Neil Scally, who returns after a one match suspension, is added to the Queens' squad to meet Partick Thistle at Firhill on Saturday, but on-loan Hibs man, Des McCaffrey will be missing with a knee injury. Said manager, Ian McCall, "Des has been having a bit of trouble with his knee for a few weeks now, but it's gradually got worse. I'm 'resting' him on Saturday and I reckon he could be out for a couple of weeks. It's disappointing with Andy Aitken still about two months away from playing and it leaves us short on left-sided defenders".

Willie Gibson meanwhile is a 'man on a mission' and will be out to further impress Kilmarnock manager, Jim Jeffries. Said Willie, "He's been great and very helpful and he's told me I can come up and join the Killie lads for training anytime--with our own manager's permission of course".

Firhill bound 29th November 2006
Queens head for Firhill this Saturday hoping to get back on the victory trail again following their disappointing display at Clyde. Speaking to the 'Website' this afternoon Ian McCall stated, "Like ourselves, Partick Thistle are coming off the back of a 4-0 defeat so they'll be hurting as much as we are. They'll be doing their utmost to make amends to their fans and it's going to be hard, but we must do our best to bounce back once again and get a result. Firhill is right on my doorstep--only half a mile away--so naturally I'd like to do well. They beat us 2-0 at Palmerston earlier in the season but we missed so many clear-cut chances that afternoon and should have won at least 4-2".

Looking back to Saturday's woeful display at Broadwood the manager added, "We lost some dreadful goals and most of them came from daft mistakes. Three of them were deflections but it was the two just before the interval that 'killed' us. They had the gale in their backs in the first half but if we'd held them to 0-0 at half time anything could have happened.

"It's maybe too much to expect for our away performances to be as good as out last three home games, but we're still capable of playing a lot better on our travels than we have been. We lost heavily against both St Johnstone and Gretna but I rate them the top two teams in the league. But Clyde are a different status and we should have done a lot better against them than we did.

"I thought we'd 'turned the corner' after the Dundee game but it was not to be. However, if someone had offered me nine points from our last five matches a few weeks ago, I would have grabbed them. We're still above Airdrie and not too far behind Ross County and with two home games coming up after Saturday there's no panic in the camp".

Queens' Youths go down 26th November 2006
Queens' Youths crashed out of the SFA Youth Cup at the neutral venue of Ochilview this afternoon, going down 6-0 to Aberdeen's full under-19's side. Queens were a much younger team in all departments than their Don's counterparts so the scoreline doesn't disgrace them in any way. Our star players were keeper 'Dodo' Martin, Jack Steele and Michael Fulton--the latter having a great game.

Match reaction 25th November 2006
More away day woes for Queens at Broadwood this afternoon as two crazy goals in the space of as many minutes just before half time put Clyde on the winning track. However the home side totally dominated the first half and only poor finishing and some goalmouth clearances kept the scoreline at 0-0 for so long. A third goal from Arbuckle ten minutes into the second half put the result beyond doubt and a late penalty made the final scoreline 4-0. The final whistle must have some as a welcome relief for the hardy 114 Queens fans who had braved the Arctic wind blowing down from the Campsie Fells.

With our home form being so impressive at present with three clean sheets in a row it's hard to fathom how we can concede 14 goals in our last three away matches. The only consolation for Queens was the news that Airdrie United had lost at Dundee and Ross County had collected only one point at Hamilton. But alas for Queens it's back to the drawing board again.

Said Ian McCall after the match, "Our form away from home truly baffles me as we've been playing so well at Palmerston. One mad minute just prior to the interval cost us the game. My own personal thoughts are that we're making far too many individual mistakes and if that can't be sorted out then it's up to me to change personnel." On Willie Gibson the manager added, "Considering he knew that Jim Jeffries was in the stand watching he did okay but in the last half-hour he perhaps tried too hard to impress."

School visitations 24th November 2006
The Dumfries and Galloway Council's 'Active Schools Programme' kicked-off this week and has been voted a big success by all concerned. Working in conjunction with Queen of the South F.C. Actions Schools co-ordinator, Andy McLean stated, "I've heard nothing but good reports and my colleague, Chris Topping, says the same. To date five schools have already been visited Kells, Hecklegirth, New Abbey, Sanquhar Primary and today, Holywood. We have a break next week then we have three more visits to Auchencairn, Lockerbie Primary and finish up at Collin. This has been only a pilot scheme but requests have been coming in 'thick and fast' from other schools so there's a good chance that we may well continue the project with more visits in the new year".

Added Queens' skipper, Jim Thomson, "It's been a most enjoyable experience for me as I love meeting the kids, talking about football and answering all their questions. Everywhere we've been we've been photographed and at Hecklegirth school on Wednesday even Border TV turned up which was a thrill for all the pupils. But I must thank all those who set up the scheme in the first place and also my two team-mates, Paul Burns and Scott Robertson, for taking charge of proceedings up at Sanquhar when I was unavailable".

Today at Holywood all the pupils were waiting in anticipation. Said head teacher, Mrs Catherine Ross, "It's been nothing but Jim Thomson, Jim Thomson, Jim Thomson all morning. Most of our 36 pupils support Queen of the South and they've been so excited waiting on his arrival".

Main sponsor of the project is the Cumberland Building Society and local branch manager, Claire Crossan stressed, "We like to get involved with sport, especially where children are concerned and we are very happy to be involved in this worthwhile venture".

Also in attendance was Queen of the South Chairman David Rae who confessed, "It's the first time I've managed along to one of those presentations but have found it to be extremely interesting and enjoyable. Jim Thomson's so good with the youngsters and it's a bit of practise for him as well with one of his own coming on".

Neil Scally, who has been suspended for one game following his 'red card' against Dundee, will miss this Saturday's match at Broadwood. However, Murray Henderson returns to the squad after nine weeks on the sidelines after his knee injury back in August. Ironically, it was against Clyde that Murray sustained the injury following a nasty tackle by Dougie Imrie. He recalled, "It was a bad one and at first it was estimated that I'd be out for four to five weeks, but it's been double that so it's a long time. At least I've been named in the squad for this week--but whether I play or not I'll just have to wait and see as all the lads did so well last Saturday".

Added Ian McCall, "Murray played for over an hour in Monday night's training match against the Crichton and it's good to have him back especially with 'Scall' out. Colin Scott aggravated his thigh strain in Saturday's game but did well to stay on for the full 90 minutes although everyone could see he was suffering. That's three 'clean sheets' in a row he's had and we're all hoping he'll be OK for the Clyde match, but I think he will. Our talks with Allan Ferguson are on the 'back burner' at the moment, but we do need cover in that department. I hope Willie Gibson returns from his week's trial with Kilmarnock upbeat and 'raring to go'. He had a great game against Dundee and I'm looking for more of the same at Broadwood".

The wilds of Broadwood 22nd November 2006
It's off to the wilds of Broadwood this Saturday so don't forget your winter woollies! Queens are still seeking their first away win of the season and three points would do us just nicely. We did beat them 4-2 at Palmerston in the CIS Cup back in August but six weeks later we were well beaten 2-0 in the league at Palmerston in probably our 'worst display of the season'--and could well have been more.

Broadwood is never an easy place to pick up points but in the past four seasons, since we won promotion, we have done reasonably well--winning two and drawing one in eight meetings. And don't forget, we beat Brechin City up there to lift the Challenge Cup. Clyde actually lost to Ross County in the final of that self same competition on Sunday but drew with their old Glasgow rivals, Partick Thistle, tonight so it may be a rather tired side we face on Saturday. But they can never be underestimated!

However, only four points separate us with Ross County who snatched a point against St Johnstone thanks to a late penalty but we now have three clubs 'catchable'--Ross County, Dundee and Clyde. But don't rule out Livingston either the way they're going.

Oor Wullie's doing well 22nd November 2006
Speaking to the 'Website' tonight Willie Gibson admitted he's now really enjoying his training stint with Premier league Kilmarnock. Said the wing wizard, "I was a bit nervous on Monday morning but I've settled down now. We're not actually training at Rugby Park or anywhere like that, it's at the Science Park just outside Glasgow where Queens themselves train every Monday and Tuesday. So, at least I know the place well.

"Naturally, I didn't know any of the Killie players at first but I recognised a lot of them having been up against then in the CIS Cup game back in August. But Andy Barrowman was there and came up and and started talking and introduced me to some of the others. Andy's been great and I appreciated his support! But with Queens up there on the Tuesday I ended up doing a double session--in the morning I trained with the Killie lads and in the afternoon with my own team-mates. So, you could say, I'm getting the 'best of both worlds', but I'm thoroughly enjoying the experience.

"I'm back down home at nights so I see the girlfriend and the kids, and I'll be home again on Friday night all set for the trip to Broadwood on Saturday".

Training Match 21st November 2006
In a training match at KGV last night Queens beat Crichton's Southern Counties side 6-1. Michael Mullen netted four with Lewis Sloan and James Baty notching one apiece. Queens fielded quite a few of their young players but Murray Henderson did play for a full hour and is expected to be drafted into the squad for Saturday's visit to Broadwood to replace Neil Scally who will be suspended.

Ian McCall played for the entire second half and at the final whistle named himself as 'Man of the Match'. First team coach Stevie Morrison (Snowy) came on as sub for the last 15 minutes, so it was a varied assortment. As one player joked, "Our chairman, Davy Rae, was missing from the line-up. He was still recovering from heart strain after the Dundee match".

Andy has his say 20th November 2006
Speaking to the 'Website' this afternoon Andy Barrowman said he was quite happy to sign on for another month and added, "Although my ambition is to play in the Premier league I enjoy it here at Palmerston. All the players are great, the fans have been great and so too have the results in our last three home games where we've picked up nine points. I knew my loan spell was coming to an end but fortunately I was in a 'no lose' situation. I spoke to Ian McCall after Saturday's match and he said he wanted me to stay on and I told him I was happy do so. On the other hand, had Killie wanted me back I would have gone and fought hard to win a place in their First Team squad. As it turned out Jim Jeffries OK'd the loan extension, so that was it! However, I'd much rather be playing in the First Division where there are decent gates and a good atmosphere than in the Premier Reserve League which sometimes sees about 50 fans watching.
"I'm only sorry I haven't managed to score for Queens yet but I know I can score goals and if I'm patient they will come. I feel my performances have been good and that's the important thing so I'm not too worried. I've had my chances--probably the header I missed against Partick Thistle was the best one--but at that time nothing was going our way and you always need a bit of luck in football.
"I like to keep myself fit and train four times a week--Monday and Tuesday at Rugby Park and Thursday and Friday in Dumfries. I get on well with all the lads at Palmerston and staying in Motherwell I travel back and forward with Jim Lauchlan, Colin Scott and my strike partner, 'Weiro', and a lot of other players as well. So we all have a good laugh together! My aim at present is to help Queens get more points on the board in the next four games and see them move up the table. After that, well, we'll just have to see what happens".

Andy to stay on 20th November 2006
Queens today finalised a deal with Kilmarnock which allows Andy Barrowman a month's extension on his present loan deal. To date the big striker has made eight first team appearances and, although he has yet to find the net, has played a major role in our recent run of three home wins. The new extension will see him through to December 20th and eligible to take part in our next four matches.

Said Ian McCall, "I spoke with Jim Jeffries this morning and I'm delighted he's agreed to let us have Andy for another month. He's big, he's strong and had another excellent game for us against Dundee and was one of our many stars on Saturday. The Rugby Park management team of Billy Brown and Jim himself have been most co-operative in the proceedings and their assistance is much appreciated".

Match reaction 18th November 2006
After the 5-0 thumping last week Queens came back in style with a gutsy 2-0 victory over Dundee. It was our first home league victory over the Dens Parkers since December 1978 and how the crowd loved it and gave the team a deserved standing ovation at the end. Despite finishing with ten men and 'keeper Colin Scott limping for three quarters of the game they fought like tigers for the points. After the Gretna scenario Ian McCall insisted that if they could bounce back and beat Dundee it would be nine points from four games and any manager would settle for that, and fortunately his wish came true.

At the final whistle the manager stressed it was a great result and added, "For the first ten minutes and the last ten minutes we were under the cosh but apart from that we coped well in spite of the heavy conditions. I was very pleased with the whole team - every one of them played their hearts out and I couldn't ask for any better effort. I've always maintained that in this league you must win your home games and that's what we're doing now. Weiro and Andy Barrowman worked like beavers this afternoon and I must thank Jim Jeffries and Billy Brown up at Kilmarnock for allowing Andy out on loan. Rarely have I seen a striker prepared to track back and work so hard and he's definitely capable of playing at a higher level. As for Weiro he never stopped running and that's the second game in a row that he's won a man of the match award and deservedly so. John O'Neill is a proven goalscorer and that's ten he's got this season albeit several of them from the penalty spot and I can only say he's a true professional and a joy to work with. But our twelfth man today was our groundsman Kevin McCormick and you can add to that all the dedicated fans who turned out this morning to work on the park and enable the game to go ahead."

Said Graham Weir, "Considering we got hammered 5-0 last week it was a great win for us and three valuable points. They had two very big men at the back in Bobby Mann and Greg Strong and it was a real battle.. The park wasn't at its best, it amazed me that the game was played at all. It's just a pity Airdrie won today as we would have opened up a bigger gap."

John O'Neill proved to be 'Mr Cool' once again as he slotted the opener from the penalty spot to make his record with Queens 24 from 26. But he admitted, "The two I missed I tried to place so since then I've always blasted them. However I saw Del Lyle having a word with their 'keeper and changed my patter and placed it right in the corner." For his second strike he praised 'Weiro', "He laid it on inch perfect and I had the easy job of slipping it under the 'keeper".

Dundee boss Alex Rae conceded, "Queens deserved their win, they were much hungrier than we were. Both goals came from defensive errors and we were punished. I can't work it out how we can go to Gretna and win 4-0 yet can't get a result at Palmerston and I don't say that with any disrespect to Queens who seem to raise their game against us."

Chairman David Rae said that three vital factors contributed to the match taking place:
1. Groundsman Kevin McCormick and all those from the action group who turned up at 8.30 this morning to work on the park.
2. Gretna FC for giving us the loan of their two Bow Driers which enabled us to drain all the surface water off the park.
3. Divine intervention, which blessed us with four or five hours of sunshine just prior to kick-off.

Schools' Visitation Programme commences 17th November 2006
Queen of the South commence their pilot Schools' Visitation Programme on Monday with a visit to Kells Primary. It will be some consolation for the pupils and staff of the Galloway school who earlier this week lost out on Border TVs 'Peoples Millions' programme. .

Team captain, Jim Thomson, will be in charge of proceedings and will be assisted on his travels by other members of the Queens' squad. The entire project is linked to the Dumfries and Galloway Council's 'Active Schools Programme' and in this pilot scheme eight schools will be visited in the space of 17 days. Said the Queens' skipper, "To kick-off we'll have three sessions at Kells Primary between 9.15 am and 12 noon and we're all really looking forward to the challenge".

On Wednesday it's on to the Annandale area with the venue Hecklegirth in the afternoon. New Abbey and Sanquhar Primary will follow on Thursday and Holywood on the Friday. December will see the Stewartry visited again with Auchencairn the destination on Wednesday 6th, and on the following day Lockerbie and Collin will get a visit. So a busy time is ahead for Jim Thomson and his helpers.

One of the main sponsors of this scheme is the Dumfries branch of the Cumberland Building Society. Said head of Marketing, Chris McDonald, "We have many branches throughout Cumbria and South West Scotland which support Carlisle United and are keen to promote the development of sport throughout our community. We though it only proper to support Queen of the South on this new project and are pleased to do so".

Another sponsor to whom the organisers are grateful is the Manchester company, Polyflor.

Two key players are listed as 50-50 for Saturday's clash with Dundee at Palmerston. Keeper, Colin Scott and midfielder, Neil Scally are both nursing injuries but Ian McCall is doing his best to be positive. Said the manager at training tonight, "Colin is still having a bit of trouble with his thigh strain but he is improving while 'Scall' had to come off at Gretna with an injured foot, but he's as 'hard as nails' and will want to play. So, we're keeping our fingers crossed that both will make it".

He then added, "Andy Aitken and Paul Burns are, of course, still unavailable but are progressing. I'm looking forward to having the pair of them back as they're badly missed.

Allan Ferguson hasn't yet put pen to paper but could well be on the bench as a 'trialist' come Saturday, but we won't be rushing him into anything. We've a Reserve match against Queen's Park at Palmerston on Monday night and I certainly intend playing him in that".

No panic in the camp 15th November 2006
The 13th league match of the season proved to be unlucky one for us, but despite the 5-0 defeat at Gretna on Saturday there's still no panic in the Queen of the South camp. This time last year we were actually a point less with only seven points to our credit and, in fact, we had to wait until the 24th game before recording our second win, 2-0 at home to Airdrie.

However we must go all out to beat Dundee this coming Saturday as we have two difficult away fixtures to follow, Clyde and Partick Thistle. We only managed to beat Dundee once in our four meetings last season, but that was that memorable encounter up at Dens Park when we fought back to win 3-2 which turned out to be our first massive step on the way to survival.

Reflecting back on the 'local derby' with Gretna Ian McCall said, "It was a bad day from 'the word go' when Colin Scott had to be pulled out of the squad with a thigh strain. I was going to play Allan Ferguson but he felt he wasn't quite match fit yet for such a big game so we had to leave him on the bench and put Barry John Corr in goal. Gretna were by far the better team and deserved to win but we made it easy for them and I felt sorry for all our travelling fans who deserve more. Individual errors by certain players again led to our downfall. To lose such a bad goal so early was a bitter blow and, as I've just said, it was all down to an individual error.

"However, we must now try and put the Gretna disappointment behind us and focus solely on beating Dundee at the weekend. If we can it will be nine points from four games and any manager would take that. We only beat Dundee once last season and that was at Dens Park but it proved to be a very important one and set us off on a great run which saw us lose only one game in ten. I only hope that our fans will rally round and get behind us again! They were brilliant in both the Livi and Ross County matches and their support means so much to us all.

"Colin McMenamin stated in a Sunday newspaper that certain 'taunts' by myself had fired them up for the 'local derby'. His remarks deeply hurt both me and my family for I don't recall saying anything derogatory against any Gretna player in the build up to the match. I don't even know the lad McMenamin and I don't know where he's coming from.

"I was shocked to hear of the sacking of Sandy Stewart at Airdrie. I know Sandy extremely well and I feel heart sorry for him and his family. He was with me at Airdrieonians and I was instrumental in getting him the manager's job at New Broomfield. Queens versus Dundee 15th November 2006
last season's 2 games in Dumfries was Dundee's first visit on league business for 25 years (won 1, drew 1) so consequently the "Dark Blues" are unbeaten in the league at Palmerston since 1978. The teams, in fact, have only played each other 60 times since the first meeting in 1933. The first four game's results were 5-0 and 8-0 at Dens but Queens won the home games 1-0, 3-1.

John Henry to leave 14th November 2006
Ian McCall announced today that midfielder John Henry will be leaving the club by mutual agreement on Thursday. The manager added, "I had a chat with John and although I was prepared to keep him through to the January 'Window' he said he'd rather leave now and I quite understand his reasoning. It will give him a chance to talk to other clubs and I'm sure he'll do very well at a side in a league lower than us for he's still a very good player. Our good wishes go with John".

Keeper set to sign 14th November 2006
The manager also stated this afternoon that he hopes to sign Allan Ferguson very soon. Said Ian, "I'm not sure whether we'll have it all tied up before Saturday but if not he'll be listed as a 'trialist' and on the bench again against Dundee. And, hopefully, Colin Scott will be back in goal". The 37-year-old ex-Falkirk keeper stands 5 feet 11inches and is vastly experienced having spent four years at his former club and prior to that he was with Airdrie. 37 he may be but many great keepers have played well into their forties and two which immediately come to mind are our own Allan Ball and George Farm.

Well done! 13th November 2006
A special mention to our groundsman, Kevin McCormick, and his partner, Isla Boyd (who also works at Palmerston). At the weekend they organised three separate events to raise funds for the annual 'Children in Need' appeal and the sum raised was in excess of £700. On Friday night there was a disco in the Palmerston Lounge, on Saturday a Five-a-side football tournament at the King George V complex and a Car Boot Sale in the Palmerston car park on Sunday. Well done to you both!

Heartwarming moment 13th November 2006
There was a heartwarming moment during half-time at Raydale Park on Saturday when Queen of the South club doctor, Guy Beaumont, met up again with George McCracken, the Gretna supporter whose life he saved when the two clubs last met at Palmerston back in August. When George was entering the ground he took a bad turn and his heart actually stopped but fortunately Guy was on hand with his defibrillator to get it going again which was a blessing. George was only released from hospital a few weeks ago and it was his first time back at a match since the incident occured. But the result would certainly please him.

Something else to think about 11th November 2006
Some interesting bits and pieces today to take your mind of the defeat at Raydale. Firstly well done to Annan Athletic for lifting the Scottish Qualifying Cup for the first time in their history with a 3-1 victory over Preston Athletic at Fir Park, hopefully Danny Dunglinson's suspected broken leg won't be as bad as first thought. Well done to Michael Jack for his two goals, Michael is a Carlisle lad who spent a few weeks training at Queens a few seasons back. Also in the English FA Cup there was a rare match up between two former Queen of the South players. York City played host to Bristol City with Bowser in midfield for the side fifth in the Conference and Jamie McAllister featuring for the side from the South West of England. It turned out a close encounter but the high flying League One side did enough to clinch the game with a second half goal to secure a 1-0 victory.
Match reaction 11th November 2006
After all the hype and expectations which preceded this local derby alas it was the same old story for Queens but this time around Gretna actually scored two more goals. It took two pitch inspections before referee Kenny Clark passed the park playable but after just half an hour and three nil down Queens fans were wishing he had called it off which would have saved us another 5-0 trouncing. Queens were dealt a major blow before the game even started when Colin Scott, who had been immense last week called off with a thigh strain and had to be replaced by Barry John Corr and the fact that Barry has conceded ten goals in his last two outings must be a worrying factor.

Ian McCall admitted, "We were well beaten by a better team. Their two strikers were very sharp and caused us a lot of bother. The last time we played Gretna we had excuses, but today we had none. It may be just three points dropped but it means a lot more than that to the people of Dumfries, myself included. As usual we had a great support and I felt so sorry for them."

Rowan Alexander however was a much happier man and said, "I'm well satisfied with that result. It was a very accomplished all round performance and we were well rewarded for our effort. We had a couple of relapses in the first half but were in control for most of the game."

It was Stevie Tosh's birthday today so no doubt he'll be out celebrating in Dumfries tonight after netting the opening goal.

Captain Sensible 10th November 2006
One Queens' player who will be sitting anxiously, fingers crossed, in the Raydale Park dressing room come 2 pm on Saturday is club captain, Jim Thomson. Jim lost his place after two yellow cards at St Johnstone three weeks ago saw him suspended and he's 'paid the penalty' big time.

Recalls the skipper, "Although I got the double caution which resulted in me being sent off I felt the decision was rather harsh. But I've only got myself to blame.! As I missed the first Gretna game owing to injury I was really looking forward to this match but there's every chance I could miss out again. I would have loved to play against my old mate, Derek Townsley. 'Degsy' and I signed for Queens at the same time and we've always kept in touch.

"However, all credit to the lads, who have been brilliant in those last two games and won them both. If it's an unchanged line-up on Saturday then no player could argue at that. It's going to be a 'waiting game' for us all until the gaffer comes in and reads the team out. He admits himself he's in a dilemma but he can only have 11 players on the park and 5 in the dug-out so we must accept that.

"Although I'm captain I've no divine right to be an automatic choice but it would be great to be involved in any way. Nevertheless, whether I'm on the park, on the bench or even sitting in the stand I'll be shouting the boys on. It's not about individuals--the club comes first!".

A welcome dilemma 9th November 2006
With players now fast recovering from injury Ian McCall is facing a new dilemma--who to play and who to leave out? He explains, "Let's face it! On Saturday we had players of the calibre of Jim Thomson, Stephen Swift and Andy Thomson sitting on the bench but that's a problem I can live with. It's far better than a few weeks ago when we had to draft in 'on loan' players to keep going. Last Saturday was the first time I had the luxury of fielding an unchanged side this season but if need be I will make changes on Saturday despite the fact we've won two in a row. It won't be easy but I can't let my heart rule my head!"

After coming through Monday night's Reserve game at Morton OK, Murray Henderson is added to the squad to face Gretna. The big defender has been sidelined for seven weeks with a bad ankle injury. The manager is also contemplating giving Stephen Swift his first start of the season after coming off the bench and doing well in the last two matches. 'Swifty' has been plagued by injury since August but it is hoped his pace could help in midfield.

Although Ian McCall has only two players now on the injured list, Andy Aitken and Paul Burns, he was quick to point out, "They are both crucial members of the squad and will be missing for a while yet. If I had to pick two star players in our 'great escape' last season Andy and 'Burnsy' would be that pair--they give so much to the club". As most fans know, Andy is recovering from a major cruciate operation and Paul is also suffering with a knee problem and may have to go in for minor surgery.

Big match preview 8th November 2006
It's hard to credit but only two and a half weeks ago 11 dejected Queens' players trooped off McDiarmid Park after a 5-0 drubbing by St Johnstone. At the same time 100 or so disillusioned Queens' fans made their way to their buses and cars for the long, sad journey back to Dumfries. But now, only 18 days later and after two home wins those same supporters are scrambling for tickets for Saturdays local derby at Gretna and money is being wagered on Queens to beat their Dumfriesshire rivals on this, their first ever visit to Raydale Park in a Scottish League fixture. How the tide has turned!

Admittedly, Gretna start firm favourites with the 'bookies' but an away win is not beyond the realms of possibility. Let's face it, as manager Rowan Alexander admitted on the 'Website' only yesterday, their home form has not been brilliant and like ourselves have won only two out of six. Queens will also be looking to close the five point gap between them and Ross County and with the Dingwall men involved in the Challenge Cup final on Sunday they'll have no match this Saturday.

Reports have it that Queens could well finish with close on 1000 fans at Raydale which will make it a great occasion and a tremendous atmosphere, but the last thing either club wants is the spectacle marred by any crowd trouble.

Following all the build-up and euphoria for our last meeting at Palmerston which saw Gretna triumph 3-0, Ian McCall admitted he was bitterly disappointed at the result."Not so much for myself" said the manager, "More for all our fans who were 'gutted' after so much pre-match expectation. However, up until they scored I thought we were the better team, but those two 'killer goals' late in the first half finished us and to be honest Gretna could easily have scored five as we 'ran out of steam' in the last half hour. But much of that was down to our hectic schedule of eight games in four weeks plus the fact that we went to extra time with Premier League, Kilmarnock, in a cup-tie only four days prior to the match. We also had major injury problems at that time and even in the game itself our two top strikers had to leave the field with serious injuries which was another blow.

"However we're much better prepared this time around with most of our injury victims back in action again. We've won our last two games, had two 'clean sheets and also netted four goals which has made me a lot happier. Barrowman and Weir are linking well up front, our defence is solid and we now have more options in midfield.

"The Chairman and Directors have been great and made funds available which allowed me to bring in new players when our injury problems were at their worst--and that's what I needed most. But, having said that, we now have too many players here with the injuries gradually clearing up. I think we'll have to release four or five in the January Windows and try and bring in two or three better quality ones. I must also praise the fans who have been super during our bad spell. At times I've had a 'bit of stick' myself but that all 'part and parcel' of football and I often feel it's because I'm a Dumfries boy. Even at Falkirk I 'took stick' and I had lost only one match--it just goes with the job. I'm fully expecting a big Queen' following on Saturday for I'm sure we could have sold about four times as many tickets as we were allocated. Nevertheless, I'm certain our fans will outshout and outsing the home support".

Asked about his 'Lucky Cap' which has seen us win the last two encounters, Ian smiled and remarked, "I'm not all that superstitious but it was a nice gesture by Alex to give it back. It's been well enough chronicled now in both the local and national press but as long as thing go well I'll keep it to the end of the season and return it to Alex then".

Manager praises Gordon 7th November 2006
In the build up for Saturday's big match at Gretna, Ian McCall today praised his recently recruited assistant manager, Gordon Chisholm, and insisted that it was no coincidence that results had improved since he came on board. Said Ian, "Although I'm still fully in charge his arrival has allowed me to 'step back' a bit. Players get fed up of hearing the same old voice over and over again, so Gordon comes in and takes over when I've had my say. It's the old story, 'Two heads are better than One' at times!

McCall and Chisholm - friends reunited
"Gordon is one of the best qualified coaches in Scotland and I can confidently leave him in full charge of training. After all, he's competed at the highest level and was captain of Sunderland (in the old English First Division) and also skippered both Hibs and Dundee in a long and distinguished playing career. So he is well respected by all the players.

"Stevie Morrison, our First Team coach, is of course still very actively involved and we all know each other well. All three of us were together at Clydebank for three years and we work well as a team".

The manager insisted that more concentrated training could also be the answer to the improved results of late and added, "We have now upped our training schedule which may well have helped. Providing there's no Reserve fixture we train in Glasgow on Monday afternoon with a double session in the evening. We have another session at the same venue on the Tuesday, but on Thursday nights and Friday mornings we train at Dumfries. On top of that we have a light session on Saturday mornings at Palmerston if we are at home. Obviously, those players who work can't make it to every session, but normally we have a reasonable turnout".

Rowan has his say 7th November 2006
Speaking to the 'Website' this afternoon Gretna manager, Rowan Alexander, stated that he's really looking forward to Saturday's tussle but stressed, "Back in August we won comfortably at Palmerston, but I've got a feeling that this will be a much tougher and tighter game. Queens have had a lot of injury problems but are now gradually getting bodies back. They've had two good wins on the trot and two 'clean sheets' into the bargain which will act as a great confidence booster, but I must say I think they are a much better side than their present league position reflects.

"They have a lot of good experienced players at Palmerston! Graham Weir is always a danger up front and I was impressed with the Australian lad, Warren Moon, when I saw him in action. As far as Queens are concerned I really think they can turn it around once again and remain in the First Division. And if they can perform as well as they have done over the past couple of weeks, they will".
On his own team's prospects the ex-Queens' striker said, "Our away form has been good but our home performances haven't matched it, so we'll be all out to rectify that. We always knew it would be hard in Division One. It's the tightest league in Scottish football and has been for the last two or three years. Just ask any manager in our division and they'll agree that anyone can beat anyone else.

"When we were first promoted there was a high expectancy level but we were under no illusions ourselves of the task that lay ahead and, on occasions, we have tasted the 'not so nice side'. But we're still up there in contention that's where we aim to stay".

From his managerial days at Queens
Ian McCall gives his views on the big match on the 'Website' tomorrow.

Match reaction 4th November 2006
"Queens are off the bottom of the table", a statement few fans would have dreamt off two weeks ago and it was another inspired second half performance and another 2-0 victory, this time over Ross County, that takes us up to the eight point mark. However it required a last minute winner by 10 man Livingston over Airdrie United to make it possible. Ian McCall wore his 'lucky cap' again and we all sincerely hope that it will be on his head at Gretna next Saturday.

Said the manager after the game, "The first half wasn't pretty and it all seemed to be played in front of the dug-outs but the second period was a big improvement. Never the less it's two home wins on the trot, two clean sheets and four goals scored so I'm not complaining at that and I must add that Gordon Chisholm's arrival at Palmerston wasn't just a coincidence in our successes those past couple of weeks. I was proud of the whole team today, they showed tremendous spirit. Weiro got the sponsors man of the match award but it could well have gone to any one of the players. Personally I thought Dessie McCaffrey was outstanding. We worked on set pieces in our pre-match training session this morning and it paid off when Weiro scored the opener. In our next two games we face Gretna away and Dundee at home and I'm sure we can take something from both of these matches but I'm not getting over confident for our first target is still eighth place".

Although Graham Weir lost his face mask this week he had a cracking game and was thrilled to net his first league goal. Said Weiro, "I never really missed the mask! It was great to score and it came from a set piece we'd been practicing earlier in the day. their 'keeper Craig Samson is a good mate of mine as we played together for Scotland at youth level. I don't think I've ever scored against him before and although he got a touch to it' it was good to see it in the back of the net. I'm now looking forward to the Gretna match next week, it was against them that I got my cheekbone smashed so I hope it will be a happier occasion this time around."

John O'Neill who scored the vital second goal added, "It was a big match for us but I felt we were on top for most of the game. It was a superb cross from Willie Gibson which set up my goal and I think it's my eighth of the season. Although we were bottom of the league for a long time the morale was always high and I think we fully deserved to take the six points from these last two games."

Match preview 2nd November 2006
This Saturday Queens play hosts to Ross County who will make the long 240mile trip to Dumfries. Earlier in the season they beat us 1-0 at Dingwall so we will be all out for revenge and another three points to close the gap between us and them. Although our four games last season were close they were one of the sides we failed to beat but County have struggled to take points on their travels this time around which could work in our favour. But as Ian McCall stated after Saturday's win over Livvie that result will mean nothing if we don't take something from this Saturday's game.

Over the Moon 31st October 2006
Although there were plaudits all round on Saturday, one player who deserves a special mention is Warren Moon who made his first team debut. Warren was naturally thrilled to get on from the start and confessed, "The wet pitch and heavy going made it very tiring on the legs and I didn't complain too much when the manager pulled me off after 75 minutes. 'Swifty' came on as a sub and it was a good move for he can run all day. The fans were brilliant and I could hear them from the stand and from up the side urging me on and that kept me going. I'd say my performance was satisfying rather than startling, however it was a great game and a super result. Up to now I've only featured in Reserve games and training matches but now I've got the taste of first team football I love it and I'd like to think that I've done enough to keep my spot in the team".

Warren looks to get forward
So to say that the likeable Aussie is 'over the moon' is an understatement!

And some punters even posted their appreciation on the websites. But, said 'Gentleman John', "It was nothing special, it's just a thing I always do whether we win or lose. It's always been my belief that in football you've got to take the rough with the smooth! All credit to Queens though, they 'rode their luck' early on and scored the two goals that mattered. Colin Scott is still a good keeper and pulled off some marvellous saves but Queens' showed remarkable fighting spirit for a side who were hammered 5-0 at St Johnstone the week previous".
