queens' favourite, Des McKeown and well-known sports writer, Bill Leckie as guest speakers. We also hope to have another, possiby on the night previous, 11th April or, alternatively, later in the year.

"Norman Blount has a golf competition at the Dumfries and Galloway club on the agenda, but the highlight of course, a testimonial match for Andy on a date still to be arranged against top quality opposition".

YOUTH INITIATIVE REPORTS 6th November 2007
QOS 16s v Stirling Albion 16s

QOS took a few minutes to settle into this game against Stirling Albion, played at the David Keswick Centre on Sunday but were soon passing the ball well and taking the game to their visitors, winning a number of corner-kicks and when Degnan floated one across, Black, with a powerful header, opened the scoring for QOS and the only goal of the first period. QOS continued to take the game to Stirling in the second period and only a brilliant save by the visiting keeper from a spot-kick, awarded when Orsi was brought down in the box, prevented QOS from increasing their lead. But the second goal was not long in coming when Solley with a well-directed header back into the box, found Dougan who controlled well before firing home. Just before the end of the second period Stirling reduced their deficit. Early in the final period QOS gained a second penalty when Reilly was brought down in the box and Reilly himself stepped forward to smash the resultant spot-kick home. Black added his second and QOSıs final goal of the day when he ran on to a fine pass from Degnan and shot home. In the final minutes Stirling scored their second goal of the game. Overall a very good performance from the QOS 16s, their passing and movement creating a number of good goal-scoring opportunities.

Ayr United 15s v QOS 15s

QOS 15 travelled to Maybole on Sunday, to play their Youth Initiative fixture against Ayr United 15s, the game being played on the astroturf at Carrick Academy. Ayr started the better but QOS soon came to terms with the surface and good work by Miller, Johnston and Murphy denied Ayr any opportunity to gain the advantage QOS battled in all areas and gave as good as they got in a very level first period. An impressive take by goalkeeper McCulloch and a flashing right foot volley into the back of the net from Abdul to open the scoring for QOS, were the highlights of the first period.

In the second period, the introduction of Middlemiss and Ogston created a period of sustained pressure from QOS without them scoring. Miller, Ogston and Abdul all went close in this period.

In the third period, a cross from Newlands was turned into the net by Johnston to double QOSıs lead. Ayr continued to press, but the back four of: Pomfret, Thomson, Holt and Newlands protected their goal well, with keeper Rajovic only needing to make one important save. This was an impressive display against a fine Ayr United squad.

Dumbarton 14s v QOS 14s

This was arguably QOS 14s best display of the season so far, as they comprehensively dismantled a stuffy Dumbarton side, with a balance of intricate passing and power play. QOS mastered the soft underfoot conditions very quickly and dictated the game throughout. They opened the scoring after four minutes when Johnstone latched onto a fine diagonal pass, drew the keeper and calmly slotted home. The same player doubled his and QOSıs score twenty minutes later with the goal of the game when he engineered space and instinctively fired in a thunderbolt from twenty yards. In the second period Johnatone became provider when, in the space of two minutes, he set up Dougan to score twice from close range, his second a fine header. The third period allowed Duff to get in on the act when, showing good awareness, he pounced upon a loose ball and drilled home at the far post. QOSıs final goal of the game was deservedly scored by Hanlon, after once again good work by Johnstone, he swivelled and shot on the turn from the edge of the box. A quality goal. This was a fine all round team performance from QOS 14`s and it emphasises the fact that you don't necessarily need to have the ball at your feet to play well.

QOS 13s v Dumbarton 13s

QOS kicked off against Dumbarton hoping to put the disappointment of last weeks game behind them. QOS opened the scoring through Park but the visitors were soon back on level terms. Further goals from Park, Chan and a first goal of the season for young Neil, rifling home from all of 30-yards, put QOS in control at the end of the first period. Reduced their deficit at the start of the second period but young trialist Carlton scored for QOS soon after with his first strike for the club, and that goal was followed by an overhead kick from the outstanding Carlisle, to also open his account for the club. A further goal from Park, his fourth of the day, completed the scoring for the second period. The third period continued in a similar vein, and goals from Chan and Monteith completed the scoring for the day. With illness and injury causing several enforced changes in the line-up, the boys adapted well and played some good football in spells, with Davidson on the left-wing a constant menace, and Syme in midfield having a hand in several of the goals. The goals were well-created and well-taken, and it was good to see them spread around the team. The team is playing with great confidence, and this shall be put to the test when they visit Queens Park next week.

John Paterson
Still buzzing 6th November 2007
Queens have another home game on Saturday and Gordon Chisholm is looking for 'more of the same' following that vital win over league leaders Hamilton. After this weekend it could well be a month before we're back at Palmerston again, barring a draw at Peterhead in the Scottish Cup, so the manager is looking to build on Saturday's victory and move 'onwards and upwards'.

Added Gordon, "I'm hoping for the same commitment we showed against Accies. That gave the whole place a lift and the players have been really buzzing at training this week. Nobody gave us a chance and it was understandable as they've been the form team this season. But, even though we gifted them a goal in the opening minute, we still beat them and I thought our second half performance was tremendous".

This Saturday will be another tough battle with Morton as our visitors but the manager stressed, "We won at Cappielow but there was nothing in it and it took a great goal from big Sean to give us the three points. If we could beat them again we'd move above them in the table, but we all know it will be hard going. They'll be all out for revenge and as I've said so many times before--there's no easy games in this league. They're no bad teams and that's a fact".

Still harping on about Saturday's win--and who can blame him, 'Chis' continued, "I was pleased for our players and particularly so for our fans who haven't had much to cheer of late. But all credit to them--they really lifted us in the second half and created an atmosphere which made all the difference.

"When David Bingham and Brian Gilmour came on they did a great job and, although it was reported as two 'own goals', I feel those two should take most of the credit. We're getting bodies back now and we hadn't any failures on Saturday. Stevie Tosh is now showing better form, Bob Harris 'worked his socks off' while Jamie MacDonald had a couple of top claas saves.

"I was delighted that Sean managed the full 90 minutes. He's such an important player for us and it's wonderful to see him fit and full of running again. Although I can't name every player I must say it was tremendous team performance all round. If I get the same commitment and work rate against Morton as we did in that second half, I'll be more than happy".

Six foot two, eyes of blue...Match Ball Update 6th November 2007
Cult hero and Queens legend George 'Chopper' Dickson is the latest to sign the 1976 Cup Quarter-final Match Ball - which yesterday found itself near Motherwell for the 'signing occasion'.
Probably more so than in any other era, the Queens squad of the 1970s had many characters and players of repute. One of these, whose reputation stays with him to this day, is 'Chopper' Dickson. Those of a certain age will recall the chant...

"Six foot two, eyes of blue

Chopper Dickson's after you!"

Over a ten year period at the club George made 208 appearances, scoring 21 goals. In spite of his fearsome reputation, he only ever got his 'marching orders' on two occasions. Although an aggressive player, he would prefer to be remembered for his footballing contribution - and make no mistake, he could play a bit.

Chopper signs the ball
His debut was in a 3-1 defeat away to Hamilton Academical in January 1971. Tragically, on the same day, 66 fans were killed in the 'Ibrox disaster', an event which cast a shadow over Scottish football. Later that same month he featured for Queens in a Scottish Cup tie against Celtic at Parkhead. This was an opportunity for the 20 year old Dickson to make his mark - which he did - however Celtic won the game 5-1.

"Playing against recent European Cup Winners at Parkhead was some experience. This was the type of opportunity that I had dreamed of and I was determined to make an impression."

An impression was made. The following day the Sunday Times reported "George Dickson gave personal physical attention to everyone within reach." The reputation was starting to build.

His most memorable game was a 5-4 cup replay victory over Ayr United played in February 1976.

"Before the game Willie Harkness would not let us out of the dressing room until his wife made it to the ground. When she arrived she made a special presentation to me in the dressing room of a knife or 'chopper' won at a tombola the previous day. Because of this we were almost late taking the field but it was the start of a memorable two games."

"Later on, as I stooped to pick up the ball for a throw in close by the Ayr United fans, they gave me pelters. I looked into the crowd and, with the exception of one man, they were after my blood. The one man was my father who looked at me, smiled and winked. In a sea of anger and abuse, my father was there to support me. He was a great inspiration who was involved in all of my football decisions."

In that era Queens took part in a number of memorable cup-ties, one example being a 6-0 victory over Dundee at Palmerston in October 1977. Manager Mike Jackson, who sent the team out in an 'all-white' kit stated that they both looked and played like Real Madrid. Following a 6-0 victory, who could argue with that?

Dickson had a great game, scoring twice and marking a young Gordon Strachan so effectively that the youngster only played for the first forty-five minutes.

There are many stories of George's time at Palmerston.

"We had many great players in my time that enjoyed playing together. For me the most gifted was Chris Balderstone, his ability was outstanding. Others I rated highly were Tommy O'Hara, Crawford Boyd, Jimmy Miller, Billy McLaren and Jim Donald. Of course one other, Allan Ball, stands out because of his achievements in the game. If there is such a thing as a legend, it is Bally."

"I realise I was not always popular, some could not see beyond the physical side of my game, but I look back on my time at Queens with pride. My fondest memories are of just being in front of a big crowd at Palmerston, not because of what I or anyone else did, but because the place is very special."

Six foot two, eyes of blue, Chopper signed the ball for you!

Look out for further updates over the coming weeks as the match ball meets up with more ex-Queens legends!

McGowan on loan 5th November 2007
Central defender Neil McGowan has been loaned out to his former club Stranraer until the 9th December 2007.
The return of the Prodigal 5th November 2007
The Prodigal Son, in the shape of Peter Weatherson, returns 'home' on Saturday and like his biblical counterpart we're sure he'll get a warm welcome from the Palmerston faithful.
John Connolly brought a young Peter to Queens, in an exodus of a great many others from the North-East, when he arrived as manager in the summer of 2000. Unlike some, the loveable Geordie made an immediate impact and went on to net 45 goals in 104 starts and picked up League Championship and Challenge Cup winners medals into the bargain

He moved on to Morton for a transfer fee of £30,000 in 2003 and is now equally popular with Cappilow supporters as he was down here.

In an interview for the 'Website' Peter says, "I'm honesty and truly really looking forward to coming back to Dumfries even though I'll be in a Morton strip. I've only been down once since I left and that was just for a Reserve game which didn't really mean much. But Saturday will be different!

Nellie in 2002 after winning the 'Player of the tournament', award in the Brewers cup at Annan
"I had a great rapport with the Queens' fans and spent three very enjoyable years down here. I'm not exactly expecting to be welcomed with 'open arms', but I'm hoping to see and meet up with some old friends again. In my time here the Queens' fans treated me with respect, and I in turn tried to have equal respect for them.

"If I should score on Saturday, and I hope I do, for that's what I get paid for, I won't be going 'over the top' with my celebrations. I'll leave all that to my team-mates!

"Since we won promotion I've found the First Division every bit as competitive as everyone says it is. Win two games and you're up near the top, but lose a couple and you're back down in the basement. There's a lot of good teams in this league, an awful lot of good players and the football is really skillful.

"Queens beat us 1-0 at Cappielow in early season which makes us even more determined to get a result on Saturday. We all felt a bit aggrieved in that game as we thought we deserved at least a share of the points. Big Sean scored the only goal but I've got to admit it was a good one. I'm looking forward to meeting Sean, Jim Thomson, Eric Paton, Andy Aitken and John O'Neill again and we'll no doubt have a good chat about old times after the game.

"I'm planning to book in and stay the night in Dumfries and, hopefully, catch up with some old mates. But they'll be no wild night out! I'm settled down now with my long term girlfriend and we've a wee 18 month old daughter called Poppy who we both adore.

"See yous all on Saturday--notice I'm talking Scottish now. Cheers". Peter

Queens v Rangers Match Ball 4th November 2007
Queens legend Allan Ball is the latest player to sign the match ball used in the 1976 Scottish Cup Quarter Final tie with Rangers. 'Bally', who made a club record 819 appearances, was delighted to help with the latest fund raising efforts of the New Bazaar Doonhamers.
The game against Rangers was set up following a classic 5-4 replay win over Ayr United in the previous round. Having come from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Somerset Park, a replay was staged at Palmerston. In that game Queens went behind three times to 'The Honest Men' but came back to level the score at four goals each after ninety minutes. A crowd in excess of 8,000 witnessed an exciting end to the game when, minutes from the end of extra time, Peter Dickson scored the winning goal.

Scorers on the night for Queens were Nobby Clark, Ian Reid, George 'Chopper' Dickson and Peter Dickson - who scored twice. Many recall being at that game and over ten thousand more fans turned out in the next round when Rangers came to town. Look out for further 'signing' updates of this piece of Queens memorabilia - including details of the auction itself - as the ball wings its way around the country!

Bally signs the ball
Match reaction 3rd November 2007
A bizarre match with two bizarre goals from Queens which sent league leaders Hamilton 'home to think again'. Queens' line up was an adventurous 4-3-3 but our defence was caught sleeping in the very first minute when 'wonder kid' James McCarthy latched onto a through ball and beat Jamie MacDonald to put his side ahead. Queens came out fighting in the second half and netted two goals in as many minutes in a 'purple patch' midway through the second half and amazingly were both adjudged own goals off the 'keeper. In a tense finish they held firm and the three points saw us into 7th spot in the table. Said an upbeat Gordon Chisholm after the final whistle, "We certainly didn't get off to the best of starts but it says a lot for the lads to come back and take three points against a Hamilton side who are flying high at the moment. It was a tremendous all-round effort after getting caught on the back foot in the opening minute. We had the 'rub of the green' for a change in the second half and although we struggled early on I have no complaints whatsoever with our performance after the goals. They were tremendous. We had belief in ourselves and I'd like to think that we've now turned the corner."

David Bingham refused to take credit for the first goal and was honest enough to admit, "I never made contact! It was a cross from Steve Tosh which hit the upright and went in off the 'keeper, however we worked hard today and that's us off the bottom of the table. Perhaps we were a bit lucky but when you work hard you take what you get. We've had a bad habit this season of letting things slip away late in the game but we held firm for a change."

Brian Gilmour, who was a revelation when he came on could well claim the second goal but the final touch came off the 'keeper.

Hamilton manager, Billy Reid was disappointed and said, "Apart from a two minute spell when Queens scored their goals we were in control of the match. But Queens are fighting for their lives and the fans seemed to lift them in the second half. Their 'keeper made a couple of good saves and we have only ourselves to blame as two bad mistakes gifted them the goals. In my mind it was a match we should never have lost."

Sponsors man of the match - Jamie MacDonald, attendance - 1,646, travelling support - 292.

Billy Reid airs his views 1st November 2007
Speaking to the 'Website' this morning Billy Reid gave his personal views on Saturday's encounter. Said the Hamilton manager, "Although we're going well at the moment and sit top of the table I'm well aware how quick it can all change. It's a cut-throat league where every point is precious and, without doubt, the tighest in Scottish football. Every match is winable yet every one is loseable and practically every First Division manager will vouch for that.

"I've been a Division One manager now for close on five years and every season it seems to get harder. OK we've made a fantastic start and won 9 out 11 games and I'm naturally delighted with that, but we can't afford to 'rest on our laurels'. I was confident we'd do quite well this season as we had a lot of good young players who have matured and are a year older now. However there's still a long way to go!

"It was disappointing to lose at Tannadice last night in the CIS Cup but winning the league and gaining promotion remains our number one priority. We may be top and Queen of the South bottom, but I'm expecting a hard game at Palmerston come Saturday. I'm not being patronising but I feel Queens are in a false position and I'm surprised to see them down there. Yet, when you study the table, they're only two points away from fifth place. It's as tight as that!

"I'm sure they were the only side we never beat in the league last season with all four matches ending in draws. Palmerston is never an easy place to come to and having been a player there myself for four years I'm talking from experience.

"I was in the squad that won promotion under Nobby Clark in 1986 and I'll never forget the celebrations at Arbroath after winning the game which took us up. We'd some good players then--Alan Davidson in goal; Jimmy Robertson on the wing who could turn a game at the drop of a hat; wee Tommy Bryce who was a real goal machine and my partner on the right flank, Graeme Robertson.

"I'm so tied up with management that I don't see many of them now. However, I sometimes bump into 'Barney' and Jimmy Robertson on my travels and, of course, I see Graeme when we visit Livingston. Every time I'm down at Palmerston I see my photo still hanging in the 'Hall of Fame' or as some might call it, the 'Rogue's Gallery'. It's in the corridor beneath the Main Stand but I was a lot younger and a lot slimmer Billy Reid in those days".

Team News 1st November 2007
Eric Paton, Jim Lauchlan and Paul Burns will all be missing from the Queens' line-up to face Hamilton on Saturday and there will be a late decision on the fitness of Bob Harris who had to come off at Livingston.

Manager, Gordon Chisholm, took in the Dundee United v Hamilton CIS cup-tie last night an commented, "United were on top in the first half but, with the breeze behind them, Hamilton came more into it after the interval. They had a couple of decent chances then pulled one back from the penalty spot but when United got their third, that was it. However, Accies were a good team and gave a spirited performance".

Queens v Rangers Match Ball Auction 31st October 2007
Queens Directors and Management are very grateful to all supporters groups who continually use their ingenuity raising funds for the Club. One initiative which is soon to 'go live' is to auction the ball used in the Scottish Cup Quarter Final tie played at Palmerston on 7th March 1976.

Having seen off St Johnstone and Ayr United in earlier rounds, Queens drew Glasgow Rangers in the Quarter Final tie and were 'narrowly defeated' by five goals to nil...
In Bill Jardine's excellent book 'The Queens 1919 - 1995' he described the game as follows:

"Come Saturday 7th March and Queens had Rangers at Palmerston in the Scottish Cup Quarter Final. The Doonhamers were caught in a five goal flood that washed them out of the Cup. The final 5 - 0 scoreline reflected the one sided nature of the match. Queens side was Ball, McChesney, Thorburn, Clark, Boyd and McLaren, Dempster, P. Dickson, Reid, O'Hara and G. Dickson. The crowd was 18,700."

Club Press Officer Bill Goldie recently came across the ball in his attic and has kindly donated it to Jim Harkness and the New Bazaar Doonhamers to auction. It is hoped that all Queens players who took part in the game, as well as manager Mike Jackson, will autograph the ball, thus making it that extra bit special.

Tommy today with the match ball
Just today the ball was all the way up in Cupar, Fife in the hands of Queens legend Tommy O'Hara who dutifully signed the ball for the New Bazaar team.

Look out for further updates, including details of the auction itself, over the next few weeks as the ball wings its way around the country!

YOUTH INITIATIVE REPORTS 31st October 2007
Clyde 16s v QOS 16s

QOS 16s were away to Clyde on Sunday, the game playing played on the astrograss surface at Broadwood in very windy conditions. QOS started well creating a number of chances but failing to capitalise on their early pressure. Reilly and Orsi in particular going close. The home side took a rather fortunate lead just before the first break when a high corner-kick was caught by the wind and blown into the QOS net at the back post. In the second half QOSıs hard work was rewarded when a cut-back to Degnan on the edge of the box was drilled hard and low into the net for the equaliser. QOS continued to play well and were unlucky not to add to their score when once more both Orsi and Reilly went very close, both attempts hitting the side-netting. The third period was QOSıs best spell of the game, McCann and Solley both getting a grip of the midfield with good passing and movement. In the closing minutes trialist Grimlay headed on a long clearance from keeper Boyd into the path of Reid who controlled the ball well, before sidefooting past the home keeper and into the net to complete a tough away fixture for the naturally delighted QOS squad.

QOS 15s v Arbroath 15s

QOS took on a strong, physical Arbroath side at the Dumfries Academy playing fields on Sunday. There were competitive challenges from both sides in the early exchanges, with neither side able to play any kind of fluent game. The consequence of one of these exchanges produced the first goal for QOS scored by Abdul after a brave header from centre half, Thomson. QOS settled to a better passing game and excellent work from Dillon and Murphy led to Abdul scoring his and QOSıs second goal with a pacy run down the left and finishing from a very tight angle. There was also superb hold up play from Johnston who returned after a long period of injury.

In the second period QOS increased their advantage when Murray scored with a deft touch from an excellent cross from trialist McClymont.

In the third period, QOS went close once more and Ogston and Johnston produced some fine interplay which led to Ogston hitting the post with a cracking drive. QOS failed to add to their lead and in the final minutes, Arbroath scored a late consolation goal, an unstoppable shot giving keeper Rajovic no chance. This was a game where both sides gave no quarter, but QOS never looked like losing and remained in control throughout.

Ayr United 14s v QOS 14s

QOS 14s faced a strong wind in the first period on Sunday but took an early lead when Handling took the ball out wide before drilling a low hard shot across the dace of the goal for Dunn to knock home. QOS doubled their lead five minutes later courtesy of a penalty kick. Muirhead's effort came back off the post but Hutton was quickest to react and he fired the ball back into the goalmouth where it was deflected by a home defender into the net. Just before the end of the first period the home side struck twice to level the game. In the second period the home side took an early lead and while QOS played some good football and created good chances, they were unable to find the net. QOS went all-out for the equaliser from the start of the third period and when a corner-kick was played back to centre-half Anderson on the edge of the box, his low hard shot into the bottom corner of the net gave the home keeper no chance and secured a well-deserved daw for a jubilant QOS squad. The QOS coaches were delighted with the QOS performance and a good game played in the right spirit was enjoyed by a good crowd of spectators.

QOS 13s v Livingston 13s

Both teams enjoyed spells of possession in the first period, but it was QOS who struck first, Park outstripping the visiting defence to fire home. Fine goalkeeping by Latimer, and stout defending by the QOS defence of Edgar, Fleming, McMinn and McDonald, kept the Livingston strikers at bay until the closing minutes of the period, when the visitors scored an equalizer.

Livingston took an early lead in the second period with a looping header, but QOS equalized shortly after, following a good run and pass from Syme, Davidson squared to give McColm a clear sight of goal, and he made no mistake. But the visitors fought back and retook the lead. QOS refused to lie down, and again McColm, with his second goal of the day levelled the scores at the end of the second period. The third period continued in the same vein, with both teams giving their all. It was Livingston who regained the lead courtesy of a penalty. Once again the QOS youngsters came good, bringing the scores level for the third time, Park firing home his second of the game. With the game heading for a hard-fought and deserved draw, the referee awarded the visitors another controversial penalty, and with almost the last kick of the ball, the visitors took the spoils. This was arguably the best performance of the season so far from the young QOS team, and it was a disappointed squad at full-time. However the coaches were extremely proud of the way the boys played, with their commitment again never in question, and for long spells they had one of the best sides in the league on the back foot. The opposition coaches agreed that a draw would have been a fair result, in what was their hardest game of the season.

A Herculean Task 30th October 2007
Queens face a Herculean task on Saturday when they take on high-flying league leaders Hamilton Accies at Palmerston. With almost one third of the season gone they sit six points clear at the top of the table with ourselves bottom. However, it's the type of match Queens might just turn around and win!

Gordon Chisholm rates them highly and says, "They're the in-form side at present with only one defeat in 11 league games. They've had a great start and no one can deny them that--so all credit to them. Billy Reid has developed a system that works and they're the team to beat at the moment.

"It's going to be a real tough one as they have a good squad, a good blend and a lot of good young players like Offiong and the lad McCarthy. I said at the start of the season that they were 'dark horses' and the team to watch and I've been proved right. However, no way are we 'running scared' of them. I'm heading up to Tannadice to watch them play Dundee United in the CIS Cup tomorrow night and I'm fully expecting a real close tie.

"Hamilton only beat us 1-0 at New Douglas Park in early season and we 'gifted' them the goal. I'm fed up to my back teeth going on about the bad goals we've conceded this season--it's just not acceptable. To go up to Livingston and score two really good goals I'd expect to get a bit more than a draw out of it, but a point was all we managed. Basic schoolboy errors cost us both goals which frustrates me. It was yet another match we should have won--there's no doubt about about that.

"We have good quality in our squad but we're under-achieving out on the park. There's still a good attitude in the camp and the players are working hard but that bit of luck that every club needs isn't coming our way.

"No team has yet 'cut us open' this season but we're still needing that bit extra cover in the centre-back positions and that's a problem I'm looking at closely as we must endeavour to keep more 'clean sheets'.

"We had a useful 'bounce' match against Ayr United at Somerset Park yesterday and beat them 4-1 with two goals apiece from 'Dobbs' and John O'Neill. It gave us an opportunity to field players who haven't featured much over the full 90 minutes such as David Bingham, Jamie Mole, Brian Gilmour and Neil McGowan, and that was good. However, doing well in 'bounce' games isn't enough, we need to go out and do the business in the league where it really matters".

Disappointing cup draw 30th October 2007
Queens' bad luck in cup competitions this season continued yesterday when we were drawn away to Peterhead in the third round of the Scottish Cup. The Highland side currently lie fourth in the Second Division and the tie will take place at Balmoor Stadium on Saturday, 24th November.

Said Chairman, David Rae, "It's not the draw we wanted as it's a long, long journey up there, but we'll just have to get on with it".

The last time we met Peterhead was in August, 2002 in the opening round of the Challenge Cup. Newly signed Andy Goram was in goal that night and we beat them 2-0 up there and went on to lift the trophy beating Brechin City in the final. So, could meeting them again be a lucky omen?

Our near neighbours, Threave Rovers, have been drawn at home to Second Division promotion challengers Raith Rovers, while Dalbeattie Star face a tough test away to Junior cracks, Linlithgow Rose who beat Spartans 4-1 in the previous round.

Ayr United v Queens Friendly 30th October 2007
Last night Gordon Chisholm took his Queens squad for a friendly game against Ayr United at Somerset Park. The game, which provided a good work-out for both sides, ended in a 4 - 1 result for the Doonhamers with John O'Neil and Stephen Dobbie both scoring twice for Queens.

Amongst those appearing for Brian Reid's Ayr side were ex-Queens men Alex Williams, Murray Henderson, Steve Swift and Mark Whorlow.
