Over the Moon 31st October 2006
Although there were plaudits all round on Saturday, one player who deserves a special mention is Warren Moon who made his first team debut. Warren was naturally thrilled to get on from the start and confessed, "The wet pitch and heavy going made it very tiring on the legs and I didn't complain too much when the manager pulled me off after 75 minutes. 'Swifty' came on as a sub and it was a good move for he can run all day. The fans were brilliant and I could hear them from the stand and from up the side urging me on and that kept me going. I'd say my performance was satisfying rather than startling, however it was a great game and a super result. Up to now I've only featured in Reserve games and training matches but now I've got the taste of first team football I love it and I'd like to think that I've done enough to keep my spot in the team".

Warren looks to get forward
So to say that the likeable Aussie is 'over the moon' is an understatement!

No new 'keeper 30th October 2006
Ian McCall has decided against bringing in a new on loan goalkeeper. Said the manager, "Colin Scott had a great game on Saturday, we've got Allan Ferguson training with us and about a fortnight away from fitness and we've also got Barry John Corr and 'Dodo' Martin available if required".

Gentleman John 30th October 2006
Doonhamer fans were quick to notice the sporting gesture by Livvy manager, John Robertson, at full-time on Saturday when he waited and shook hands with all the Queens' players as they left the field. And some punters even posted their appreciation on the websites. But, said 'Gentleman John', "It was nothing special, it's just a thing I always do whether we win or lose. It's always been my belief that in football you've got to take the rough with the smooth! All credit to Queens though, they 'rode their luck' early on and scored the two goals that mattered. Colin Scott is still a good keeper and pulled off some marvellous saves but Queens' showed remarkable fighting spirit for a side who were hammered 5-0 at St Johnstone the week previous".

Man of the Match 30th October 2006
Winner of the man of the match voting this weekend was Neil Scally (who also won £25 in the daily draw today), second place went to Colin Scott with Andrew Barrowman third.

The full scores have been added to the match report and the new Player of the Season league table has been updated along with the scoring spreadsheet. Thanks for voting.
Match reaction 28th October 2006
A five star performance by Queens today and the kind of display the home fans have been waiting for all season. As the players trooped off the park at full-time with the sound of the 'Dambusters march' ringing in their ears Livvie manager John Robertson shook each and every hand in one of the most sporting gestures seen at Palmerston for many a long day.

It was a first league win of the season, our first league goals at home this season and the gap on Airdrie United has now closed two points. Ian McCall was delighted at the win and also the overall performance and credited the victory to the return of his 'lucky cap', explained the manager, "I wore the same black cap in practically every game during our great run last season but I put it up for auction after we beat Brechin. It was won by our announcer Alec Wilson, (better known to all as Lord Palmerston), but I met Alec in the corridor before kick-off and he gave me the cap back. I put it on there and then and we won. So I'll certainly be wearing it again next Saturday. On the match itself Ian said, "We soaked up a bit of pressure early on, Colin Scott made a super save to keep us in the game. After that we were well on top but the vital first goal was a long time in coming. I brought Andy Thomson on and he did what I hoped he'd do - stick the ball in the back of the net. And once we scored there was only going to be one winner, however two players I'd like to mention specially are Andrew Barrowman and Colin Scott, I don't think I've ever seen a striker work so hard and run so much. And as for 'Scooter' he made some super saves at critical periods of the match."

Added skipper for the day and sponsors Man of the Match, Neil Scally, "That win was a heck of a long time in coming but up to now we just weren't getting any breaks. A wee bit of luck always helps."

Although disappointed Livingston boss John Robertson was lavish in his praise of Queen of the South, said John, "I've always maintained that to score the first goal in this league is so important. Colin Scott denied us that when we were on top and that proved the turning point in the game. After that Queens came at us and Andy Thomson came on and scored within a few minutes. We then had to push forward and there's always a danger of being caught out at the back and that's exactly what happened. But all credit to Queens. Their attitude was tremendous after losing 5-0 last week. The longer the game went on the better they got.

Amateurs? 27th October 2006
Anyone read the Fanzine pages in today's 'Daily Record'. An enjoyable article by Jim Thomson's partner, Victoria, was marred by the heading--'Amateur Footballers' Wives'. Bottom of the league we may be, but we ain't no Amateurs. The club is totally professional and Jim himself has been a professional footballer now for around 15 years.

Queens v Livvy 26th October 2006
Queens play hosts to Livingston this Saturday and all Doonhamer fans will be hoping for their first home win in the league this season. It's almost seven years since the Almondvale side were last at Palmerston--it was in the Scottish Cup in January 2000--but for obvious reasons we won't mention the score.

On the match itself Ian McCall said, "Livingston started as one of the pre-season favourites for promotion and are up there and still very much 'in the hunt'. Going back to our early season match up at Almondvale I felt we ran them very close and only two goals late in the game ensured them of victory. So, come Saturday, we must try our utmost to do that little bit better and get that ball in the back of the net for a change. We have the home advantage this time around and we must make it count as we desperately need points on the board".

Team News 26th October 2006
Skipper, Jim Thomson is suspended for one game and will be out for the Livingston match. Paul Burns and Des McCaffrey are both carrying 'knocks' and are listed as 50-50, but Colin Scott is rated 80-20 to play which is heartening news for Queens' fans. Young Darren Martin will be on the bench as 'stand-by' keeper but, if all goes well, Ian McCall hopes to have an experienced goalie joining us on Monday.

Also added to the squad are Stephen Swift and Mark Whorlow who could well make their first team debuts. Said the manager, "Both of them did exceptionally well in the reserve match against Gretna on Monday night and deserve a chance".

New Assistant Manager 26th October 2006
Gordon Chisholm joined the club as Assistant Manager tonight. Commenting on the appointment Ian McCall stated, "Gordon is a very experienced and accomplished coach and is highly thought of in Scottish football. He has all the coaching medals going, including some at European level. I worked with him for many years and I'm delighted he's agreed to join me again here at Palmerston.

"As a team we were at Clydebank together, we finished second in the league at Airdrieonians, won the First Division Championship while at Falkirk and were side by side during my spell at Tannadice".

Added Gordon himself, "Queen of the South are a well respected club with a great potential and a long history. I'm very pleased to come to Palmerston and to join forces with Ian McCall once again. I know how he works and we have had a relative amount of success over the years. I've just had a look round the ground and the facilities are excellent. There's also a good squad of players and as I've been 'out of the game' since January I'm looking forward to the new challenge".

Apart from the clubs already mentioned by the manager, Gordon has also served as assistant manager at Partick Thistle and Ross County. So he comes with a good pedigree.

It can be done! 25th October 2006
After our poorest league start on record, Ian McCall is hoping for 'history to repeat itself'. Said the manager, "We're not dead and buried yet! We've still 26 games to play and an awful lot can happen between now and the end of the season. What's so important is to get that first league win under our belts.

"Take season 1975-76 for example, and I remember it well. We managed only one win in our first 15 league matches then, after beating Dunfermline Athletic 5-2 at Palmerston, we went on an unbeaten run of 12 games, knocking both St Johnstone and Ayr United out of the Scottish Cup in the process before losing to Rangers in the quarter finals.

"I recall that particular season well! I was only 11 at the time and I thought Queen of the South were the best team in the world. That 5-4 replay victory against Ayr has always been my most memorable match.

"So, if we all pull together it can be done although it won't be easy! I'm not here at Palmerston 'short term', I intend being here for a two or three year stint, and I'm hoping we can all move forward together".

In search of a keeper 24th October 2006
After watching his side hammer Gretna 4-1 in a reserve match last night, Ian McCall was in brighter spirits when he spoke to the 'Website' this morning. Yet the manager did stress that his number one priority was to bring in another keeper following Saturday's disaster at St Johnstone. Said Ian, "I'm working 'round the clock' to get another keeper onboard, but I'm still hoping that Colin Scott will be fit for the Livingston game.

"We have Alan Ferguson, who I know well from my Falkirk days, training with us at present, and he'll be joining us for a session in Glasgow this afternoon. However, Alan is about three weeks away from being match-fit, so 'short term' I'm looking to bring in a keeper on a month's loan. I've a lot of 'contacts' throughout Scotland and even South of the Border, but unfortunately we're not allowed to get anyone 'on loan' from England at this time. So I'll just have to concentrate on Scotland!

"I've three or four names in mind and I'll be doing my utmost to get one in place for Saturday".

Meanwhile, on the subject of keepers, young 'Dodo' Martin was in goal for the Gretna game and, apart from a 'slip-up' for the Gretna goal, did very well.

Reserve win 23rd October 2006
Queens romped to a 4-1 victory over Gretna in their reserve league west fixture at Palmerston tonight. The visitors had two former Palmerston favourites, David Mathieson and Derek Townsley in their line-up but Queens were always in control and the performances of Steven Swift (who played fully 70 minutes) and young Mark Whorlow were gratifying for the home support.

Queens opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute when Andy Thomson was on the spot to prod home a loose ball from close range. Gretna equalised in 29 minutes when young 'keeper Darren Martin unfortunately allowed a thirty yard effort from Jim Davidson to spill through his hands into the net. But Queens hit back when Graham Weir found Mark Whorlow in the clear and he blasted home a tremendous strike from 20 yards. And only five minutes later Queens made it 3-1 when Graham Weir cut in from the right wing and clinically finished from an acute angle.

The home side kept up the pressure in the second half and a Warren Moon corner saw Jim Lauchlan head home for number 4 to end off a satisfying night.

The Queens side was Martin, Swift, Callaghan, Lauchlan, Moon, J Thomson, Henry, Weir, A Thomson, Whorlow and Gibson.

Match reaction 21st October 2006
It turned out anther dismal day for the Doonhamers at Perth this afternoon as Queen crashed to a 5-0 defeat at the hands of St Johnstone. Alas it was the same old story - no goals for, five against, no points and goalkeeping errors contributing greatly to our biggest defeat since we lost by the same margin at Falkirk four years ago. To make matters even worse skipper Jim Thomson was sent off which made it a 'nightmare all round' for the 157 die-hard Queens fans who'd made the trip north.

After the match manager Ian McCall said, "There's only so much I can take the blame for, I can't legislate for a 'keeper making three blunders which led to goals and neither can I put the ball in the net for them. For the first 25 minutes we held our own and even at 2-0 down Willie Gibson missed a great chance which would have got us back into the game. We've got two home games coming up and it's imperative we take points from them. I've got a great Board of Directors but I'm running out of time."

Another month for Andrew 20th October 2006
Andrew Barrowman signed a one month extension to his present loan contract this afternoon. This will take the Kilmarnock striker's deal at Palmerston through to November 20th. He linked well with Graham Weir last Saturday and, despite missing one gilt-edged opportunity to score, gave a good performance which impressed manager, Ian McCall.

Andrew, or Andy, as some of his team-mates call him, says he doesn't really mind what he gets but joked, "Somehow I don't think that's what the Queens' fans would be calling me when I headed that one over the bar in our last game". But he added, "I had no hesitation in signing an extension. I'm enjoying it down here and all the lads have made me feel at home. I often travel back and forward with Jim Lauchlan and Eric Paton and we have a good laugh--but not when we lose of course. The standard is quite high in the Scottish First Division, much quicker than I expected, but I'm getting sharper with every match. I'm now playing football on a regular basis, so I can't ask for better than that. If we could only get that first league win under our belt it would give us all a massive boost and that's what I'm hoping for tomorrow".

Off to Perth 19th October 2006
On Saturday Queens head north to Perth to take on joint league leaders St Johnstone. We have managed only two victories at McDiarmid Park in the past four years but how valuable a third win for us would be as we lie at the bottom of the table. Said Ian McCall, "You just need to look at their home record to see the task that we have ahead of us. St Johnstone are a Premier League side in all but league status only and I consider them favourites to go up this season. If they do gain promotion then I'd be pleased for my old buddie, Owen Coyle, who has worked so hard to get them where they are".

But Ian stressed, "The 'old pals act' will certainly be put on temporary hold the minute we walk out of the tunnel at McDiarmid Park on Saturday. Like me, Owen hates to lose at anything. In the old days he used to 'lose the heid' when I beat him at head tennis--and I always did!

"Seriously though, we must try and take something from the game and even a draw wouldn't be a bad result knowing we've got two home games to follow. However, three points would be a real bonus!"

Nevertheless, St Johnstone manager, Owen Coyle, insisted, "Although we're up there at the top and Queens are fighting for survival we're not underestimating them in any way and I'm expecting a tough game. As I've said so often in the past, any team in this division can beat any other and that's been proved so often in recent years. It's the most competitive league in Scotland! But we've an excellent home record--unbeaten in the league this season and losing only once here last season. So we aim to keep it that way. "Yet I have a healthy respect for Queen of the South as I feel they are a much better side that their lowly league placing belies and they've a lot of good experienced players who I have played alongside. We managed a 1-0 win at Palmerston earlier in the season but we had to fight hard for it.

"In fact I'll always have a healthy respect for any team that Ian McCall manages, we've been good friends for years and he certainly knows how to motivate a side. But we both like to win whether it be at football, subuteo or tiddlywinks so they'll be a bit of rivalry there on Saturday. However, irrespective of how it goes we'll have a cup of tea before the game and, if we're still speaking, a beer after it. But, in between, they'll be no quarter asked and none given".

Bill Goldie
An incentive for Willie 18th October 2006
Although the home support was down to just over 1100 on Saturday, Ian McCall still praised the 'die-hards' for sticking behind the team. The manager singled out Willie Gibson for special praise and said, "Willie can be so unpredictable but on his game can be brilliant, and some of his deliveries were great against Partick. With our new formation he's playing further up the field now and appears to be enjoying it. He's a bit like I was at his age, a creative player but with a mind of his own. There's no denying the lad's got talent but he must be more consistent, and we've had a few 'bust-ups' over that!

"As an incentive I offered him a cash bonus a fortnight ago (which I'm paying out of my own pocket) to play four consecutive consistent matches. He's had two good games already so the next one's at Perth. If he does well there I'll be the judge for the final match. But one thing's for sure, he'll have to have one heck of a good game for I'll not part with my money easily".

Manager still positive 17th October 2006
Just prior to leaving to take in a Premier Reserve game and then supervise an evening training session in Glasgow, Ian McCall took time off to reflect more on Saturday's match. The manager was still bemoaning bad luck and missed chances but added, "I'm not dwelling on the subject too long for I've already mentioned how frustrated I felt. But I would like to point out that I was encouraged with how we performed in our last two outings and we could have won both had luck been with us.

"On Saturday we missed four great chances which, on another day, might have gone in but the players didn't mean to miss them so it's no good me going ballistic about it. Dick Campbell knew full well that 'we were robbed' and I bet the old rogue would be laughing all the way home from Palmerston to Partick. But we must get results now--good performances are not enough!

"Nevertheless, I do believe we can still 'turn the tables'. If we play like we did against Partick and Hamilton results will come. But we must remain positive and if we could take a point at St Johnstone on Saturday I'm confident we can pick up six out of six by beating Livingston and Ross County at Palmerston in the next two games.

"What we mustn't do is allow ourselves to be 'cut adrift' at the bottom. We can't let the gap between ourselves and Airdrie and Ross County increase or we're in big trouble as neither Brechin or Stranraer are there now. We're the only part time side. We'll have to get back into the 'dog fight' for 8th place and if I can manage that this season it will be the best achievement of my entire career".

Show racism the red card 16th October 2006
Management and players at Queen of the South joined forces this week to 'Show Racism the Red Card'. Young and old were united in their condemnation of any form of racism and spoke out very strongly against it.

Said Chairman David Rae, "Here at Palmerston we are dead against all kinds of racism irrespective of cult or creed. After all 'we're all Jock Thamson's bairns'. I would personally back any campaign to stamp it out completely and I'd like to see Scottish football set an example to the whole nation".

Manager Ian McCall stated, "I've witnessed racism at close quarters at both Falkirk and Rangers with former team-mates, Richard Cadette and Mark Walters involved. It's not nice and there's no place for it in football at all, or in any sport in fact".

Added skipper Jim Thomson, "I have a lot of good friends who are a different nationality but it makes no difference to me at all. What happened at the recent Gretna v Airdrie game when some fans donned white hoods was a disgrace to Scottish football. I've no time for racism--it should be kicked into touch".

Sean O'Connor was also against it and said, "Fortunately I've never experienced racism despite living near Wolverhampton for some years, and even being English and playing in Scottish football. But I totally agree that there's no place for it in football and it must be eradicated".

And young James Baty had the final say and emphasised, "I don't think racism should have anything to do with football--after all it's just 11 players playing against another 11 players. I'm only 17 but I'd gladly show it the red card any day".

Coaching classes commence 15th October 2006
Queen of the South could not have wished for a better day to start off their coaching classes at King George V. Over 90 youngsters from six local primary schools turned up for an enjoyable morning and the sessions took place in brilliant sunshine. The six schools involved for this first programme were: Lochside, St Ninians, Laurieknowe, Holywood, Locharbriggs and Troqueer.

In charge of proceedings were Ross Corbett (Travel Club President) and Gordon Hyslop (Head of Youth Development at Palmerston) and Gordon was assisted in the workouts by Youth Coaches, Alan Murray and Scott Solley along with six young players from the club's Under-17 squad.

Chairman David Rae and Manager Ian McCall turned up to witness proceedings and both agreed it was an excellent turnout considering the school holidies were in progress. Also in attendance was David Linden of the Supporters' Trust who sponsored the special tee-shirts

The coaching initiative is held in conjunction with the Dumfries Galloway Council's 'Active Schools Programme' and will be held every Saturday that Queens have a home game, All those who attended received a free ticket for the Queen of the South v Partick Thistle match in the afternoon.

Match reaction 14th October 2006
Another dismal day for Queens fans who saw their team go down 2-0 to Partick Thistle which leaves us goal-less at Palmerston in the league after 360 minutes of football this season. The worrying factor is that we are now five points adrift at the bottom of the table following Airdrie United's win over Clyde and it's now going to take another amazing fight back for survival. However Queens cannot be faulted for lack of fight and could well have scored a barrow load of goals had luck been with us and we were the better side on the day. On the other hand lapses of concentration in defence gave Partick two half chances and they converted both of them. It's a funny old game football!

Afterwards Ian McCall summed it up in one sentence when he told the press after the game, "Your guys could have scored with some of the chances we missed this afternoon, Dick Campbell came into my office beaming like a Cheshire Cat for he knew full well that he had 'stolen the points'. We had four clear cut chances with headers - three missed the target then big Sean hit the woodwork with another. We just couldn't get the ball in the net! Any neutral watching today's game would never have guessed what team was top of the league and what team was bottom. I thought we played some really good stuff out there and we also did well at Hamilton - it was nothing like that disastrous Clyde scenario. But it's now important we get the first league win and quickly. Believe it or not the confidence and spirit is still high in the dressing room but it could all change if we don't get some points on the board soon.

We pulled off a great escape last season but we can't expect to do that all the time. Luck's certainly not going for us at the moment but I still think it will turn.

A word from Robbie 12th October 2006
Congratulations to Robbie Neilson who gained his first full cap for Scotland against Ukraine on Wednesday night. Despite the result Robbie thoroughly enjoyed the experienced and took 'time out' to speak to the 'Website' this afternoon. Said Robbie, "After 'sitting it out' for the France game it was tremendous to start against the Ukraine. It's another 'step up the ladder' for me and it was great to be part of it all. I enjoyed the experience of training with the Scotland squad all week--we all got on so well together and there no big egos. We didn't have much chance to celebrate too much after our win over France. We got home to see our families after the game then flew out to the Ukraine on Monday morning. I got the feeling that not too many of the players enjoyed playing under Berti Vogts, but it's all changed now since Walter Smith and his team took over".

Robbie in his Queens days
On the match in Kiev Robbie admitted, "Obviously I was disappointed to concede the penalty, although I felt the decision a bit dubious, but at the time I was marking one of the best players in the world, Shevchenko. However, I'll learn from experience, but to be honest we were one down at the time and playing with 10 men, so we did have our 'backs to the wall'. When I was a boy, like all youngsters, I dreamed of playing for Scotland some day--so it was a 'dream come true' walking out onto that huge stadium in Kiev in the blue of Scotland.

"It was also great to have four Hearts players on for the start but, unfortunately only two finished. Steven Pressley, our captain, was sent off and I was substituted in the closing minutes. But it was good for Hearts as well, and with a lot of promising young lads progressing through the ranks at Tynecastle at the moment, it augurs well for the future".

But modest as ever, Robbie was quick to ask about the players he remembers from his time at Palmerston and added, "There's not so many left now! I notice Jimmy Thomson is still going strong and he's a dad now. Colin Scott's still there and so too is Eric Paton. Eric stays just down the road from me in Cumbernauld and I often 'bump into him' in Tesco's.

"I see John O'Neill's still around and knocking in the goals as usual, and big Sean O'Connor's back as well. However, I was sorry to hear about Andy Aitken's injury. It's his cruciate, the dread of every footballer, so if you read this Andy, I hope it's not too long till you're back in the team.

"I'm pleased to see that 'Weirdo', (that's what we called him at Tynecastle) has returned to action after fracturing his cheekbone. I believe he's wearing some sort of mask at present--it's bound to improve your looks 'wee man'.

"Please pass on my regards to the players I've just mentioned and also to all the Queens' fans. They were so supportive during my four months at Palmerston--and I've never forgotten that. The Queens' result is always one of the first I look out for when the scores come through on a Saturday and from time to time I log onto the Queens' Website to see what's happening down in Dumfries. I'm 'keeping my fingers crossed' that you'll pull away from the foot of the table and stay in the First Division--you did it last season and I'm sure you'll do it again".

Good luck to you all! Robbie.

Team News 12th October 2006
Queens welcome back Graham Weir and Eric Paton to the squad for the visit of Partick Thistle on Saturday. Weir has been sidelined for six weeks after fracturing his cheekbone in the local derby against Gretna and is now wearing a transparent plastic mask for protection until the injury is fully healed. 'Weiro' did play for an hour in the Reserve fixture against Morton on Monday night and actually scored the second goal in the 3-0 victory.

Eric Paton has also been missing for a week or so with stomach problems, but a course of iron tablets has greatly improved his blood level and he's itching to play again. Said Eric, "I was losing blood which made me anaemic and very tired and couldn't last much more than an hour on the park. But the tablets have helped and I played in both the friendly against Annan Athletic on Saturday and the reserve game with Morton. I felt no ill effects and I'm raring to go".

Warren Moon is also added to the squad and is expected to feature.

On the downside Murray Henderson reckons he'll be out for another two or three weeks with his ankle injury and when Stephen Swift was asked 'when he'll be back' he shrugged his shoulders in disappointment and replied, "You tell me".

Also missing on Saturday will be central defender, Jim Lauchlan. His penalty points have taken him over the mark and he'll have to 'sit it out' with a one match suspension.

Home wins a must 12th October 2006
Ian McCall admitted this afternoon that Queens' home form must improve if we hope to move up the table. Said the manager, "Three of our next four games are at home and we must start winning our matches at Palmerston. We did well at home in the latter part of last season and went on a good run of victories, so I'm hoping Saturday will be the start of another of those runs. Partick will bring a big support with them and they're a noisy lot, but no team has a noisier support than Queen of the South when they get going and I'm hoping they'll drown out the Thistle fans.

"Although we didn't have an official match last weekend we did play two games--a friendly against Annan Athletic and a Reserve fixture with Morton. And, despite the fact the Morton match was just a Reserve one, I must say that the first half was as good as I've seen the lads play this season. They passed the ball about well, scored three goals, and that pleased me.

"We're gradually getting bodies back now--thank goodness! Jim Lauchlan is suspended for Saturday but Eric Paton and Graham Weir will make a welcome return to the squad. Neither of them have featured lately due to illness and injury, but both played in the two weekend games--and played very well indeed.' Weiro' has been sorely missed up front and I still think he could play at a higher level. Although he's not a 25 goal a season man he's capable of knocking in 10 to 12 and that would do me fine.

"If all goes well Warren Moon could feature at some stage. He scored another glorious goal on Monday night and he can certainly hit them".

More on our new venture 11th October 2006
Queens are about to embark on an exciting new venture. As mentioned a couple of days ago on the 'Website', one part of the project is the coaching classes at King George V complex which commence this coming Saturday and the other is visitations to local schools. The latter will be supervised by club captain, Jim Thomson, who has made over 250 first team appearances in a Queens' jersey. On these visits he will be joined by other Queens' favourites such as Sean O'Connor, Paul Burns, Lewis Sloan and Scott Robertson.

Over the years J.T. has been a great ambassador for the club--never backward at coming forward to help, and with him just becoming a dad himself, he is the ideal candidate for the job. Said Jim, "I'm looking forward to the challenge! I've always enjoyed meeting Queens' fans, both young and old, and having a wee chat with them. We'll be visiting as many schools as possible and discussing things like coaching, physical activity levels, soccer skills and how much a healthy diet can help young footballers.

"Last week was 'Autumn Walk to School Week' and we visited quite a few schools over the five days. We're on a short break at present for the school holidays but we'll be starting the visits in earnest when the hols are over. It will be very interesting and enjoyable work".

The entire project is linked with the Dumfries and Galloway Council's Leisure and Sport section and speaking to the 'Website' earlier this week Lee Seton (the Active Schools Manager) stated, "We're delighted to be involved with Queen of the South in this new initiative. It's all part of the 'Active Schools' Programme' to increase awareness in physical activity levels and to encourage healthy living and healthy eating among pupils. My team of Primary School Co-ordinators will be linking with one of Queens' best known players, Jim Thomson, and assisting him in every way.

"To begin with we'll target the area closest to Palmerston, North West Dumfries, which includes Maxwelltown High School and several primaries. Then, if all goes well we'll take in the rest of the town itself and gradually work further afield to encompass the whole of Nithsdale, the Stewartry, Annandale and even into parts of Eskdale. The initial stage will take us through to the end of the football season in May and then, hopefully, we'd re-start again after the school holidays are over".

Lee then added, "I've known Jim Thomson for quite a while and I think he'll be an excellent organiser who will be talking to the pupils about coaching, how to keep active and leading football skill sessions. When I played football myself with St Cuthbert Wanderers I found myself up against Jim several times. We used to 'kick lumps out of each other" he joked, "But there's no hard feelings".

Queens in easy street 9th October 2006
Queens coasted to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Morton in their reserve league fixture tonight. The first half saw them play some of the best football seen at Palmerston this season, scoring three into the bargain. Jim Thomson of all people netted the first in ten minutes prodding home from close range; Graham Weir saw a deflected shot beat the 'keeper for number two in the 27th minute, but the goal of the game was a cracker from Warren Moon five minutes before the interval.

Queens line up was, Scott, Paton, Thomson, Mackenzie, Lauchlan, Gibson, Moon, Robertson, Henry, O'Connor and Weir. Captain of the Morton side was ex-Queens favourite Peter Weatherson.

Ian McCall said that he was, "very happy, it was an excellent performance".

New project for Queens 9th October 2006
Queen of the South, in conjunction with Dumfries and Galloway Council's 'Active Schools Programme', kick-off a new project at King George V complex this Saturday. It will involve coaching local school children from Primary 5, 6 and 7 under the jurisdiction of Queen of the South youth coaches.

Those in control of this new initiative are Head of Youth Development at Palmerston, Gordon Hyslop and Travel Club President, Ross Corbett. Speaking to the 'Website' Ross stressed, "It is important this is properly organised from the start. The parents of every child involved will be notified and a necessary registration form filled in giving permission for their children to take part. Initially we'll be targeting schools in the North West area of Dumfries such as Lincluden, Lochside, St Teresa's, Laurieknowe and Troqueer etc.and then spreading the net further. But the last thing we want is for the classes to be oversubscribed.

"The sessions will be held between 10.00 and 11.30 am every Saturday Queens have a home game at Palmerston and all those involved will receive a free ticket for the Queens' match in the afternoon. The Supporters Trust will also be sponsoring tee-shirts for those who take part and all concerned with the project are really looking forward to the challenge ahead".

Added Chairman, David Rae, "Queen of the South Football Club have always enjoyed a good working relationship with Dumfries and Galloway Council Leisure and Sport section and the' Active Schools' Programme' is all part of it. We have already had meetings and talks with their representatives, Lee Seton (Active Schools' Manager) and Andy McLean (Primary Schools' Co-ordinator) about the coaching classes. They will be running in conjunction with school visitations by Jim Thomson, our club captain, and he will be joined on these visits by other Queens' players to talk about coaching, physical levels and healthy eating plus other things young ambitious footballers should know about--and these visits have already started. All our coaching will be done locally as we are very much a Community Club and we appreciate that those youngsters involved could turn out to be the footballers and supporters of the future. More news about all this will appear on the 'Website' later this week".

Man in the mask 7th October 2006
Who's the man with the mask? No prizes for guessing--yes, it's Graham Weir! 'Weiro' tried out his new protective face mask for the first time in today's 'closed doors' friendly against Annan Athletic when he came on as sub and deemed it a big success. However, he admits he's been getting 'pelters' from his team mates and added, "They've been calling me Phantom of the Opera, Zorro, Edgar Davids the Dutch internationalist and all sorts. I've even been likened to Dennis Taylor the snooker player". Graham has just bought a new house in his home town of Harthill and is hoping to move in shortly with his girlfriend, Lesley. Joked 'Weiro', "Lesley says it's a big improvement and I look better with the mask on than off. I hope she's just 'winding me up'. But I've got to agree myself it's better than my face looked when I first got the injury. It was an awful mess then.

"I believe 'Gazza' had a mask made when he suffered a similar injury so, if it's good enough for him then it's good enough for me. If it helps me get back playing sooner then I'll be only too glad to take all the taunts in the dressing room. You never know it might bring me luck!".

The mask itself is transparent and more like goggles, but its purpose is to protect the cheekbone until it is fully healed.

Queens draw with Annan 7th October 2006
Queens met Annan Athletic at Palmerston today in a training match which resulted in a 2-2 draw. Sean O'Connor opened the scoring for Queens after 20 minutes but Graeme Bell headed home a fine equaliser in 35 minutes before big Sean netted a second just before the break. Mid-way through the second half McMenamin snatched a second goal for the visitors to make it honours even.

Don't forget, Queens meet Morton at Palmerston on Monday night in a Reserve League fixture. Kick-off is at 7.30 pm.

Weiro to get his mask 6th October 2006
Graham Weir was due to take delivery of his protective face mask today. The striker fractured his cheekbone in the local derby clash against Gretna five weeks ago and the mask will enable him to get back in action a lot quicker than was first thought. 'Weiro' hopes to try it out for the first time in tomorrow's training match against Annan Athletic at Palmerston.

The manager's confident 5th October 2006
Said Ian McCall this afternoon, "The spirit in the dressing room is fabulous at present and nobody would ever guess we're at the foot of the table. The display at New Douglas Park on Saturday gave us all a boost and with a little bit of luck we could have taken all three points. And I don't think even Hamilton would have grudged us them. As I say, spirits are high and we're all confident we can turn things around if we can maintain this positive frame of mind and get that first league win under our belts. We did it last season and we can do it again!"

Added the manager, "Although we've no official game this weekend we're playing Annan Athletic at Palmerston in a 'closed doors' training match on Saturday morning. Our side will consist of local players and youngsters, while the remainder of the squad will train in Glasgow. Despite the break in fixtures, training has continued as per normal. We all had a session at Palmerston on Monday night; some of the lads trained at the complex in Milngavie on Tuesday afternoon and, with a game on Saturday, we'll be training at King George V tonight.

"On Monday night we meet Morton at home in the Reserve League and spectators are welcome for this one. So no one can ever accuse us of lacking in fitness".

Hope springs eternal 5th October 2006
Despite lying bottom of the table all connected with Palmerston are convinced Queens can turn the corner and remain in the First Division for a sixth consecutive season. Twice in recent years we have been down 'early doors' yet fought back. Only last season we had three points at this stage and survived, and in 2002-03 (our first year up) we had five points and made a remarkable recovery to end up fifth.

As a matter of interest here are our statistics after eight games since we won promotion:

Season P W D L Pts
2002-03 8 1 2 5 5
2003-04 8 5 1 2 16
2004-05 8 4 1 3 13
2005-06 8 0 3 5 3
2006-07 8 0 2 6 2

At present we're only two points behind Airdrie and four behind Ross County and that's not an unsurmountable hurdle by any means considering there are 28 games still to go.

Queens meet Annan 5th October 2006
Although Scotland play France at Hampden on Saturday, Queens have arranged a friendly match (behind closed doors) against Annan Athletic at Palmerston. Kick-off is at 10.45 a.m. to allow players and officials plenty of time to be home in time for the international which starts at 5 p.m. Annan had an excellent result on Saturday when they won away from home in the Scottish Qualifying Cup, beating last year's 'giant killers', Spartans 1-0--the shock of the round.

Match reaction 30th September 2006
A point won or two points dropped? take it whatever way you like! A draw at New Douglas Park is never to be scoffed at but considering the homesters played the last half hour with only ten men the visiting support of 297 were perhaps looking for more than just the 1-1 score line. But it was a nerve racking match packed with action and a big improvement on last Saturday's diabolical display. It's not often that Queens fans are rooting for a Gretna victory but on this occasion they would be sorry to see Airdrie United pick up maximum points at Raydale which now leaves us two points adrift at the bottom.

Said Ian McCall afterwards, "I was proud of my players this afternoon and after last week's performance they certainly 'won their spurs back'. They came in for a great deal of criticism last week and although we didn't win today they played their hearts out for Queen of the South and Dumfries. And the fans were great as well! I can't fault the players and the only thing we didn't get was that first elusive league win, we out played Hamilton for long spells - we hit the bar, hit the post and another effort actually hit the goal line and bounced over the bar. Even their manager Billy Reid admitted they 'got out of jail'. We've only played eight games and although we're two points adrift there's a long, long way to go. Three of our next four games are at Palmerston and I fully realise that we must put points on the board in these games. However I'm still confident that there will be three or four teams in a pack at the bottom and I'm looking for Queen of the South to be top of that pack. We'll battle all the way for I'm here for the 'long haul', I've no intention of 'jumping ship'.
