A sad farewell 29th April 2008
We were all sorry to hear of the death of one of our oldest supporters, Andy Frazer from Dalbeattie. According to his daughter, Anne, he passed away peacefully last night and it was so sad that he'll miss the Cup Final--a match he'd been so looking forward to. Andy was 91 and due to visit one of his oldest friends, Sam Campbell, to celebrate his 93rd birthday next week.

Match reaction 26th April 2008
It was never going to be easy for Queens at East End Park this afternoon with players obviously fearing red cards and injuries and also there biggest match ever coming up at Hampden in a months time. It was a low key first half but Queens were the more dominant and had more of the territorial advantage. Three goals from Dunfermline early in the second period ended the game a s a contest and a fourth late on finished the rout. However a result like this was always on the cards but irrespective of this our fans, as usual, were all dressed up for the final match with sixteen Davie Rae's on show. They were in good voice to the bitter end but can still look back on a memorable season.

Gordon Chisholm, understandably wasn't too pleased with the result and said, "We played some good stuff in the first half and created three or four decent chances but didn't stick any of them away. I was very disappointed at the way we lost the goals as we haven't done that for quite a while. Once they scored the heads went down and it was then just a matter of how many. We lacked commitment in the second half and I'm not happy at that. However that's the league season over and we've finished in fourth place. We'll go out to Marbella for a few days next week, we'll relax and do some light training and return refreshed."

Fans Forums 25th April 2008
A number of questions have been raised with regard to the Club's decision to remove links to internet fans forums from this web-site.

The Club recognises that football is about opinions and encourages healthy debate about all aspects of the game. However, increasingly, a number of defamatory and derogatory remarks made about club volunteers and supporters have been brought to the attention of the Board of Directors.

Queen of the South Football Club cannot and will not be associated with or endorse such remarks, which appear to be being made by a handful of individuals. As such, and with immediate effect, following a Board Meeting this week the Club has removed any association with these forums.

It is appreciated that moderators work diligently to remove the majority of offensive postings from these sites, however they cannot cover this vital task over a 24 hour period.

We would encourage all supporters to adopt a sporting attitude and focus positively on the game. Enjoy our recent successes, by all means criticise, but please refrain from personal and abusive attacks on your fellow supporters.

FOOTBALLERS LIVES 25th April 2008
Don't mention season 2007-08 to Neil Scally. Even though Queens have had one of the best seasons in the club's history--finishing fourth in Division One and reaching the final of the Scottish Cup--it's been a 'nightmare' for 'Scal'. It all happened with what appeared an innocent sliding tackle at East End Park on 22nd December! But his studs caught in the turf and he ended up in plaster and on crutches. He suffered a broken fibia, a dislocated ankle and had a 3 inch plate inserted in his leg. Not the best of Christmas presents! 'Scal' was to miss the rest of the season after having made only 19 appearances. For the 'fans favourite' who had racked up seven 'Player of the Season' awards the year previous, it turned out to be one he will want to forget. However, he's now back in training and will, no doubt, be at Hampden shouting the lads on to an even bigger success.

Scals enjoys a goal celebration

What's been your most exciting moment in your professional football career. And also the biggest match you've played in?
Winning a cup and league 'double' while at Falkirk. Even though it was only the Challenge Cup they all count. My biggest game was at Ayr United when we beat Hibs 2-1 in the semi-final of the CIS Cup and set us up for a final against Rangers.

What's been your most embarrasing moment in football?
There's nothing I can really think about, but being seen out and about with Eric Paton doesn't do my image much good.

Who do you rate the best player at Queen of the South at present?

It has to be 'Dobbs'. His finishing is clinical and first-class.
If you could play for any club in the world who would it be?
Manchester United. For me they're the best ever. I'd love to be in a starting line-up with the likes of Ronaldo. Rooney and Giggs.

What's your favourite film or video?
Gladiator with Russell Crowe.

Your favourite food and drink?
Spaghetti Bolognese and Irn Bru--I drink gallons of it. I'd never had an alcoholic drink for ages but did have that Saturday night after we beat Aberdeen to get into the Scottish Cup Final.

And the favourite item in your wardrobe?
A black diesel jacket. Everyone says I look really sexy in it.

If you had the chance to spend a week on your own, anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Hugh Heffner's Playboy Mansion in the good old U.S.A.

If you had to choose a famous female celebrity to have dinner with, who would it be?
The model Giselle, she's 'drop-dead' gorgeous. I heard on the grapevine that she really likes me.

Do you ever log-on to the official QOS Website and, if so, what do you think of it?
I'm not really into computers. I tend to steer clear of them if I can.

Next Friday our featured player is John Stewart.

Still a faint hope 24th April 2008
Queens have still an outside chance of finishing third in the league table. With St Johnstone losing 3-1 at Stirling last night we could still pip them but it would mean Saints losing by three clear goals at home to Livingston and Queens winning by the same margin at Dunfermline (or by a similar six goal swing). But stranger things have happened!.

Team News: The manager intends 'resting' three players who are close to suspension for Saturday's match at East End Park--Andy Aitken, Ryan McCann and Bob Harris. So they'll be a different line-up on show.

More boots up for auction 23rd April 2008
Following Stephen Dobbie's generous gift of his 'hat-trick' boots to auction off for the 'Molly's Wish' campaign, Ryan McCann has now come forward and indicated that he too would like to help. Ryan has agreed to send down the boots from the Dundee cup-tie including the famous right one which launched his 84 yard wonder goal for the 'New Bazaar Doonhamers' to auction for this worthy cause as well. Well done to both of you!

Our League Finale 22nd April 2008
Although we've still the Scottish Cup Final to play our league season ends at Dunfermline on Saturday. And what a memorable season it's been! Said Gordon Chisholm. "It's our last league game and I'd like to finish on a high. Dunfermline are the only side in the division we haven't managed to beat this season, so that in itself is an added incentive. Since we last visited East End Park we've lost only thrice in 22 outings and that takes some doing in this league.

"But all-in-all it's been a fantastic season for everyone connected to Queen of the South with so many plus points. We're into the Scottish Cup Final, we're into Europe and have finished in a creditable fourth spot in the table. And who would ever have envisaged that back in November. The boys have worked really hard and have been great, so they deserve all the praise that's going.

"I'll be making some changes for Saturday as I want to give as many players as possible a taste of action before we leave for our break in Spain next week.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all our fans for the tremendous support you've given us and speaking on behalf of all the players and back-room staff it was really appreciated. I enjoyed my night out at the 'Player of the Year' awards and I think you made a good choice when it came to the winners".

European Travel 21st April 2008
I am very hopeful that the club will be able to offer packages including tickets, travel and accomodation for our UEFA cup games next season.

Obviously this may be subject to change, dependant on the draw process - but I thought it might be pertinent to inform all our fans at this early stage, that the club will do their utmost to coordinate our support to see Queens play in Europe affordably.

Have a great summer break.

Cup Final at Palmerston 21st April 2008
There is a Youth Cup Final to be played between Lochar Thistle U17s and Heston Rovers U17s this Wednesday night at 7PM at Palmerston Park. The organisers are hoping for a decent crowd of over 100. It will be the main stand that is open, maybe a few locals would be interested in coming to see the two teams from Dumfries battle it out. Lochar Thistle beat Greystone Rovers 1-0 in their semi final and Heston Rovers defeated Annan Athletic 3-2 in the other semi-final.
Saint Stephen 20th April 2008
A most generous gesture by Stephen Dobbie at the New Bazaar quiz and social night. After receiving the coveted 'Golden Rattle' to hold for being voted 'Player of the Year' he returned his £50 pound prize money and requested it be put towards the 'Molly's Wish' charity fund. And, not only that, 'Dobbs' dug deep in his pocket and produced another £50 of his own to up the total to £100. Nice one Stephen!.

Our 'super striker' has also donated those famous boots he wore when he grabbed that 'perfect hat-trick' up at Cappielow and asked that they be autioned off and the sum received to be added to the 'Molly's Wish' fund as well.

Although he was at the New Bazaar function he had then to dash up the road for a Wedding Reception and regretably missed the Travel Club awards later that night.

It's Rangers in the Final! 20th April 2008
Davie Rae got the final he so much prayed for--Queen of the South v Glasgow Rangers. But what a nail-biting end it must have been for him with Rangers just scrapping through 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out. It wasn't the classic our tie against Aberdeen was, but it's 'worth it's weight in gold' and, amazingly takes us into Europe. None of us would ever have imagined anything like that when we were travelling back down the road after losing 1-0 to East Fife in the opening round of the CIS Cup back in August.

Said a delighted David Rae, "It's absolutely fantastic. St Johnstone did well and ran them close but I always felt when it went to a penalty 'shoot-out' Rangers would have the edge with their experience and professionism. And, that's exactly what I said to our manager last night!.

"But you never know in football. We'll be massive underdogs--but underdogs have won before and they can win again. It all depends on how we perform on the day!. I'm sure it will be a 'full-house' at Hampden for the final as we'll take a good few thousand more than we did to the semi-final. No matter what the score it will be a historic day for us all--so let's enjoy it".

Queens recorded their fourth win of the season against Dundee today and the three points ensured us fourth spot in the table and our highest points ever total in the first division since we gained promotion. And with still a game to play!. Speaking after the match Gordon Chisholm said;

"Over the past few months fourth place was always our target and we've made it. We would have liked to have caught St Johnstone but left it too late. It was very blustery out there this afternoon but considering the conditions it was a good performance and I was happy at the way the lads played. Dundee had to go for it but after we scored I didn't think the result was ever in doubt. Our start to the season was a hard one but we came good once we got a lot of our players back. There was a good crowd of over 3,000, our highest of the season for a league game, and it rounded the season off on a high note. I'm told it's the highest ever points we've finished with in the 1st Division."

FOOTBALLERS LIVES 18th April 2008
Jim Lauchan joined Queens in July 2006 and has made 47 first team appearances. Last season he was a regular in the starting line-up turning out 40 times but in late September he suffered a groin injury which saw him sidelined for over four months. A player of vast experience the likeable Glasweigian has played for six clubs in a career spanning 15 years and is well respected by his fellow professionals. Jim was only 16 when he made his first-team debut for Kilmarnock and from Rugby Park he moved on to Barnsley, Dundee United, Livingston and Ross County before Ian McCall brought him to Palmerston.

Back in the centre - Jim makes his return against Partick in midweek

What's been your most exciting moment in your professional football career. And also the biggest match you've played in?
My debut for Killie in the SPL. I was only 16 and it was a dream come true even though we lost 3-1. My whole family was there to see me play and I was really buzzing. The biggest match I played in was at Dundee United. Relegation was on the cards that season and at one stage we trailed by 12 points. However we clawed ourselves back then recovered from two down to beat St Johnstone in the second last game of the season to stay in the SPL.

What's been your most embarrasing moment in football?
Getting 'nutmegged' about every day at training by that man Dobbie. One day I might get my own back and 'nutmeg' him.

Who do you rate the best player at Queen of the South at present?
Despite what I've just said about him it's got to be 'Dobbs'. I've played with Ally McCoist and he could be every bit as good as 'Coisty' if he worked that wee bit harder on some aspects of his game. I honestly feel the 'sky's the limit' for Stephen.
If you could play for any club in the world who would it be?
Without a doubt--Glasgow Celtic. I've got green blood flowing through my veins.

What's your favourite film or video?
Heat. Starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.

Your favourite food and drink?
An easy one this. A 'Subway' sandwich and a 'Subway' drink. I have a 'Subway' franchise on Shettleston Road and my wife and I have two other outlets in the pipeline. It's hard work but rewarding and at my age you've got to consider other options outside football.

And the favourite item in your wardrobe?
On a night out with my wife and friends I have a nice black Gucci suit I like to wear. It's tried and tested and even the wife says I look good in it.

If you had the chance to spend a week on your own, anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I'm the best poker player at Palmerston by a mile. I really love poker so it would be Vegas to play in the World Series.

If you had to choose a famous female celebrity to have dinner with, who would it be?
Eva Mendes. She gets a straight 10 for her looks.

Do you ever log-on to the official QOS Website and, if so, what do you think of it?
I like it a lot. It's really good. I enjoy reading the build-up to games and it's also fun to see what the players and fans are all saying.

Next Friday our featured player is Neil Scally.

Some fun in the Sun 17th April 2008
As a reward for reaching the Scottish Cup Final the Queens' players will enjoy a week in sunny Spain after the league season ends next Saturday. Said the manager, "They've all worked so hard to get to where we are! It will be a good 'bonding session' and will set us up for the big day on the 24th May. It will be a lighthearted and relaxed break and they all deserve it.

"But we'll need games between then and the Cup Final to keep match-fit and I have been heartened by the managers who have come forward and offered help with a friendly game. It may not be their full team they put out but Hearts for one have agreed a match".

"Although Saturday's match with Dundee is a big game for Queens it's an even bigger one for the Dens Park club" insists Gordon Chisholm. "We want a win to retain fourth spot and also to keep our great unbeaten run of 11 games intact to the end of the season.

"But for Dundee it's 'now or never'. It's so crucial, and they must get three points to remain in the promotion race with Hamilton. So there's a great deal more pressure on them than us.They're a good side, but we don't fear them and have beaten Dundee three times already this season. And who can ever forget that memorable cup-tie last month.

"All-in-all it's been a massive week for us. Ever since the build-up for the semi-final it's been an emotional 'roller-coaster ride' and after Saturday the Partick match was naturally an anti-climax. But we did well to win 2-0! We weren't too hot in the first half but after the interval some fresh legs were introduced and we picked up the pace. I don't think we let anybody down".

Team News: Paul Burns will be back in the squad having served his two match suspension. However, Andy Aitken and a couple of others have knocks and will be assessed prior to kick-off.

Bill Goldie
Match reaction 16th April 2008
While nothing could ever match Saturday's semi-final epic, Queens gave a professional performance for a 2-0 victory with goals from cup hero John Stewart and Bob Harris. Thistle manager, Ian McCall, complained about both goals but his protests fell on 'deaf ears' and were ignored by the ref.

The 'Jags' were the last team to beat us at Palmerston back in early December but since then we've managed 10 home matches unbeaten. Changes to our Saturday line-up were: Grindley in goal for MacDonald, Reid on for the suspended Burns and Lauchlan replacing Aitken.

Manger Gordon Chisholm was serving the first of a two match touchline ban but said at full time."I rested one or two players tonight but still got the right result. I was pleased to collect all three points as we'd never beaten Thistle this season. I expected a bit of a 'hangover' after Saturday and tiredness and mental fatigue was obvious in the first half.

At half-time I told them to go out there a give it a go. They responded well and gave that extra 10% and that's us back into fourth spot again".

Ian McCall however was not happy and stressed, "Neither goal should have stood. Over the 90 minutes I felt it was an even game. But good luck to Queens in the Cup Final".

Radiohead 'Blacko' 16th April 2008
Good to see one of our 'unsung heroes' of Palmerston getting into the limelight. Ian Black (better known to us all as 'Blacko') was asked to link up with BBC Radio Merseyside for their weekly 'Football Show' this week. Apart from being Club Historian he has the added and important job of 'kit-man' which keeps him busy.

The subjects in question were--how the name Queen of the South came about and how they were the 'Only Team in the Bible' which he explained in detail. Also on the same show was 'Liverpool Legend', Tommy Smith. So fame at last big man--you deserve it!.

Another change of date 15th April 2008
The success of Queen of the South, who reached the Scottish Cup Final on Saturday, has brought its own problems for the organisers of Andy Aitken's Testimonial Dinner schduled for Saturday, 17th May. It has had to be postponed for a second time due to the finacial restraints it would have imposed on supporters.

Said a spokesman for the committee, "The disposable income factor played a major part in the decision. Our fans have just come off the back of a semi-final and the date of the proposed Dinner would have come only a week before the Scottish Cup Final. The management of Easterbrook Hall have been very understanding and we thank them for their co-operation. It will now be held on a later date (still to be arranged) but all tickets already purchased will be transferrable.

Although we've yet to beat Partick Thistle this season we're all hoping that it will be fourth time lucky. And Ian McCall was quick to admit that his side have been a bit fortunate to pick up two wins and a draw. Said the exiled 'Doonhamer', "In our last meeting big Jimmy Thomson was sent off for nothing more than a typical JT challenge. But there were no malice intended and merited no more than a yellow card. Even in early season when we won 2-0 at Firhill it could well have been 2-0 the other way.

"Looking back I noticed that Queens hadn't lost at Palmerston since early December and, believe it or not it was us who beat them 2-1 that day. But that's an incredible run and it will be hard for us tomorrow night. Queens also have the advantage of coming off a cup win while we're on the back of a cup defeat. But we've still got fourth place to play for so I'm expecting another battle and considering I had only five signed players when I took over in the summer, we've come on in leaps and bounds.

"On a panel last week I was the only one who tipped Queens to beat Aberdeen in the Cup. Unfortunately I didn't get along to Hampden on Saturday as I was at another game, but I watched the highlights at night and it was a real cracker of a game. And Queens thoroughly deserved to win. I've already been to see 'Chis' to congratulate him and wish him well for the final.

"We lost to Rangers in the Cup but we have only ourselves to blame as we missed a penalty and you just can't afford to do that against teams like the Gers. I would have loved for it to be a Queens v Thistle final but it was not to be. I might be working for the BBC on Cup Final day but if I'm not I'll be there with my big mate Mark Sutherland and I'll be cheering Queen of the South on from the Stand".

Back down to Earth 14th April 2008
Gordon Chisholm admitted this afternoon that Saturday at Hampden was one of his greatest days in football and one he'll never forget. But the manager stressed "We had our celebrations on Saturday night, we've made it to the final of the Scottish Cup so we must return to normality. It was back to training this morning and we'll have to get down off 'Cloud Nine' and back to 'Mother Earth' again.

"It was the kind of match you dream about. It had everything! There were five goals in a 12 minute spell in the second half and the punters certainly got value for money. Everyone is still buzzing and I believe it's the same in Dumfries. I'm so proud as the spirit of our boys was fantastic. They deserve all the credit that's going.

"I was a bit worried for Sean but he did so well and scored an excellent goal. 'Dobbs' had to come off with a thigh injury but we'll have a look at him on Wednesday and assess whether he's fit or not. They'll be some tired legs after that gruelling 94 minutes on Hampden but it will be the same for the Partick Thistle players who faced Rangers yesterday.

"This will be a hard, punishing week for us but we still have our sights firmly set on fourth place as we take on Thistle on Wednesday night. We lost a bit of ground at the weekend with Dunfermline winning and us on cup duty, but if we can beat the Firhill men we'll regain fourth spot.

"We've yet to beat Thistle this season but our home record is good. So we'll be focussed on the task in hand and all out to put another three points on the board. I'm told 51 points is the most we've managed since we came up to the First Division, so to beat that is an achievement in itself".

FOOTBALLERS LIVES 11th April 2008
Although Eric Paton will be leaving us at the end of the season for 'pastures new ' at Dundee, he has been a loyal servant over the years. He joined Queens from Clydebank in July 2002 and has made 207 first team appearances. He's netted 10 goals and probably one of the most memorable was that suberb free-kick from the touchline at Raydale last season which helped us beat Gretna 3-0. Eric commenced his professional career as a 19-year-old at Hibs and other former clubs include Partick Thistle and Stenhousemuir.

Eric sorts a bit of trouble out

What's been your most exciting moment in your professional football career. And also the biggest match you've played in?
Most exciting was my first team debut for Hibs as I was only 19 at the time. Biggest was winning the First Division Championship while at Easter Road.

What's been your most embarrasing moment in football?
Again, while at Easter Road. I had just started as a YTS on the ground staff and the managers, Alex Miller and Donald Park sent me to make a cup of tea. As I left they shouted 'Don't forget to heat the pot before putting the tea-bags in'. After 20 minutes they came through to see what was keeping me and found me heating the tea-pot in the oven. It took me a long time to live that one down.

Who do you rate the best player at Queen of the South at present?
Paul Burns. He's young, has lots of potential and I think he'll go far.

If you could play for any club in the world who would it be?
I've always liked Rangers but I'd have to go for Barcelona. With the players they have on their books it would be an honour to play alongside talent like that.

What's your favourite film or video?
I'm Scottish and proud of it! So it would have to be 'Braveheart'.

Your favourite food and drink?
I love any kind of chicken dish. For drink--a bottle of Bud.

And the favourite item in your wardrobe?
I've a nice Vivienne Westwood shirt for special occasions. However my favourite gear is a magnificent pair of flowery shorts I bought in T.K. Maxx. I always wear them on holiday abroad.

If you had the chance to spend a week on your own, anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Cancun in Mexico--I spent my honeymoon there and really enjoyed it. It's a beautiful place and I'd love to go back again.

If you had to choose a famous female celebrity to have dinner with, who would it be?
Keeley, the page 3 girl. Being a happily married man I didn't know who she was until Neil Scally came in with the 'Sun' and 'Star' under his arm. She's got a nice--personality!

Do you ever log-on to the official QOS Website and, if so, what do you think of it?
I log on from time to time but I'm not one of those computer fanatics. It's a good read and tells you everything you need to know about the club.

Next Friday our featured player is Jim Lauchlan.

Nobby 8th April 2008
Hopefully Queens can provide our ex-player and former manager Robert [Nobby] Clark with a birthday present on Saturday by defeating the Dons as the big man is 56 on the day. Nobby was a fantastic servant to the Doonhamers playing 340 games between 1975 and 1984. He was player-of-the-year on two occasions and in 1980-81 captained the side to promotion - a feat he later repeated as manager in 1985-86.

Nobby in his playing days
How did we get our name? 8th April 2008
The name Queen of the South--where did it come from? That's a question that's been asked so often by the national media this week. As far as we know it was quoted in the Bible in both New Testament Books, Matthew and Luke as a referral to the Old Testament saga of Soloman and the Queen of Sheba (also known as the Queen of the South).

The actual passage read: The Queen of the South shall rise up in judgement with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

Thus the name 'The only team in the Bible'.

It was quoted in an election speech in 1857 by local writer and politition, David Dunbar, who at that time described our own Royal Burgh as the 'Queen of the South'. And the name obviously stuck!.

The first football side to use the title was Queen of the South Wanderers when founded in 1873 but they had no connection to our present club. It went defunct and at a meeting in Dumfries Town Hall in March 1919 Queen of the South United was formed. By the time they had taken to the field in August of that year to play Nithsdale Wanderers at Palmerston Park the 'United' had mysteriously disappeared but our club still proudly marches on.

Match reaction 5th April 2008
Queens, again failed to find the net at Stirling this afternoon with the match ending goalless, however we did have the better chances. Steve Tosh shot just wide in the second minute and in the closing stages Stephen Dobbie came close twice. Never the less we still retain fourth spot but Dunfermline now close the gap to a single point with their win at Firhill. The only worrying bit is the fact that we haven't scored in our last three games - let's hope we're keeping all the goals for Hampden.

Asked afterwards if a draw was a fair result Gordon Chisholm said, "That's a reasonable comment but the wind made it difficult. It was a game of two halves and that was all down to the conditions. We had no injuries and no one was sent off so we came through the match unscathed which is a big bonus. With the wind behind us in the second half we showed a bit more quality and Dobbs came close with a couple of efforts late on. Although we tried not to talk about the semi-final too much I felt it was unconsciously on their minds. It's the biggest game for the club in 58 years and naturally it's been the 'talk of the town' ever since we beat Dundee. We'll do some light training at Glasgow Green on Friday morning then have a quick tour around Hampden to let the lads have a good look at it. After that we'll get settled down in our hotel in Glasgow and have an early night. With a 12.15pm kick-off the players won't have too long to think about it which is a good thing."

John O'Neill is now in his second spell at Queen of the South. Formerly with Celtic and Bournemouth, manager John Connolly brought him on board in January, 2001. He was in the Championship winning squad of 2001-02 and also featured in the side which lifted the Challenge Cup the following season. 'Jonjo' then had a brief spell with St Mirren but returned to Palmerson within a couple of seasons. He is known by many as the 'Penalty King' having scored 27 from 29 from the 'spot'. John has now made a total of 188 appearances for Queens, netted 70 goals and was our leading scorer in both season 2005-06 and 2006-07 with 10 and 13 goals respectively.

Jonjo shrugs off an opponent

What's been your most exciting moment in your professional football career. And also the biggest match you've played in?
My Celtic debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford. It was Mark Hughes' testimonial and we won 3-1. My biggest match was the Auto Windscreens final at Wembley. I was at Bournemouth at the time but we lost 2-1 in a 'Golden Goal' shoot-out.

What's been your most embarrasing moment in football?
Playing for Queens up at Morton. I'd been 'booked' early in the match and we then lost a last-minute goal. I lost the plot and booted the ball right out of the ground and got my 'marching orders'. My wife says I still have that petulant streak.

Who do you rate the best player at Queen of the South at present?
The whole team's playing well at the moment and that's why I'm struggling to get a game. But I'd go for Stephen Dobbie--if there's a better finisher in Scottish football I've yet to see him. However, I wouldn't fancy sharing a fish supper with him--there wouldn't be much left for me.

If you could play for any club in the world who would it be?
I'd quite fancy Barcelona or Real Madrid. But in my young days I was always a great Man. United fan, so I'd probably go for them.

What's your favourite film or video?
Goodfellas. But I like the Godfather as well.

Your favourite food and drink?
I love pasta, especially spaghetti meatballs which my wife makes for me. For drink, a nice bottle of Corona.

And the favourite item in your wardrobe?
I hear there's a nice blach Hugo Boss shirt doing the rounds in the dressing room just now. I've yet to see it, but I'll speak to 'Burnsy' and get a loan of it sometime.

If you had the chance to spend a week on your own, anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I couldn't go off on my own but if I was allowed just one other person it would be my wife. We had a wonderful honeymoon in the Maldives last year and I'd love to go back. It was Paradise on Earth.

If you had to choose a famous female celebrity to have dinner with, who would it be?
No comment, my wife's sitting right across from me. I'll whisper it--Catherine Zeta Jones.

Do you ever log-on to the official QOS Website and, if so, what do you think of it?
Yes, from time to time. It's pretty good. Being the only 'part-timer', and not training with the others, it's the only way I can keep up-to-date with what's going on at the club.

Next Friday our featured player is Eric Paton.

Off to Stirling 3rd April 2008
In their last match before the cup semi-final, Queens travel to Forthbank Stadium to face Stirling Albion on Saturday. Albion are anchored at the foot of the table and it would now take a miracle for them to survive.

On our last visit up there in December we won 3-1 with Stevie Tosh, Stephen Dobbie and John O'Neill our marksmen and no doubt Gordon Chisholm would gladly take a repeat of that scoreline at the weekend.

Said the manager, "They may be bottom of the league but they're always hard to beat on their home ground. We've only managed one point in our last two outings so I'm looking to get back on the victory trail again.

"I was angry at how the match ended the other night at Almondvale. It should have been a draw--there's no doubt about that. To lose in the manner that we did was very disappointing".

Team News: Stevie Tosh has now served his two match suspension and is available for selection. However, Tosher's had a virus and today was his first back at training. It is expected that he'll feature at some time. Jamie McQuilken was just 'rested' for the Livingston game so he'll be back in the squad as well. Out are Sean O'Connor, still suffering from that neck injury, and Paul Burns who's suspended after his 'sending off' at Almondvale.

Over 500 home and away 2nd April 2008
Queens stalwart Alex Bomphray racked up his 500th Queens away game last night at Almondvale. Showing remarkable consistency he recently notched up his 500th home game a few weeks back. 'Bomphs' has been a regular feature at Queens games since his first game at the age of sixteen when he witnessed Queens beat Queen's Park 6-1, next it was 4-2 versus Dumbarton and then 7-4 against Albion Rovers, so naturally after that Alex was hooked.

Over 1000 and still going strong.
Match reaction 1st April 2008
It was a bad night for Queens at Almondvale tonight. A controversial goal five minutes from time saw them lose 1-0 to Livingston and with Partick Thistle beating Dundee by the same score it means Thistle have now closed the gap to only three points and still have a match in hand. To make matters worse Gordon Chisholm was sent to the stand by the referee for protesting at the late goal and Paul Burns was 'red carded' in injury time which means he will miss Saturday's match at Stirling.

Said an angry and frustrated manager, "I was very disappointed at how the match ended. I didn't think the goal should have stood as the linesman had flagged for offside but was over-ruled. And I don't think Burnsy's foul merited a 'red-card'.

"To be sent to the stand by the ref was also annoying as it's the first time it's ever happened to me. Overall I thought we had the better chances and a draw would have been a fairer result".

A busy month ahead 31st March 2008
April is going to be a very busy month for Queens with six matches scheduled. We kick-off tomorrow night with a visit to Livingston, a team we've already beaten twice at Palmerston this season. However, the game at Almondvale in October ended in a 2-2 draw with that deadly duo, O'Connor and Dobbie, grabbing a goal apiece.

Livvy picked up three precious points at the weekend with a 2-1 home win over bottom dogs, Stirling Albion, but they will be keen to create an even bigger gap beteen themselves and Clyde and Morton to avoid those dreaded 'play-offs'.

Said Gordon Chisholm, "All the teams we're playing just now are fighting for their lives. This is a hard league and easy games are few and far between.

"I only hope the playing conditions are better than they were on Saturday--that type of weather just makes a mockery of football. I couldn't fault the input or application of our players but it's impossible to perform well in weather like that.

"We'll be going up to Livingston hoping for all three points. However, a draw would keep our fine unbeaten run going, and I'd like it to continue through to the end of the season.

I don't want to hear anyone saying, 'there's nothing to play for in the league now'. I want to finish as high up the table as possible and, owing to injuries and suspensions, they're 'places up for grabs'.

"We've the semi-final of the Scottish Cup a week on Saturday and every single player would 'give their eye teeth' to play in that one. So there is plenty to play for!"

Team News: Stevie Tosh is still suspended and will miss the Livingston game. Neil MacFarlane has a back injury which continues to give him pain, so it will be another late call on that one. Following his neck injury against Morton, Sean O'Connor will be out for the next two games and, at this moment in time, he is rated 50-50 to feature in the cup-tie.

A Legend Returns 31st March 2008
Two of the most prolific strikers Queen of the South have ever known met up at Palmerston on Saturday. Jim Patterson, a 'legend in his time', came face-to-face with our present top markman, Stephen Dobbie. To date 'Dobbs' has netted 31 goals since joining Queens last January but has a long way to go to catch up with 'Big Jim'. Jim hailed from Luncarty, Perthshire and signed for Queens as a 19-year-old in 1949. He was 14 years at Palmerston and became a huge favourite with the home fans. He boasts an unbelievable goal-scoring record! In 462 appearances he scored no fewer than 251 times with 11 hat-tricks to add to his credit. That's an average which takes some beating.

Match reaction 29th March 2008
This was the first goalless draw of the season at Palmerston. It was a poorish game and to be fair the only winner was the wind. Before kick-off the referee stated he'd start the match but couldn't guarantee it would be played to a finish. Chances were few and far between but Jamie MacDonald saved the day with a fabulous save in the dying minutes. There was an anxious incident when Sean O'Connor fell like a log to the ground and lay motionless for a while. He was stretchered off and taken to hospital with his neck in a brace but hopefully all is well. (Bulletin to follow). Said Gordon Chisholm;

"Conditions were shocking and football wasn't meant to be played in this type of weather. The wind killed the game as a contest and it was so strong that some high balls were blown backwards. When it gets to that stage it's down to pure luck. Neither side deserved 3 points and a draw was a fair outcome. But our keeper saved us with a superb stop late on. We can't fault the lads for effort, they gave everything but it was a sloppy affair. There's little change in the league and we still have a chance to catch St Johnstone. We've Livingston and Stirling coming up and I'd like to think we can pick up some points in these games."

Owing to Davie Irons' fathers bereavement Derek Collins took charge of proceedings and added, "It was a hard earned point and well deserved. We defended well, displayed a lot of resolve at times and could well have scored late in the game. It was a positive point and our lads applied themselves well. Palmerston is never an easy place to come but Morton have been here three times this season, including the Gretna cup tie, and we're still unbeaten."

When Stephen Dobbie signed an 18-month extension contract in January he stated then that he'd set himself a target ot 20 goals this season. Well 'Dobbs' has now reached that figure with at least seven games still remaining and it's good to see him now ahead of Richard Offiong. Of all his goals this seaon 'Dobbs' reckons his best was only a couple of weeks ago although we lost 2-1 at St Johnstone. But he admits the opener against Dundee in the cup-tie comes a close second. His wife Susanne and his mum and dad are his three biggest fans and travel all over the country to watch him play.

Dobbs celebrates his Quarter Final goal

What's been your most exciting moment in your professional football career. And also the biggest match you've played in?
The most exciting was when I came off the bench for Hibs to score the equaliser against Rangers in the CIS Cup semi-final. We went on to win the tie in a penalty 'shoot-out'. As for my biggest match, I'd go for the final of that same competition even though we lost 2-0 to Livingston. We had 40,000 Hibs fans cheering us on.

What's been your most embarrasing moment in football?
There's been nothing too drastic yet, but no doubt something will happen one of those days.

Who do you rate the best player at Queen of the South at present?
It's a toss-up between Paul Burns and Bob Harris. Both are talented young players with a bright future ahead of them.

If you could play for any club in the world who would it be?
Rangers. I supported them as a boy and went to all their matches with my dad and grandfather.

What's your favourite film or video?
Pulp Fiction with Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta.

Your favourite food and drink?
Any chicken dish together with a glass of rose wine for dinner.

And the favourite item in your wardrobe?
I'm not someone who goes out and buys a lot of fancy gear. I like my suit jacket with jeans for the casual look.

If you had the chance to spend a week on your own, anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I just got married last year so I'd never go and leave Susanne. We spent a romantic honeymoon in Cancun, Mexico and had a marvellous two weeks. So, I'd like to go back there again.

If you had to choose a famous female celebrity to have dinner with, who would it be?
Eva Mendes.

Yes, quite often. I think it's really good!. On Friday nights I always log on to see what the other lads are saying on 'Footballer's Lives'. On Saturday night I like to read the Match Reaction, the Match Report and view the goals from David Gow.
