Juniors shine 31st July 2007
Once again our junior side is doing us proud in the annual Northern Ireland Milk Cup competition. To keep up with the results for the lads, who remain unbeaten after drawing 0-0 with FC Puebla from Mexico and 1-1 with Irish side Dundalk SBL, follow this link http://www.nimilkcup.org/.
Nice one Robbie! 31st July 2007
Good to see that Hearts are to grant Robbie Neilson a testimonial match at the end of the season. The rugged defender, now Hearts' longest serving player, has been over ten years at Tynecastle and had a memorable four months spell on loan at Palmerston during season 2002-03. During that time Robbie made 17 appearances for Queens, collected a Challenge Cup winner's medal into the bargain and never ever forgot his time with us in Dumfries.

Match reaction 28th July 2007
An entertaining match watched by 1,378 with 720 supporting the Cumbrians saw two penalties, (both missed), but no goals in the entire ninety minutes. Both sides played attractive football but Queens can now say they ended their pre-season preparation unbeaten. The visitors penalty in the first half was a soft one as Andy Aitken was adjudged to have handled in the box but 'keeper Grindlay got down well to save. John O'Neill was the sinner from the spot for Queens, blasting high over the bar, but he quipped,

"It's a long time since I missed but you can't score them all. If I am going to miss it's better to get it over with in a friendly." But it was only his third miss from the spot for Queens, the last one coming over six years ago.

Carlisle United manager Neil MacDonald changed his team completely after the interval introducing no fewer than ten substitutes. Seven first team regulars were on in the first half and three in the second. Said Neil,

"It was a good workout on a good park and that's what I was after. Everyone got a chance to play but I can't believe that both sides missed from the penalty spot."

Said Gordon Chisholm,

"It was out final game before the league season starts and I was very pleased at how the lads played. We kept a clean sheet. Both Paul Burns and Scott Robertson showed a lot of maturity whilst the experienced David Bingham and young Brian Gilmour oozed class. I spoke to our trialist centre half Liam Atkin after the game. Again I was impressed but he still needs to up his fitness level a bit which is only natural having been out of the game for six months. I'll have another chat with Liam tomorrow and wee what transpires. I'm still after another striker - a bit different style from big Sean and Dobbs but they are hard to come by."

Stephen Grindlay was delighted to have a clean sheet in his home debut and added, "Thats two penalties I've saved in the two games I've played and I'm happy with that. Jamie MacDonald and I are both after that 'keepers jersey and it's all good healthy competition. I left a job to become full time with Queens but I'm enjoying every minute of it."

A young man in waiting 27th July 2007
Our most recent signing, Brian Gilmour, is a young man who just can't wait for the season to start in earnest. Talking to the 'Website' today he said, "I only had four months playing in the First Division last season and I couldn't believe how competitive it was. There's no easy games and I don't think many players would disagree with me on that. If Queens could finish in the top six I feel it would be an achievement in itself.

"When the manager first approached me I was getting all set to fly out to Canada for the Under 20's World Cup and I didn't want to commit myself there and then. But when I got back he was still keen for me to sign, so I only hope I can repay the faith he has in me".

Added the 20-year-old who spent the first ten years of his playing career at Ibrox, "I've had two run-outs with Queens already and I'm hoping for a third against Carlisle tomorrow. With my normal pre-season build-up interrupted by the trip to Canada I'm not quite as fit as I'd like to be, but I'm working hard on it! I want to win a regular place in the team and play week in, week out--that's my aim.

"I'm most impressed with the set-up at Palmerston and I'm settling in well. I know Bob Harris well as we're the same age and were at both at Rangers and Clyde together. Also Jamie Adams who was in the Scotland Under-20 squad with me. The rest of the players have been great since I arrived and I'm looking forward to a new challenge".

Welcome to Queen of the South young man!

Another of the same 26th July 2007
Gordon Chisholm is looking for a repeat performance when Queens take on Carlisle United on Saturday. Looking back to Wednesday night the manager said, "I was well pleased at our performance and quite surprised just how competitive the game was for a 'friendly'. Gretna had a strong side out and we more than matched them and had it not been for Davie Mathieson, himself an ex-Queens' keeper, we could have scored a couple more.

"I know there is a healthy rivalry between the fans, and that's to be expected in football. But I can only say that Davie Irons has been more than helpful in any transactions we've had with Gretna as a club--and that's the way it should be.

"I think it's good to play teams 'on your own doorstep' in pre-season games, and that one of the reasons we invited Carlisle United back up to Palmerston for our final build-up. I'm fully expecting another tough match as they play in the third top division in England and only last Saturday held Newcastle United, with practically their full squad, to a 1-1 draw at Brunton Park. So, that's the quality of opposition we're up against".

Kick-off is at 3.00 pm and admission charges are the same as Gretna. Adults, £7.00; Senior Citizens, £3.00; Juveniles, £1.00.

Team News 26th July 2007
Jim Thomson and Jamie Adams are still missing for Saturday's match and joining them on the injury list are Neil McGowan and Bob Harris. Stevie Tosh, Neil Scally and Stephen Dobbie (who took a knock last night) are all listed as 50-50. Andy Aitken had two stiches in a head wound, but it's hopeful he'll play.

The manager felt that Liam Atkins, the trialist centre-half who turned out against Gretna, showed a lot of promise. Said Gordon, "He hadn't really played competive football since February but impressed me. I only intended playing him for the first half but, owing to the injuries, I had to keep him on for the full 90 minutes. I'll give him another run-out against Carlisle on Saturday and we've another big centre-half joining us for training on Friday. So, I'll assess him, and if he comes up to standard I might even give him a trial as well".

Match reaction 25th July 2007
Queens turned on a spectacular second half performance to beat premier league side Gretna 2-1 at Palmerston tonight. And it was only a consolation goal in injury time that made the scoreline look better for the visitors.

Sean O'Connor put Queens ahead in the 71st minute following a neat move and shortly afterwards an Eric Paton corner was headed home by David Bingham for the second.

A trialist centre half - Liam Atkin - formerly with Newcastle played the entire ninety minutes and had a good game. Said
Gordon Chisholm afterwards, "I'm very pleased with the performance. It was an excellent run out against premier league opposition and we did well. Had we taken all of our chances we could have won by a bigger margin. I thought our work rate was first class and the only downside was with injuries. Bob Harris pulled up in the pre-match warm up, Neil McGowan had to come off with a suspected pulled muscle in his thigh in the first minute then Andy Aitken had to have two stitches in a head wound. It's our injuries that bother me most, not our performances."

Attendance - 1,100.

Please also note that the Clyde game in the Challenge Cup has been scheduled for the 14th August with a kick off time of 7.45pm.

Away again! 24th July 2007
Queens landed another away tie when they were drawn to meet Clyde at Broadwood in the draw for the first round ot the Challenge Cup made at Hampden today. Said Chairman, David Rae, "Last year we were lucky with two first round ties followed by two second round ties at Palmerston, but the gods haven't been smiling on us this season. But you win some and you lose some! So we'll just have to roll up our sleeves and get on with it. Neither East Fife nor Clyde are unbeatable, even though they have home advantage and don't forget we actually won the Challenge Cup at Broadwood five years ago".

The Clyde match will take place on the either the 14th or 15th of August.

Bob's all set 24th July 2007
One young player really looking forward to tomorrow's match against Gretna is 19-year-old Robert Harris who joined us only last week. Bob, as he prefers to be known admits he was glad to get that opening game 'under his belt' and adds, "It was my first in pre-season and my first for my new club, but I must say I enjoyed it. I came on just before the interval and I think I got the best part of the game as we scored three goals.

"Afterwards we all had a great Saturday night out in Newcastle and it allowed me to get to know all my future team-mates. We had good laugh and they're a nice bunch of lads. Although I'd played against many of them I never really knew any of them, so the trip South couldn't have come at a better time. But I must say I was really pleased to learn that Brian Gilmour was coming in. I played with Brian at both Rangers and Clyde and know him very well.

"We've got two tough games coming up but I'm all set for them. We've a good squad here at Queen of the South and from the moment I walked into the ground I felt a 'togetherness', which is good. Although tomorrow night's match with Gretna is a 'friendly', it's still a local derby, so I can't see it being all that friendly".

A tough task ahead 23rd July 2007
Queens will be called upon to 'raise the tempo' when they take on two top teams in the space of four days. They did well to lift the Scottish Brewer's Cup at Annan and gave a polished second half performance at Newcastle at the week-end, but they now face a much stiffer test.

Whether we like it or not Gretna are now a Premier League side having won promotion on merit while Saturday's visitors, from south of the border, Carlisle United, would be more than capable of 'holding their own' in our SPL.

Said manager, Gordon Chisholm, "Of course we'll have to 'step it up a bit' for Gretna and Carlisle are two very good sides. But that's what pre-season's all about--progression! We still need a bit more 'fine tuning' and that bit extra sharpness, but that's only natural at this time. We were disappointing in the first half down at Newcastle, but picked up the pace and came on to a better game after the interval. However, we're still unbeaten and confidence in the camp is high".

Kick-off is at 7.30 pm. Admission--Adults, £7.00; Senior Citizens, £3.00; Juveniles, £1.00.

Team News 23rd July 2007
Jim Thomson is obviously out for both the Gretna and Carlisle matches, and so too is young Jamie Adams who's set to go into hospital this week--also for a hernia operation. Said the manager, "He felt it beginning to 'play up' towards the tail end of last season and with him being in Canada fot the Under-20's World Cup, there's been no time for it to settle. There's also a question mark over two of our stronger players, Neil Scally and Stevie Tosh. 'Skal' has just recovered from a toe injury but twisted his ankle at Newcastle on Saturday. Stevie suffered a nasty foot injury! The doc said it was only a flesh wound but needed a couple of paper stiches so he's to report to the hospital for an X-ray to make sure it's nothing more serious. So, it's just a case of 'wait and see' on that pair".

Queens win at Newcastle 21st July 2007
Despite losing a first minute goal, scored by Anthony Shandron, Queens fought back for a deserved 3-1 win at Newcastle this afternoon. Andy Aitken, of all people, netted the equaliser in the 49th minute after good work from new boy, Brian Gilmour, and only four minutes later David Bingham put us in front.

That 'goal-machine', Stephen Dobbie, made sure of a victory by slotting home from the penalty spot in the final minute. Over 100 Queens fans made the trip which pleased our hosts and the only sad note was an injury to Stevie Tosh.

After the match, manager, Gordon Chisholm said, "To lose a goal in the opening minute was unacceptable, but we hit back and played well in the second half. Two of our three new signings, Robert Harris and Brian Gilmour, got a game and I was pleased with their contribution. Stevie Tosh will need a couple of stiches for his foot injury, but it's nothing too serious".

A sad farewell 18th July 2007
All at Queen of the South were shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death of former Queens' striker, Gary Telfer. He was in his early 40's and very much a family man with three children. Gary had two separate spells at Palmerston, making 20 starts, 35 subs and netting six goals. A local lad, he always had a smile on his face and was most approachable for interviews. Apart from Queens he also played for Dalbeattie Star, Annan Athletic and the YMCA.

A fireman, Gary was called out for a car fire at Troqueer last night when he collapsed and he died later in hospital.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to all his family who have had a long assocation with the club. In particular his father, Bert, a lifelong Queens' fan and his young brother, Tony, who assists behind the scenes at Palmerston.

The other, who will hopefully put pen to paper, is Robert Harris, another defender/midfielder. The 19-year-old was two seasons at Clyde, having signed from Rangers and manager Gordon Chisholm describes him as a versatile, up-and-coming young player who he plans to sign on a two year contract.

All being well the two newcomers will be unveiled at the club's annual 'photoshoot' tomorrow .

Geordieland--here we come 18th July 2007
Queens make the trip to 'Geordieland' on Saturday for their first pre-season friendy to take on Newcastle Benfield. And their Assistant Manager, Paddy Atkinson, says he's well up for it!

The ex-Palmerston favourite enthused, "I'm really excited about it and looking forward to meeting up with the Queen of the South fans once again. I've got to admit that, since I left, I've never managed back to see them play, but I fully intend to get back up to Dumfries sometime this season.

"When the supporters arrive I can ensure them they'll all be made most welcome. I trust you'll take in the sights of Newcastle, have a good drink in the pubs and, irrespective of the score, stay behind and join us in the Social Club afterwards.

"We've a good pitch and we try and play nice football but I know we're up against a decent side. I'm told that Queens won the cup at Annan Tournament again at the weekend and beat Ayr United 7-1 in the semi-finals--so you must be in good form. I also hear that there's two coaches and quite a few cars coming through so please drive carefully. I'll try and post some directions to the ground on one of the websites which might help those coming by car. See you all on Saturday".

The manager's thoughts 17th July 2007
Commenting on the cup draw against East Fife, manager, Gordon Chisholm insisted, "I've no doubt in my mind that it will be a difficult game--it's seldom easy against clubs from the lower divisions, especially when they've home advantage. I would have preferred it at Palmerston but if we want to go further in the competition we've got to be prepared to go to places like Methil and win. It will be new territory for me as I can't recall being at New Methil ever before".

On Saturday's trip to Newcastle the manager said, "We'll be taking a squad of 20 players which will include Neil McGowan who'll be signing for us on Thursday night. It will be another good workout and act as a bonding session as well. I'm sure players and fans alike will enjoy it".

The CIS Cup is a good competition and it's so financially rewarding to progress to the next round".

Queens retain the Brewer's Cup 15th July 2007
It was Queens who lifted the Brewer's Trophy at Annan this afternoon--but boy, did they make it hard for themselves against a stuffy Stranraer side. After 90 minutes the match ended 1-1, and it took a penalty 'shoot-out' to decide the winners.

Queens eventually triumphed 5-4 in the 'shoot-out' with Sean O'Connor blasting home the final spot-kick after Stephen Grindlay had saved the opener from the Stranraer marksman Andy Gibson. The other Queens players to net from the spot were O'Neill, Tosh, Bingham and Paton.

The game kicked-off with another good crowd in attendance and Galabank basking in brilliant sunshine and there was little to choose between the two sides in the early stages. However, after some pressure by Stranraer, Gibson curled home an excellent shot from 25 yards which went in at the keeper's top left-hand post.

Queens were only a shadow of the side which knocked seven past Ayr United yesterday. Perhaps they took too much for granted for they 'huffed and puffed' but couldn't break down the 'Cleyholer's' stubborn rearguard.

The breakthrough did come in the 65th minute when big Sean latched on to a through ball to lob it over the keeper's head into the net. Queens were on top after this but never really looked like snatching that elusive winner.

Over the two days Queens had three trialists in their squad. Ex Airdrie captain, Neil McGowan who played yesterday; Carl Jones from Sunderland who was in centre defence today and an unused sub, Graham Eaglesham.

Andy Aitken stood in for skipper, Jim Thomson, to receive the trophy from the brewer's representative, but it was nice to see J.T. down there cheering his team-mates on following his hernia operation.

Stranraer's Andy Gibson was awarded the 'Man of the Match trophy with Stephen Dobbie being presented with yesterday's match ball in recognition of his 'double hat-trick'.

Said manager, Gordon Chisholm after the game, "I was satisfied at how the weekend went overall. Today wasn't our best but our aim was to come here and win the cup and we achieved that".

In the play-off for third place, Ayr United beat the host club, Annan Athletic, 5-1.

Six of the best 15th July 2007
Stephen Dobbie's six goals against Ayr United at Annan yesterday prompted the question, 'Has any other Queens' player ever scored more in an organised match'? To our knowledge no one has ever bettered that, but two have equalled the feat.

In December 1961, the legendary Jim Patterson, the club's highest-ever scorer, netted six in a 7-1 rout of Cowdenbeath at Palmerston. I was there and still remember it well!

The only other player to manage it was Jimmy Gilmour over 80 years ago. Again, in a home league game, he rattled in six of the best in October 1926 to help beat Arbroath 7-4. Our thanks to Andy Penn for 'digging' out the info.

Match reaction 14th July 2007
Queens ran riot at Galabank this afternoon for a 7-1 demolition job against Ayr United. And the match headline could well read, 'Six goal Dobbie shatters Ayr'.

The striker opened the scoring in the 38th minute and a few minutes later Jim Lauchlan, of all people, scored a second just before the half-time whistle. Following that it was 'The Stephen Dobbie Show'. His second came from the penalty spot and he grabbed his 'hat-trick with a delicate little chip.

Two more followed before Ryan Stevenson netted a consolation for Ayr in the 75th minute, but Dobbie popped up again to complete his double 'hat-trick' near the end.

Said a happy Gordon Chisholm afterwards, "That's eight goals against Dumbarton on Tuesday night and another seven this afternoon. Big Sean hit four in midweek and 'Dobbs' got six today. Our strike force is functioning well and I can't complain at that. We played with a lot of confidence out there and our attitude was 'spot-on'. Another display like that against Stranraer in the final tomorrow would do me fine".

The other match ended up 1-1 with Annan Athletic equalising in injury time, but Stranraer went on to win in a 'penalty shoot-out'.

There were close on 1000 at Galabank today but there could be even more tomorrow for the final which kicks-off at 3.15 pm.

All set for Annan 13th July 2007
Gordon Chisholm is expecting to take a pool of 18 players to Annan tomorrow to defend the Brewers Cup which we won last year. And the manager hopes that each and every one of them will participate in some way.

"Six subs are allowed" he said, "So everyone should get a chance to play a part over the two days. We face Ayr United in our opening game, so it will be a hard start. Neil Watt has now settled in at Somerset Park and he has brought in quite a few new faces including Barry John Corr, Stephen Swift and Murray Henderson who are all well known to us. Obviously we'll be all out to win tomorrow and make the final. However, win or lose, we'll still have another match on Sunday which is a good thing.

"We trained last night and again this morning and we're gradually stepping up the pace. Jamie Adams is now back from Canada and will be in the squad, but one player missing is Jim Thomson who is scheduled to go through his hernia operation today. With the three signings earlier in the week our squad is more or less in place, but I'm still on the lookout for two more players to strengthen certain key positions. Hope to see a good turnout of Queens' fans at Annan tomorrow".

Why I chose Queens 12th July 2007
In spite of several other clubs showing an interest in him David Bingham revealed tonight that he chose Queen of the South for a variety of reasons. Said 'Bingo', who has turned out for no fewer than seven senior Scottish clubs, "I wanted to get back into First Division football again! I also knew Stevie Tosh, Neil MacFarlane, Jamie McQuilken and Andy Aitken from my time at Gretna, so Palmerston will be like a 'home from home' for me. Kenny Crichton spoke very highly of Queens when I was at Raydale and told me 'It was a chance worth taking'.

"Over the year I've come up against many of the other players now at Palmerston and have always rated them most professional. I had my first outing for Queens against Dumbarton on Tuesday night and I must say I was most impressed at the way they play football. It suits me!"

Bingo for Caley
But the 36-year-old reckons the league will be harder than ever this coming season and added, "I think we're in for a real tough battle! Dunfermline, Dundee and St Johnstone will all be desperate to get back up into the SPL and newly promoted Morton are another side I rate highly. So we must stay focussed on the task ahead".

Our new keeper, Stephen Grindley, totally agreed with the striker and acknowledged. "Division One will be a big step up for me but I'm really looking forward to it. The Queens lads have all made me most welcome, in particular 'Dobbs' who was a team-mate of mine at Dumbarton--my home town team.

"I realise it will be hard to break into the First Team with Jamie MacDonald there. He had a string of 'shut-outs' towards the end of last season when Queens were going well and he's a good keeper. I met Jamie for the first time on Tuesday night and he's a nice lad, and I'm sure we'll get on well together despite competing for the number 1 jersey. Competition is good and will keep us 'both on our toes' so to speak".

Skipper, Jim Thomson, is being admitted to hospital tomorrow for his hernia operation. So, good luck 'big man' and all the best.

Shedding some light on the subject 12th July 2007
There has been much speculation this week regarding new floodlights at Palmerston, but it's only the lights themselves that are to be replaced, not the pylons. However, this includes lamps, reflectors and fittings, to increase the power from 224 lux to 500, to meet the requirement for our ground licence. But Chairman, David Rae added, "It's still a costly business and will work out at around £40,000. But it needs to be done! Work will commence during the last week of July and we hope to have it completed by the end of August".

Welcome back 11th July 2007
Jamie MacDonald, who signed a new one-year loan deal last night, spoke to the 'Website' this evening and admitted he's delighted to be back at Palmerston. Jamie insisted "It's what I always wanted and what my family wanted as well. For a while I didn't know how it would go and I was beginning to think it would never happen. A month ago I was on the brink of signing but it fell through--however it all turned out for the best in the end. I'm just glad it's all sorted out and I'm now signed up and to get a year's contract is a real bonus as a whole season is definitely preferred. It gives me the chance to get some pre-season games 'under my belt' before the season kicks off in earnest.
"I know I'll be in competion for the goalie's jersey with new signing, Stephen Grindley, but every club needs at least two keepers. He comes with a good reputation from Dumbarton and we met for the first time last night and got on well together. Healthy competition helps motivate players! It's a long season and no doubt they'll be an injury or two along the way so the club's done the right thing".

Asked how he feels the new season will go Jamie said, "It's going to be a very competitive league again but I'm really looking forward to it. I only hope we can be more consistent and get off to a better start than we did last year. Last season it took a late run of 12 games unbeaten to ensure survival and I don't fancy having that pressure again".

Happy to return

David Bingham signs 10th July 2007
Gretna's David Bingham tonight completed his move to Queens when he put pen to paper on a six month loan deal.

'Bingo' as he is know, commenced his senior career with St Johnstone then moved on to Forfar Athletic where he made over 100 appearances and scored 45 goals. He was then transferred to Dunfermline for a fee £100,000 and while there played in the UEFA Cup for the 'Pars'. It was on to Livingston next and he was over five years there before signing for Gretna, then in the Third Division. He helped the Raydale side to three League Championships in the space of as many years but was out on loan to Stirling Albion for a spell last season.

Keeper, Jamie MacDonald, also signed on a one year's loan tonight which will no doubt please all Queens' fans.

Eight goal Queens 10th July 2007
In a training match tonight Queens gave a polished performance to beat Dumbarton 8-2. Man-of-the-Match must go to Sean O'Connor who scored four, Stephen Dobbie grabbed a 'hat-trick' with new signing, David Bingham coming on as a sub and netting a wonder goal.

All 18 members of the squad got a game with our two keepers, Stephen Grindlay and Jamie MacDonald playing a half each. Captain courageous, Jim Thomson also played prior to his visit to the specialist tomorrow.

Gordon Chisholm summed it up as a very satisfactory performance and added, "I was happy with all the boys--it was an ideal build up for the Annan Tournament at the weekend."

Two keepers by Wednesday? 9th July 2007
Queens tonight completed the signing of Dumbarton's Stephen Grindlay on a one year deal. The keeper had been linked strongly with Morton. It is also expecteded that Jamie MacDonald will return to us on a 'one year's loan' from Hearts by Wednesday which will give us two top quality stoppers. Yet another target is Gretna's David Bingham who has opted to join Queens 'on loan' despite several other top clubs being interested in him. So, well done Gordon Chisholm--better late than never.

On the move--but still a Queens' player 9th July 2007
Although Stevie Tosh is set to re-locate to Kirkcaldy he will still be very much a Queen of the South player. Stressed manager, Gordon Chisholm, this afternoon, "Stevie came in to see me and said his house in Dumfries was on the market for sale and he intended moving back to his home town. We had a frank and honest discussion and he assured me it was nothing to do with his football career but, as any 34-year-old would do, he's looking at the future outside the game.

"He's still got two years of his contract to run and he wants to continue playing for Queens and stay 110% focussed on the game. I understand exactly why he's doing it! The travelling won't bother him too much as we train twice a week at Glasgow and when it comes to matches against Dunfermline, Dundee, St Johnstone, Stirling and even Livingston, he's not far from home. Players travel a lot further than Stevie will to play football, so I don't have a problem with that".

Added Stevie himself, "Just as the manager says it's purely for family and financial reasons and has nothing to do with football. Both my wife and myself enjoy staying in Dumfries and, even when I played at Gretna, the locals treated me well in spite of the rivalry.

"But Kirkcaldy's my home --it's where my family and friends are--and there's an old saying, 'There's no place like home'. My wife would like to start a wee beautician's business up there, however, we're in no rush to sell.

"There was much expected of me when I first arrived at Palmerston but, after only three games, I was injured and was never at my best after that. But the fans stuck by me, so I owe them one! I've been working very hard in pre-season training and I'm raring to go. I love playing for Queen of the South and the only way I'll leave Palmerston is when the manager tells me 'I'm no longer needed'. Travelling doesn't bother me one bit--in fact it could be even less."

New keeper to sign 9th July 2007
Queens will sign a new keeper tonight, 25-year-old Stephen Grindlay. He's been with Dumbarton for the past five years, stands 6 feet 2 inches, and was with Newcastle as a youngster. Added Gordon Chisholm, "Although Stephen will be joining us I make no secret of the fact that we want competition for the goalie's jersey and we hope to sign another keeper very soon".

Bad news for J.T. 7th July 2007
Bad news for both Queens and Jim Thomson. Following yesterday's training session the big man complained about pain in his groin area and, after an inspection by the club doctor, it was diagnosed as a hernia. Said a gutted Gordon Chisholm this morning, "That's the last thing we want at the start of a season. He'll need a small operation and could be out for around six weeks. But Jim's a fit lad, so we're hoping it's not going to be for too long. He'll miss all the pre-season matches and some of the early cup and league games. He would have missed the two opening league fixtures anyway through suspension, but that's the only consolation. However, with five players already suspended for our opener against St Johnstone it will be a tough start.

"Towards the end of last season Jim was complaining about some discomfort in that region but, being Jim, he said it wasn't too bad and he wanted to play and help us consolidate our First Division place. During the close season it had all settled down and we had heard no more about it. But, after an eight week break it's heartbreaking that it's back again. On hindsight it might have been better getting it seen to there and then. But that's football for you!

"It's comes as a major disappointment as he's team captain, has great leading qualities and is such an influential player. I thought he had a tremendous second half to the season, was one of our most consistent performers and contributed so much in us staying up".

Off to the sunshine 7th July 2007
Our two 'penalty kings', John O'Neill and Stephen Dobbie were single when they left for the close season break, but both returned as married men. John spent his honeymoon in the Indian Ocean paradise of the Maldives with 'Dobbs' heading 'Down Mexico Way'.

Other players who opted for sunny climes were Paul Burns who was in Florida and so too was Jamie McQuilken with the wife and kids. Our 'Player of the Season', Neil Scally, chose the Spanish resort of La Manga while skipper, Jim Thomson and Sean O'Connor were both in Cyprus--but not together we hasten to add.

Young Mark Whorlow visited Prague but pride of place must go to that happy wanderer, Stevie Tosh who did a mini-tour of Spain, visiting Magaluf, Murcia and Barcelona before jetting off to Gran Canaria.

Twenty at training 6th July 2007
Despite last night turning out really wet, Queens' had another torrid training session at Maxwelltown High. Said manager Gordon Chisholm this morning, "I've been quite impressed with the training facilities up there. It certainly beats the astro turf. We're training again today--that makes it seven sessions in eight days--but they got a respite on Wednesday. The lads have come back from their break in good shape and I'm delighted at the effort they've put in.

"We'd 20 bodies at Max High last night and that included three keepers I wanted to have a look at. Also two outfield players. Nicky Walker, the former Scotland, Rangers, Hearts and Aberdeen goalie made a special trip down from his home in Elgin to help assess the keepers. I've know him for many years and I appreciate him doing this as a 'one-off' special favour for me.

"We had five YTS youngsters, between the ages of 16 and 18, with us as well. It gave me the opportunity to have a look at the local talent to see how they could handle themselves. We want to encourage local players and give them a chance to be involved with their local team. We're currently in discussion with the S.F.A. and the Scottish Enterprise regarding funding--and we'll take it from there.

"We'll be having a 'bounce' game against Dumbarton next week at a neutral venue to help us prepare for the Annan Tournament next weekend. We're the holders of the trophy and want to retain it.

"I'm still working away to get new faces on board and, hopefully, players are now starting to make decisions".

Lewis Sloan and James Baty are now back at Palmerston following loan spells at Annan Athletic and Threave Rovers. Both will be closely monitored to see whether they stay with us or go out on loan again.

Testimonial reward for Andy 5th July 2007
This coming season will be an extra special one for Andy Aitken as 2008 heralds a testimonial year for the popular defender--10 years loyal service to Queen of the South.

The wheels are already in motion and an organising committee consisting of former Chairman, Norman Blount; ex-player and team-mate, Des McKeown and Craig Watson of Chefresh are already looking ahead.

Although nothing definite is planned yet, the committee hope to have a golf competition at the Dumfries and Galloway club in the spring; a Speakers' Dinner and, at the end of the season, a testimonial match at Palmerston--hopefully against Gretna. A booklet tracking Andy's footballing career is also expected to be published.

'Ackers' as he is affectionately know by the fans, first joined Queens as an 18-year-old in 1996 and in a successful eight year spell made over 260 appearances and was the club's longest serving player. In the summer of 2004 he got the opportunity of 'full-time' football at Gretna and naturally took up the challenge.

Andy say's 'bye' as he completed his final match before leaving for Gretna

Andy making his only start after a season long recovery

He recalls, "It was right on my doorstep so to speak and I would have been a fool to turn it down. All went well at first! I became club captain and was really enjoying myself when I was hit by injury. I lost my place and, with the squad being so strong, was unable to win it back".

He returned to Queens in the January 'Window' of 2006 and all went well until last season when he suffered an horrific cruciate injury in a pre-season friendly in Coleraine. Surgery was required and, as a result, Andy was sidelined for practically the whole season, his only start being in the final game against Airdrie.
To date he has made over 290 first team appearances in a Queens' shirt, so a testimonial is a fitting reward.

Season Review 30th June 2007
It's the month that we played six unbeaten games winning four - probably the month that convinced people that we could escape the drop. It all started out with a memorable victory just down the road in the township.

Kenny gets to work 29th June 2007
Our new assistant manager, Kenny Brannigan, began official duties this morning by assisting Gordon Chisholm with the first training session of the new season. Said Kenny, "It's just great to be involved again and I'm really looking forward to the challenge ahead! Queen of the South kick off their sixth season in the First Division and, for a part-time club, that's a magnificent achievement.

"I trained with the Queens' squad all last season so I know then all well. I've also known the gaffer since my Clydebank days--and that wasn't yesterday--15 years to be precise! So it's not as if I'm entering a new environment. It's a good set-up down here and I'm well impressed. I've just been out for my first look at the pitch and it's in good nick--in fact it's looking brilliant! So all credit to the groundsman and his staff. Over the years I've played at Palmerston loads of times and it's always been a good playing surface".

Now 42, Kenny admitted that he came close to signing for Queens on three or four occasions, back in the days of Willie Harkness, but it never came to be.

Added Gordon Chisholm, "Kenny's reliable and has a good knowledge of the game. It's so important to have someone working alongside you that you can trust--and I trust Kenny 100%".

No. 2 Appointed 28th June 2007
Manager Gordon Chisholm came out and named his new second in command this morning.

It's Kenny Brannigan, a well know figure in Scottish Football. As a player he was with Kilmarnock, Airdrieonians, Clydebank and Falkirk and also had a spell down south with Sheffield Wednesday. After 'hanging up his boots' he was manager of Queen's Park, and also assistant to Sandy Stewart at Airdrie United. Added Gordon,
"I'm delighted to have Kenny on board we played together at Clydebank and I know him well. He's been training regularly with the lads so he already knows them all well. He'll be 'clocking in' with the rest of the squad for pre-season training tomorrow morning".
