Reserves go down 30th April 2007
A strong Gretna side beat Queens 2-0 at Palmerston tonight in the Reserve League. The visitors took the lead five minutes before the interval and scored their second mid-way through the second half.

Following a collision with the keeper Andy Aitken suffered what could be a fractured a collar bone and was being checked out at hospital to determine the severity of the injury.

Player of the Season 30th April 2007
The top three in the man of the match voting from the season curtain closer at Palmerston on Saturday were; first place Sean O'Connor, second Neil Scally with Jamie MacDonald third.

The full scores have been added to the match report and the Player of the Season league table has now been finalised along with the scoring spreadsheet. Thanks for voting.

Despite it being a close run thing in the end, as Sean O'Connor crept up by securing five out of the last seven Man of the Match awards, it was long term leader Neil Scally who took the Queen of the South Official Website Player of the Season award. A remarkably consistent season in his first term at Queens and thoroughly deserved recognition for the midfielder who has picked up every Player of the Season award going. Well done Neil.

DIADORA AND THE SFL STRIKE A DEAL 30th April 2007
Diadora the famous Italian sportswear manufacturer are proud to announce that they have agreed a two year deal with The Scottish Football League to become their Official Ball Supplier starting from next season. The new deal will see Diadora supply a specifically designed football to all the SFL clubs from the 2007/2008 season.

The new SFL match ball will be based on Diadora's FIFA approved GAMMA RETE PRO ball which is at the very cutting edge of ball design and technology and will be used by Teams across the globe. The 8 panel ball design delivers an increased surface area and reduced stitching that cuts air friction giving the ball a faster truer flight.

The new ball and replica versions will be available from all good sports retailers for the start of the season.

Peter Terry, Managing Director Diadora UK commented, " We are delighted with this new deal and are very much looking forward to working with The Scottish Football League and member clubs. The new GAMMA ball is a fantastic design and one that we are sure the SFL clubs will enjoy playing with across the next two seasons."

Peter Donald, Secretary of The Scottish Football League, said: "We are extremely happy to enter into an agreement which will see Diadora become the Official Ball Supplier to The Scottish Football League during the next two seasons. I am sure that players will enjoy the new GAMMA ball and that the SFL and its member clubs will develop a close working relationship with Diadora which will prove to be mutually beneficial."

Neil tops the polls 28th April 2007
Despite the defeat by Airdrie and the departure of manager, Ian McCall, members of the Doonhamers' Travel Club gathered in great numbers at the Masonic Hall for their annual prizegiving last night.

President Ross Corbett and John Caskie acted as M.C.s and both Ross and Chairman David Rae gave rousing speeches to rally the fans in what has been a real 'roller coaster' season.

When it came to the awards Neil Scally was top man collecting three trophies including the 'Player of the Year'. Keeper, Jamie MacDonald lifted the 'Young Player of the Year' and skipper, Jim Thomson the 'Goal of the Season' for his spectacular overhead kick winner at Livingston.

An unexpected visitor was Alex Nesovic who was in town and popped in to say 'hello'.

Neil Scally was totally overwhelmed and said, "That's nine awards I've picked up over the past couple of weeks. For my first season at Queen of the South I'm absolutely amazed and I can't thank all those Queens' fans who voted for me enough".

Match reaction 28th April 2007
Queens season ended on a low this afternoon when a lackluster performance saw them go down 3-0 to an Airdrie United side who were fighting for their lives. It was our first league defeat at home since mid-January and to be fair we were never at the races. Gretna tied up their SPL place with an injury time goal at Dingwall despite a 4-3 victory for St Johnstone at Hamilton which wasn't enough for the Perth side. And for Ross County it meant second division football next term.

After his final game in charge Ian McCall said, "It was always going to be hard for us today but Airdrie United were worthy winners so good luck to them in the play-off's. Our only real scoring chance was a Stephen Dobbie shot in the opening minute which hit the post but the main issue is Queen of the South will still be playing first division football next season. It was a very emotional day for myself and all the lads but I think we should be judged for what we've achieved in the latter half of the season and not on today's match".

A Grand Finale 26th April 2007
It's Airdrie United at Palmerston on Saturday for the final match in another unforgettable season, and although we're 'safe', there could be plenty of joy and tears in a couple of other matches in our division. However, Ian McCall, who takes charge of Queens for the last time insists, "I'll be focussed on events at Palmerston, what happens at Dingwall and Hamilton will be furthest from my mind until after the game. It's a case of 'What will be will be'. I've no control over what goes on elsewhere--Queens are safe now and that's all that really matters.

"Of course it would be nice for my old mate, Owen Coyle, to win promotion and, for financial reasons, I'm sure Queen of the South would be pleased if Gretna were to remain in the First Division. But I'm still more interested in how we perform on Saturday, I want to leave with a victory! Airdrie are fighting for their lives and will make it very hard for us. For them it's either automatic relegation or a place in the play-offs, so they have a lot at stake. But we want to put on a good show for our fans--they deserve it!

"Last season in the final game I experimented a bit and paid the penalty by losing 3-0 to Dundee, so I won't be making too many changes this time. Any that I do make will be for a good reason. We have players with suspensions hanging over them, Stevie Tosh has been playing when not fully fit and I'm reluctant to risk him and a few others are looking a bit tired and jaded after 10 games in the past two months. Proven players like Andy Aitken and Paul Burns may be drafted in, but I don't think that will weaken the team too much.

"Last Saturday's defeat at Perth ended our proud run of 11 games unbeaten and that was an absolutely outstanding achievement. The effort put in since the end of October has been utterly magnificent and I can't thank my players enough.

"After the final whistle on Saturday we intend to do a lap of honour for our fans to thank them for the tremendous support they've given us this season. But, can I just ask you all to remain in your places in the stands and the enclosure and not invade the pitch to enable this to take place".

A personal message from the manager with board approval 26th April 2007
Rather than let the rumours persist about my departure from the Club, I felt I should confirm on the Official Web Site that Saturday's game v Airdrie will be my last as Manager of Queens.

Firstly, may I state that there has been absolutely no fall out with the Board of Directors. In fact the Board and in particular David Rae have been tremendously supportive, financially and otherwise, of me and I cannot thank them enough. The Chairman and myself have always had a fantastic relationship and that will always be there.

Following discussions between the Board and myself, I felt it was time to move on. My feelings were that the last 6 months have shown that we are only 3 to 5 players short of being a team that challenged at the top of the Division.

We have only lost seven of our last 30 games (one against Hibs), we reached the Quarter Final of the Scottish Cup for the first time in 30 years, and we went on our longest unbeaten run in over 20 years. My opinion was "who says Queen of the South" can't win the league?

The extra bit of quality brought in may have turned draws into wins, defeats into draws. However the Board could not do this and I fully understand and appreciate this. You, the fans, should never underestimate the amount of money David Rae has put into his beloved Queens.

For me there is real disappointment that we are not able to compete to win the league. With a lot of the Squad already signed and successful negotiations already started with Kilmarnock and Hearts for Messrs Adams, and Macdonald, it's definitely a case of what might have been.

I wish to thank our fans. It's not easy being a Dumfries boy and managing your hometown club, but by and large you have been magnificent. It takes quite a period of time to try and build a football team and without a doubt, I have made mistakes, football management is not a science! But I hope that the team over the last 6 months has made you proud. I am exceptionally proud that having stood on the terraces of Celtic Park, with my father, 30 years ago, I was then manager of Queens on that wonderful day when Hibs just pipped us. A packed Palmerston, TV cameras, wonderful atmosphere, I just wish my father could have been alive to see it.

Lastly, this is not a staged letter, but by my own hand.

Saturday will be a very emotional day for me and I can only thank you for the memories

Press Release 26th April 2007
Following a meeting between the Manager and the Board of Directors it was agreed that Saturday's game against Airdrie would be Ian McCall's last game in charge of the Club.

A Battle Royal 25th April 2007
Queens Reserves and Queen's Park fought out a 2-2 draw at Palmerston tonight. The visitors led 2-0 at the interval but Mark Whorlow fired home a cracker to reduce the leeway and Murray Henderson headed home an equaliser three minutes from time.

In the final of the Southern Counties Challenge Cup at Islecroft Stadium this evening, Dalbeattie Star beat Stranraer Athletic 4-1 with two ex-Queens' men, Richie Maxwell and Jack Steele both featuring on the scoresheet.

The manager's thoughts on the season 25th April 2007
Within the space of 12 short months Ian McCall has gone from Messiah to Moron then back to a saviour again. That's how quick opinions can shift in this world of football.

Towards the end of October we were sitting with no league wins, only two miserable points and bottom of the table. It was the club's worst ever start to a league campaign in their 87-year-old history and the punters were far from happy.

But somehow the manager turned it round for the second season running with what the fans are now calling the 'Great escape Mk 2', but Ian describes it in more 'down to earth' terms as 'Mission Accomplished'.

In an exclusive interview for the 'Website' today he spoke of the 'highs and lows' of a roller coaster season and the first question we posed was: Did you think at any time during the campaign, 'We're not going to make it'. "Not really" was his reply, "I'm a very positive person. You've got to consider the horrendous injury list we had in early season with key players such as Andy Aitken, Sean O'Connor, Graham Weir and Murray Henderson all out with serious injuries. Eric Paton, Paul Burns and Steven Swift were all struggling and at one stage we had no fewer than 11 out or nursing injuries. And few sides could have coped with that".

His lowest point he admits was after that dismal showing against Clyde at Palmerston back in September, which prompted him to post a personal letter of apology to the fans on the club's official website. "I felt it was only right and proper" he commented. "We lost 2-0 and it was a dreadful performance.

McCall in contemplative mood on Saturday
"But the first signs of improvement came in late October when we registered our first league win, beating Livingston 2-0 at home. Further wins followed over Ross County and Dundee and, at last, I could see some 'light at the end of the tunnel'. However, the real transformation took place during January when I brought six new players in.

"I was criticised over some of my signings in the close season and although I accept some of then were just not good enough, Neil Scally and Jim Lauchlan are still with us and doing well. 'Lauchie' has had a good second half to the season--he reads the game well and is a great organiser. And what more can I say about 'Skal', he's been outstanding! He's picked up one 'Player of the Year' award already, and I'm sure that won't be his last!

"One of my best deals was the Willie Gibson move to Kilmarnock. After it was agreed we managed to get Willie back for an extra month and got both Stevie Murray and Jamie Adams on loan for free until the end of the season.

"Jamie MacDonald also came in on loan from Hearts and he too has been outstanding. He's had 7 'shut-outs' in 15 games and only last week collected the 'Young Player of the Month' award. But, personally, I'm beginning to think these awards are a curse, for every time I win one we lose the next game or something doesn't go right for me.

"Others who came in were Stephen Dobbie who linked well with big Sean and hit 9 goals in his first 9 games, Jamie McQuilken who's now settled down in the left-back role and we've still to see the best of Stevie Tosh who's been plagued by injury since joining".

Any particular matches stand out we then asked. "Quite a few" he recalled. "Dundee at home in the Scottish Cup when we won through in a 'penalty shoot-out', our 3-0 win down at Gretna which was super for all our fans and beating St Johnstone 1-0 at Palmerston which came only three days later. But my best memory of all has to be the cup-tie with Hibs back in February. Although we lost 2-1 it was sensational to see Palmerston packed to capacity again. It was a great advert for Scottish football and we fully deserved a draw. It had been 30 years since we last competed in the quarter finals of the Scottish Cup and I'm proud to say I was at Parkhead for that one as well.

"This is undoubtedly the toughest First Division I've managed in and I was chatting with Jimmy Thomson the other day and he fully agreed and insisted it was the hardest he'd played in over the past five years. As I've said before, our achievement this time around surpassed last year's 'Great Escape' as there were two other part time sides involved, Brechin City and Stranraer. This season there was only ourselves.

"However, it's all about planning ahead, I honestly feel we have the potential to compete in the top half of the First Division, but we're still about four or five quality players short of making that challenge. Davie Rae and the Board of Directors have been great and I'd like nothing better than to have a budget available to take this club to the next level.

"I'm extremely fortunate to have back-room staff around me who are my own men. Stevie Morrison of course came on board last season and so too did our physio, John Kerr. At the turn of the year Gordon Chisholm joined us as Assistant Manager and I don't have to spell out to you what a difference 'Chis' has made.

"And finally, our fans, who I can't praise enough. In particular all those 'diehards' who travel to the likes of Dingwall in the middle of winter to cheer us on. The away support especially is so vociferous and can be heard all round the ground. My grateful thanks to you all".

Match reaction 21st April 2007
Well we made it! It wasn't so much watching today's game that brought all the tension it was waiting afterwards for the other final scores coming through. Early in the season Ian McCall said it would be an even greater feat to stay up this season with us being the only part-time side in the division and he was still of the same opinion at the final whistle - great escape part two.

Added the manager, "Forget today's result! What we've achieved since the end of October is truly magnificent and I can't thank my players and our fans enough for making it happen. It seemed an eternity until that final score came through from the Ross County match. I was standing watching TV with Owen Coyle at the time and he was the same waiting for the full-time result from Gretna. I said a couple of weeks ago that it's always a curse when I win a Manager of the Month award and it proved the same for young Jamie MacDonald. It always seems to happen - nothing goes for us the following week. We had two good efforts cleared off the line early on and had one of them gone in it might have all have been so different. I must admit they got on top after the interval scored their second goal and the match was over. They deserved the victory but how Jason Scotland wasn't sent off beats me. We've another huge game coming up this Saturday although we're now safe we owe it to our fans to put on a show. They were again magnificent this afternoon and created a real carnival atmosphere".

A winning double for Queens 21st April 2007
It was a double celebration for Queens this week as our manager and goalkeeper both picked up awards. Ian McCall won 'Manager of the Month' for March and our keeper, Jamie MacDonald, collected the 'Young Player of the Month' trophy. Although it's a 'first' for young Jamie it will be the third one for Ian since he arrived at Palmerston, having won it in February and April last season. But the manager was quick to point out, "It's not all about me. I'm dedicating it to the club, the players and our fans who have been brilliant. And, in particular I'd like to thank Gordon Chisholm and Stevie Morrison who have been a 'pillar of strength' those past few months.

"Although I'm pleased myself, I'm even more delighted for young Jamie MacDonald. I've won quite a few of these awards over the years, but for Jamie it's his first and he thoroughly deserves it. He's had 7 'shut-outs' in the last 10 league games, and that's quite an achievement.

"In the past 'Manager of the Month' awards haven't been particularly lucky for me, so I'm giving this one to the Palmerston Museum to put on show."

Said Jamie, "Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I'd be getting an award like this. It came as a big surprise but it was a great honour! But football's not about individuals, it's a team game, and if it hadn't been for the players in front of me I would never had achieved it".

Dumfries and Galloway have only won the trophy once before, and that was 20 years ago in 1987. The match kicks off at 7.00 pm and admission will be £3.00 with £1.00 concessions.

So near but yet so far! 18th April 2007
As Ian McCall emerged from the Queens' dressing room after Saturday's 1-1 draw with Livingston his first words were, "We don't make life easy for ourselves", and how right he was. We now require two points in our final couple of matches to be safe--but that's only if both Ross County and Airdrie win their last two games.

It's off up the road to Perth this Saturday, the same route we took exactly a year ago, when a 1-1 draw at Brechin was enough to finish 8th and stave off any fear of relegation. We face a St Johnstone side who will be high in confidence following their 1-0 victory last night against Clyde. They are now only three points behind league leaders, Gretna, and still very much in with a chance of Premier League football next season.

We asked the manager, 'Do you think Saint's win at Broadwood will make this Saturday's match even more difficult'? "It was always going to be a hard one" he stated. "In fact our last six have all been hard, but we've managed to stay unbeaten for 12 on the trot now. We're heading up to McDiarmid Park with a very positive attitude and we're going there to try and get that elusive win which would see us safe, and that in itself would be a massive achievement. We can't just sit back and hope others will drop points.

"Owen Coyle has a lot at stake as well with promotion still within their grasp, but I'm fully focussed on what Queen of the South do. When we played them at Palmerston last month we beat them 1-0, and I'd gladly take that again. But they're a good side and gave Celtic a 'run for their money' in the Cup at the weekend and it's not going to be easy.

"Five of our last six games have been draws, but we should have won at least three of them. Had we done so we'd be sitting comfortable in 6th spot. However, we're far from safe yet! Normally, with 41 points, we'd have had our First Division place all tied up by now which proves what a difficult, tense and evenly contested league this is".

Hands on at Palmerston 17th April 2007
Healing hands to massage all physical strains and a sympathetic heart to listen to all the players' problems. These have always been the hallmark of a good physiotherapist, and our man at Palmerston, John Kerr, certainly has both those attributes! So, today, we feature John on the 'Website', one of the 'unsung heroes' at the club.
He's a 'father figure' to all our young players and even a confidante to the more senior pros. Many a concern has been poured out to 'Kerso' on the treatment table, but he 'takes it all in his stride' and stresses, "You've certainly got to be a good listener as well as knowing your job in this game. You need to be a confidence booster, have a sense of humour and be able to lift spirits. I've heard so many stories in my 20 years in football--I could write a book about them, "One of the funniest has to be Neil Scally on an overnight stay at Ross County. He came in with a 2 litre bottle of diet coke which wouldn't fit into his locker. Neil took a big drink out of it, put the top back on and tried it again. Naturally, it still wouldn't go in, but we were all 'splitting our sides' laughing.

John Kerr
"Happier ones were always pleasing and I still fondly recall when I was at Ayr United and we reached the final of the CIS Cup. During the build-up every single player was 'on a high' and we never stopped talking about it. Although we lost to Rangers on the big day it was a memorable occasion and one I'll never forget.

"On the down side the saddest part of the job is breaking the news to a player that he has a serious injury and could be sidelined for quite a while, and I've seen many a tear shed. I recall Mark Campbell at Falkirk who was seriously injured in a pre-season friendly down at Wigan. It was really bad! Both cruciates were damaged and so too was a lateral ligament and doctors told him 'he'd be lucky if he ever played football again'. He was only 21 at the time but he defied all the medics and is still playing today".

A Glaswegian by birth, John was brought up in the Gallowgate but now resides in Kilmarnock. He has all the top qualifications in physiotherapy and holds regular clinics at Clarkston in Glasgow and also nearer home in Ayr. As far as football's concerned he's now been with six clubs and added, "I started off at Hamilton Accies then Falkirk for three years, and that's where I first met Ian McCall. Then it was on to Hearts, Stoke City and prior to Palmerston I was 11 years at Ayr United. So I've done the rounds".

He's confident that Queens will stay up this season and states, "The odds are in our favour! We're five points ahead of Ross County and Airdrie which means both of them must win their last two matches. We only need a couple of points for safety even if they did win those two and confidence is still high in the camp but no complacency is being allowed to set in".

Queens denied themselves a golden opportunity to ensure their first division status and even move up into 6th place in the table this afternoon by conceding the lead and only managing a 1-1 draw with Livingston at a sunny Palmerston. Although they extended their unbeaten run to 12 games they still have a tough 2 fixtures ahead of them with a visit to Perth followed by a home match against a battling Airdrie United. Sponsors man of the match Sean O'Connor gave us the lead at an ideal time - just a minute before the interval but a lapse in the defence gifted Livingston a deserved equaliser ten minutes into the second half. However over the ninety minutes a draw was perhaps a fair result.

Said Ian McCall afterwards, "Of course I'm disappointed to lose it as we're not safe yet, we travel to McDiarmid Park next week and points are hard to come by up there particularly if St Johnstone are still in with a chance of the title. Three points would have seen us safe with Ross County and Airdrie United drawing at Dingwall but we never make things easy for ourselves. But I can't grudge Livingston a share of the spoils for after they scored they got on top and could easily have won the game. Five draws in our last six games now and twelve games unbeaten but we're still two points away from total safety. We're just not finishing teams off when we're on top. Their equaliser was down to bad defending on our own part but it was a hard pitch to play on this afternoon."

Skipper Jim Thomson agreed with his manager and added, "It was so disappointing to lose a goal the way we did when we were on top. Had we held onto that single goal lead we would have been safe and celebrating tonight with all the pressure off."

Livingston manager John Robertson felt his team had given a terrific performance after last weeks bad result and said, "We deserved a win today, we missed four good chances in the opening 20 minutes but I'll take the point, it makes us safe, especially when Queens had taken the lead. It was so important for us not to lose and we held firm when Queens had a good ten minute spell at the start of the second half when they were in front." Asked if he could now relax John stressed, "As you know we're at home to Ross County next week and will be trying our hardest to win in front of our own fans."

As big as they come 12th April 2007
Saturday's home match against Livingston is 'as big as they come', as victory over the Almondvale side, coupled with a draw between Ross County and Airdrie United at Dingwall, would once again secure our place in the First Division.

Ian McCall is fully aware just how important a win is and says, "It's a big, big game for all of us as we know how close we now are to safety. But having said that, our last 11 league matches have all been 'big ones' and we haven't lost any of them yet.

"However, four of our last five have ended in draws so, what I'm looking for now, is to turn those one pointers into three pointers. This is the hardest First Division I've ever managed in, but I have every faith in my players to succeed.

"Livingston will be fired up and it won't be easy, even though we've won two out of three against them this season. If we win we jump above them into sixth spot, but I'm sure John Robertson will be well aware of that. There's a big incentive there for both clubs as neither of us can say we're 100% safe just yet. Back in October we would have 'given our eye teeth' to be in the position we are today, but there's still work to be done.

"If it hadn't been for fantastic reflex saves by opposition keepers in our last two matches we would have had four points more and, as a matter of interest, both stops were from John O'Neill who'd come on as a sub.

"I notice our run of 11 games unbeaten is our best for 21 years. I remember well when it happened as I was playing in the same division with Queen's Park at the time. Queen of the South went on to win promotion to Division One but we managed to beat them twice at Palmerston that particular season and in one of those games I actually scored two goals.

"We hope to have young Jamie Adams back for Saturday. I was talking to the Kilmarnock physio on Tuesday and he reckons he'll be O.K. His energy has certainly been missed in those last three games. I'm not so sure about Stevie Tosh though! His knee's still bothering him and we've not seen the best of him yet owing to injury problems.

"So I'm hoping that you, the fans, will help cheer us on to a glorious victory come Saturday. Your team needs you! I'm looking for a big support for what could be our biggest win of the season".

Happy 90th Andy 11th April 2007
A belated 'Many Happy Returns' to one of our oldest fans, Andy Frazer from Dalbeattie, who celebrated his 90th birthday on Monday. Andy still travels faithfully to practically every home game with his old pal Jimmy Black and prior to kick-off on Saturday he'll be presented with a memento to mark the big occasion.

From a early age football was in Andy's blood and he's lived a very active and adventurous life. He was born in 1917 when the guns of the First World War were still blazing on the Somme and relates, "My mother died when I was only 3 so I was brought up by my grandparents in a smallholding in Georgetown Village. It had only 17 houses and a village hall then, but just look at it today. We later moved to a larger farm at Bankend and it was my grandfather, Andrew McKenzie (a railwayman who lost his job during the General Strike of 1926) who took me to my first ever football match at Palmerston. I still remember it well" says Andy. "It was in January 1926, a Scottish Cup-tie at home to Celtic. We drew 0-0 but Celtic went on to win the replay 4-1".

Come the Second World War and Andy was enlisted. He adds, "The first day we were sent to Aldershot Barracks then moved on to Swindon and we were lucky to get a game of football on both club's parks. But then we were off for real to France and ended up stranded on the beach at Dunkirk. Only seven of our unit survived and I was one of the lucky ones.

"At the end of the War I was sent to Palestine and played for an Army side over there. One day we were informed that a touring team were coming to play us and when I lined up in my normal position at right half I couldn't believe my eyes, for up against me for the visitors at inside-left was none other than Willie Harkness. I can't remember who won but afterwards we had a right good natter about Dumfries and some of the folk we both knew.

"On my return home it was back to work and I eventually ended up working at the Crichton Royal which was one of the top mental hospitals in the country at that time. I worked in the same ward as Billy Houliston, one of Queens' best know players. After work he would take me over to Palmerston to join in the training".

His favourite Queens' player of all time was Roy Henderson who he described as "A great keeper and a real character". Others to roll off his tongue were John Renwick who scored the match-winning goal when we knocked Rangers out of the Cup in 1937; Laurie Cummings; those famous full-backs of the 1930's, Savage and Culbert; Jackie Oakes and Allan Ball.

What do you think of the present Queens' side we asked Andy. "They're very good, especially since the new players came in during January. I'm sure they'll stay up this season. But I must say that modern day referees are killing the spirit of Scottish football and I feel sorry for players like Jim Thomson who is always getting penalised unfairly".

A joiner to trade Andy is a keen bowler and was responsible for laying the first bowling green at Kirkgunzeon. It was a pleasure to interview him and for a man of 90 his memory is outstanding. We look forward to meeting him on Saturday and trust he'll bring us the luck we need to win through.

A great run of form 9th April 2007
11 league games unbeaten! Who would ever have expected that at the end of October when we were sitting at the bottom of the table with only 2 points after 10 games.

It was away back at the start of season 1985-86 that we last bettered that, going 13 games unbeaten. Nevertheless, it should be taken into consideration that we were in a lower league, Division Two, at that time. We went on to win promotion that memorable season but were pipped for the Championship by Dunfermline.

Ian McCall would have been 23 then, so no doubt he'll remember it well. Nobby Clark was manager then, some our top players were Tommy Bryce, Jimmy Robertson, Kevin Hetherington, Billy Reid (now manager at Hamilton), George Cloy, Stewart Cochrane, Bobby Parker and keeper, 'Barney' Davidson. The run consisted of 8 wins and 5 draws.

So, three more good results would better that lads, and there's still time!

Another draw but we're gradually inching towards safety. With Ross County and Livingston both losing today and Airdrie United winning it's even tighter and there's now only seven points separating the bottom five sides. So what a finish it's going to be!

Said Ian McCall, "Probably both sides would be pleased with a point as it keeps us clear of the bottom two. Their 'keeper made an unbelievable save from John O'Neill in the second half but had that gone in I think we would have won. We'd another chance when Sean O'Connor was through one on one with the 'keeper but miscued. But all in all I feel a draw was about fair it takes our unbeaten league run to eleven games and I believe that's our best since 1985.

"We had the better of the first half and Jamie MacDonald was seldom bothered. He had yet another shut out this afternoon and that's seven in our last nine games which is amazing. The ball's now firmly in our own court with Livingston and Airdrie United to play at home. A win against Livingston at Palmerston next week would take us to the 43 point mark and virtual safety. But I'm not going to assume anything until it's 100% certain as there's still a lot of football to play."

Stevie Tosh pulled a muscle in his leg and was replaced by John O'Neill just before half time whilst Ian McCall is hopeful that Jamie Adams will be fit enough to be considered for selection next weekend.

Jamie wants to stay 6th April 2007
Jamie MacDonald has been one of many heroes in our great revival which has seen us go ten league games unbeaten. Speaking to the 'Website' yesterday Jamie took time out from training to reveal how he'd like to see his loan period at Palmerston extended. Said the likeable young keeper, who's had 7 'clean sheets' in 12 games since joining us in the January Window, "I love it here and I'd be delighted if Hearts and Queens could negotiate an agreement which would allow me to stay on.

"I'm getting regular football week in week out. It's a high standard, very competitive and I've learned a lot. It's exactly what every young footballer wants. Sure, I'd love to play in the Premier League with Hearts some day but with Craig Gordon 'between the sticks' at the moment I've little chance. So until that opportunity arises I'm quite content at Queen of the South learning my trade and picking up tips from the many experienced players here.

"I can't believe how well I've been treated. Everyone from the chairman, manager down to young 'Hissy' the apprentice keeper has made me welcome. When I left Tynecastle to come down to Queens, Robbie Neilson took me aside and said 'I'd enjoy it, for there's a great team spirit in the dressing room'. And he was dead right".

Total concentration from Jamie
Tomorrow Jamie will be in goal at Firhill which will bring back memories of his Queens' debut against Partick Thistle at Palmerston. He recalls, "I was having an easy game. We were 4-0 up with just six minutes to go and I'd had only a couple of basic saves to make. Then we lost three goals in four minutes and struggled to hold out for the final two minutes. I was glad to hear the final whistle".

Another match he remembers well is the recent cup-tie against Hibs and added, "Being a 'Jambo' it was a day to look forward to but I must shoulder some of the blame for the 2-1 defeat. I hesitated at a cross and they scored what proved to be the winner, and I took a bit of 'stick' when I got back to Tynecastle about that one".

Two of his biggest fans are his dad, Gary and his mum, Jacquline who follow him all round the country and have done since his young days with Whitburn Rose and Blackburn B.C.

Said his dad, "Jamie loves it at Palmerston and he's told me himself that he'd like to stay longer than the end of the season. So, if that's what he wants, it's OK with his mum and I. It's what Jamie wants that matters and if it helps him develop, so be it. Personally, I'd be very happy if he was allowed to stay with Queen of the South--they're a real family club and he gets on well with all the players. Since day one he's enjoyed it at Dumfries and it was fortunate that he had Graham Weir there to travel down with until he got to know the other lads.

"As for the fans--they're tremendous. No matter where we sit, home or away, they come up and talk. They're so friendly and make it a great atmosphere, and I'm proud to say I'm one of them now. The away support is absolutely incredible! For a relatively small club I can't believe the numbers that travel and the noise they make.

"Jamie told us that the spell when they won at Gretna then beat St Johnstone was the 'best four days of his life', and I've got to agree with him. I can only describe their progress since the end of January as 'a real roller-coaster ride'. Nerve wracking, but long may it continue! I feel if Queens could get another couple of quality players signed during the close season they'd be a force to reckon with and real contenders for the Premier League".

Maryhill, here we come! 5th April 2007
Queens head for Firhill on Saturday to face a Partick Thistle side as hungry for the points as we are. We're neck-and-neck in the table, both on 39 points, but we lie one place ahead of the Maryhill men by virtue of a better goal average. So it goes without saying that Thistle and ourselves will be going all out for maximum points to stay well away from those dreaded bottom two places.

Thistle have very much been sucked into the basement battle and five sides are now fighting it out for survival. There's only seven points between Livingston in 6th place and Ross County in 9th which proves what a fight it's going to be.

There's been managerial changes at Firhill in the past couple of weeks. Dick Campbell is no longer there, but Terry Butcher has been brought in to assist caretaker manager, Jimmy Bone. Both are seasoned campaigners who have been many years in football.

The midweek fixtures saw three draws but Ross County did beat Thistle to improve their standing. This coming Saturday Ross County travel to Dens Park while Airdrie are away to Clyde. The following week Ross County and Airdrie play each other at Dingwall which could be interesting.

But Ian McCall insists, "I'm not bothered who plays who, I'm only concentrating on our last four games and fully focussed on Saturday's match. And, hopefully, a win for Queen of the South. Thistle are fighting for their lives, and it won't be easy, but we're all up for it. If we beat Partick we go three points ahead of them. It's up to us to get results--we can't sit back and rely on others losing. We're on a good run, unbeaten in our last ten league games, winning six and drawing four so that speaks for itself".

Our last three home games have all resulted in draws, but the manager was quick to point out, "And our last three away games we've won. I don't mind whether we win home or away, as long as the points come. Naturally, I'd like to finish as high as possible in the table, but if someone offered me 8th place tomorrow I'd take it. It would be 'Mission Accomplished' once again!"

An interesting fact to finish! Last season we ended up 8th with 33 points to our credit. This season we sit with 39 points with four games to play and 'still in the thick of it'. It's an amazing game this football.

Former players visit Palmerston 4th April 2007
Alex 'Sandy' Selkirk [left in photograph] and Willie McLean visited Palmerston for the Hamilton Accies game last night and had a 'Ball' of a time, meeting up with another Queens man - goalkeeper Allan Ball. They also met up with Chairman Davie Rae - who can well remember both turning out for the club. Both men enjoyed the game and felt that Queens could have taken all three points had all the chances been taken.

Alex remarked that he liked the look of big Jim Thomson, Andrew Barrowman and fellow goalkeeper Jamie McDonald. He also commented on how impressed he was with the overall performance and commitment of the team.

Although they didn't win tonight a draw saw Queens move above Partick Thistle on goal average and into 7th place in the table but with Ross County beating Partick they closed the gap between us to 4 points.

It took our unbeaten run in the league to 10 games but Ian McCall was still a bit disappointed at dropping 2 points and added, "It was out home game and one we could have done to have won. It's still tight at the bottom and no side can say they're safe yet. We started well but a defensive error 'gifted' them an early goal. But we came back and Sean did well to grab an equaliser. We put them under a lot of pressure in the second half but missed a couple of good chances and their 'keeper made a great save from John O'Neil's header late on. I wasn't too pleased at our set pieces but I can't fault the players for spirit. Overall a draw was probably a fair result. Hamilton are a good team and they're not 3rd in the table for nothing. That's four times we've met this season and all have ended in draws. The park wasn't at it's best tonight and it was difficult to play good football so I'll take the point and move on."

Sean O'Connor wasn't seriously injured and was just substituted as a precautionary measure.

Sponsors man of the match was Jamie McQuilken and the crowd 1,650.

Another three points the target! 2nd April 2007
It's Hamilton at Palmerston tomorrow night and Queens will be going all-out to defeat the only side in the division they've never beaten this season. But, our visitors will be thinking along the same lines as our three previous encounters have all resulted in draws. Although Accies are practically unbeatable on their own artificail surface, having lost only once there all season, they are a different side away from home and their record reads: won 5, drawn 3, lost 8.

But Ian McCall knows we have yet another tough hurdle to overcome and says, "Hamilton are third in the table and must be treated with respect. Billy Reid has a lot of good young players up there and, if he can keep the squad together and keep them fit I think Accies could be 'dark horses' for the league title next season.

"We've drawn thrice with them already this season but I feel we've had the edge in those matches. I think we should have beaten them at Palmerston but conceded a late goal, and also should have won the early season meeting up there. However, in fairness, they should have beaten us in the February encounter at New Douglas Park, but we 'stole' a point that day.

"I'm looking for a big crowd tomorrow night and I'd love to get another three points for the sake of our fans. I'm now led to believe that there were around 400 at Broadwood and Clyde officials had to open extra gates to allow all our supporters in to catch the kick-off. So I can only ask again to give us your all against Hamilton as we're nearly there. I'm never presumptious but if we can win against Accies and beat Partick Thistle at Firhill come Saturday, I feel we'd be more-or-less safe.

"The win at Broadwood was another step forward, but there's no way will we be 'taking our foot of the pedal'. They'll be no easing off in the camp! We've now put some light between us and the bottom two and that's the way I want it to stay".

Reflecting back to Saturday the manager added, "We've now have a strong back four and a keeper who can make crucial saves, and that's why we've had six 'shut-outs' in our last seven league matches. We also have guys up front who can score goals and that makes all the difference. I made a change and played Andrew Barrowman in a different role, just in front of Eric Paton. I wanted to nullify their best player and danger man, Dougie Imrie, and it worked. Andrew did really well in his new role and it was a big three points".

A superb victory and a massive three points for Queens at Broadwood this afternoon. Against a team we'd never managed to score against in three previous league fixtures this season a penalty from hitman Stephen Dobbie earned us a 1-0 victory and sent the travelling support of 239 home happy despite Clyde hitting the woodwork thrice. It was Dobbie himself who was pulled down for the penalty but he picked himself up, dusted himself down and calmly slotted the ball past 'keeper Dave Hutton. That's 11 goals in 14 starts for the striker who will be 'King of the South' and the toast of Dumfries tonight. It also adds up to six clean sheets in seven matches which will make the manager a happy man indeed. We now jump 7 points clear of Airdrie United who play Dundee tomorrow, 6 points ahead of Ross County and move to within a single point of Partick Thistle who lie 7th in the table and makes the 'Great Escape No. 2' even more feasible.

At the final whistle a delighted Ian McCall stated, "That was a big win for us! We defended well, and Jamie MacDonald pulled off a couple of good saves when required and I felt we thoroughly deserved the 3 points. Clyde have a lot of young, fit boys in their ranks and they'd been saying during the week how they should have won at Palmerston on Sunday. That fired our players up and it turned out a really good game - a big improvement on last week. I'm told that there were 239 Queens fans at Broadwood this afternoon. To me it sounded like 600 as the home support was seldom heard". But the manager was still cautious and warned, "It's another step forward but we're not safe yet."

Former stars return. 30th March 2007
Two ex-Queens men aim to be at the Hamilton Accies game as guests of the club.

Alex 'Sandy' Selkirk - who starred in goal for Queens in season 1956/57 when Roy Henderson was sidelined with a bad injury - will be at Palmerston on Tuesday. Having been seriously injured at the end of his first year at the club, sadly Sandy only played one season at senior level. He went on to be first choice keeper with Glenafton, playing for several more years in a very successful junior side, before retiring from the game.

Although born in Stonehouse, Sandy's family originate from Largo in Fife and he is said to be a descendant of Robinson Crusoe [aka Alexander Selkirk] who came from the same area.

Speaking from his Hampshire home, Sandy said: "I always look out for Queens results and keep a special eye on how the keeper is doing. I note that young Jamie McDonald is doing well and that performances overall have been improving. Hopefully the team will get three points on Tuesday and stay on course to remain in the First Division."

He attended Larkhall Academy with former Queens man Willie McLean and is looking forward to visiting Palmerston again. His last visit was in April 2005 when he attended the match versus Raith Rovers.

Accompanying Sandy at the game will be his old schoolpal Willie McLean. Willie had the distinction of both playing for and managing Queens joining from Alloa along with Neil Martin in 1961. Signed by George Farm, Willie won promotion to the First Division in his first season with the club when Queens finished runners-up to Clyde.

He said recently, “We were a good team. Ernie Hannigan was outstanding as was Neil Martin. John Murphy was a terrier, a great tackler in left midfield and we had a good centre-half in John Rugg. Allan Ball and Iain McChesney were also breaking into the team at that time, both were to become great servants. Winning promotion in this first season was a highlight of my career.”

After a distinguished playing career, he came back to manage Queens in 1973. He counts Ian Reid and Billy McLaren as two of his most significant signings for the club - and most Queens fans would agree with that!

Part of the McLean football dynasty - brothers Jim and Tommy certainly made their mark on the game - Willie also managed Motherwell, Raith Rovers, Ayr United and Pezoporikos of Cyprus where he teamed up with Mark Shanks - also well known to the Queens faithful.

Both Sandy and Willie are looking forward to meeting up again with Allan Ball.

Midfielder Jamie Adams will miss Saturday's game against Clyde at Broadwood with a groin strain. Eric Paton has a similar injury and is listed 50/50. Stevie Tosh however is included in the squad.
But it's bad news for 'keeper Colin Scott as Ian McCall explained, "His latest operation on his knee hasn't been a success and unfortunately 'scooter' has been told it's now time to hang up his boots. He's been a great servant for the club over the past six and a half years making 134 first team appearances but he'll be coming down to Palmerston for the final game of the season to receive a presentation from the Board of Directors."

Safe hands.

New Director for Queens 28th March 2007
Colin Rutherford has been appointed as a Director of Queen of the South F.C. by the Chairman and Board of Directors. He has been working tirelessly behind the scenes at Palmerston for over three years and has used his expertise to assist with some important projects.

Colin can rightly be termed a 'Doonhamer' as he was born in Dumfries in 1955--at Cresswell Maternity Hospital--like so many of us. For the last 22 years he has served with various financial institutions in both the public and private sectors which included vocations in the U.S.A., Germany and Saudi Arabia. His last post before retiring was as a Director and Head of Operations at Morgan and Stanley Bank where he worked for the past seven years. He is also a Director of the Scottish Enterprise in Lanarkshire and now resides in Dullatur with his wife, Anne.

He still vividly remembers his first visit to Palmerston and says, "It was a 'friendy' at home to Shrewsbury in August, 1968. My dad took me and we lost 2-0". Nevertheless, that result didn't deter young Colin's enthusiasm for Queen of the South, and he has supported them now for almost 40 years.

Two of his most memorable encounters were recent matches--both of them away from home. He recalls, "The first has to be the day we beat St Johnstone 3-1 at Perth at the start of season 2004-05. 'Scotty' had just taken over as manager a few months earlier and John Connolly had moved to McDiarmid Park as the boss there, so it was a big win for us.

"The other was at the end of last season when we drew 1-1 up at Brechin to ensure our First Division status. It was deemed by the fans as 'The Great Escape' and rightly so. I only hope we can do the same this season.

"I deem it a great honour to be asked to become a Director of Queen of the South and I will do my utmost to serve them to the best of my abilities".

Skipper on the 'School Run' again 28th March 2007
Jim Thomson was once more off on his travels on the 'Active Schools Programme' this week. Today he was at both Closeburn and Dunscore Primaries with Colvend and Duncow scheduled in the next few days. Tomorrow he is also to make presentations at St Joseph's College and Lockerbie Academy.

Over the past few weeks St Ninians, Lochside, Lincluden and Palnackie have all had the benefits of our skipper's professional knowledge and since the pilot scheme commenced in the late autumn, Jim has now visited over 60 schools in the region.

But he admits, "I'm thoroughly enjoying it! I get asked all sorts of questions and some of them are quite comical. A lot of the kids tell me that their dads play football and relate in great details of their parent's exploits on the pitch. But practically everywhere I go they all tell me they want to play for Queen of the South when they grow up which is good. So what a massive squad Queens will have to choose from in years to come".
