Reaction 30th March 2002
Said John Connolly after the match, "Considering all of the things that went against us this afternoon, a draw was a great result and with both Alloa and Clydebank drawing it keeps us out in front at the top.

Just before kick-off we lost Paddy Atkinson with a calf strain then at half time we had to take off Colin Scott with a hamstring injury, this meant that we had to play the whole second half with a new 'keeper who had only met the rest of the squad at training on Thursday night for the first time. To make matters even worse Derek Anderson was sent off and we had to play the last fifteen minutes reduced to ten men.

So all in all it really was a great result. We are not going to score three or four goals every week but I believe that's our first goalless draw this season, which can't be bad. We created a lot of chances out there but just couldn't find the net.

From now on in every game is going to be like a cup final and although we're five points clear with only five games to go it's not over until the fat lady sings."
Youngest Ever 29th March 2002
The Internet Fan Club has been growing apace recently with over 1500 members now registered, this afternoon though we were joined by the youngest member yet and at only one and a quarter hours old Holly Iona Pearson has made her way into the hoards of Doonhamers all over the world, her Uncle Paul Pearson registered Holly who was born at 2pm UK time in Cairo, Egypt. Congratulations to all.

So can anyone beat the one and a quarter hour record then?, maybe if laptops are allowed into maternity wards eh Sandy!

With the transfer deadline day effectively tomorrow Queens have signed up an experienced goalkeeper in the form of Unibond first division side Spennymoor United's 'keeper Stuart Dawson. Stuart has been signed until the end of the season as cover for Colin Scott, he has played with Whitby Town, Tow Law, Durham City, Peterlee, Stockton, Easington as well as Spennymoor. Was Man of the Match in the same FA Vase final at Wembley that both Jarrod Suddick and Stephen Pickering appeared in for Tow Law Town.

Finally Queens tonight confirmed that an approach had been made to Hamilton regarding their midfielder Stuart Callaghan, who scored twice against the Doonhamers earlier this month, however it was decided not to pursue the interest.
Man of the Match 25th March 2002

Paddy's Punts 24th March 2002
Our very own Mr Versatile Paddy Atkinson has another string to his bow as we hear of his latest venture as a radio pundit. Make sure that next Saturday at 11:05am you have your radio tuned in to Teamtalk 252, formerly Atlantic 252, on 252 long wave or Sky Digital 910 and you will hear Paddy's regular spot where he gives his predictions on the games in Scotland and allegedly sings a song and tells a joke!! Must be worth a listen.

On the subject of radio pundits it was good to hear a very well executed set up job performed on BBC Scotland's Richard Gordon on the 'Off the Ball' feature on Saturday on the way to the game. With the assistance of John Lambie, Tam and Stuart managed to set the 'expert' up to ensure that he will never make the same mistake as he had days earlier on Tam Cowan's TV show when he named the Queens manager as Billy McLaren. Richard also revealed that he had suffered with 'pelters all week' from his colleague and massive Queens fan Sandra Brown. Well done to Sandra, Stuart, Tam and John Lambie.

If you would like to see Peter Weathersons goal this afternoon and Queens fourth, then click on the image below. Thanks again to Queens fan David Gow for the clip.
Reaction 23rd March 2002
Said Manager John Connolly, "Four one away from home is always a good result but we could have scored five or six. I thought we played great and again the Queens fans were brilliant, it's like having an extra man on the park, however we're not getting carried away and will continue to take one game at a time but that is four wins on the trot and we've given ourselves a really big chance.

I rested Peter Weatherson simply because he's been playing two games a week up to last weekend plus the fact he had a really hard match against Cowdenbeath last Saturday.

Big Sean O'Connor felt his hamstring a bit tight at half time, so at three one up it was no good risking another injury, Peter came on played well and scored another goal and that tied up the game."
Latest Team News 22nd March 2002
The latest update on player injuries is that those returning to the squad are Derek Lyle, Gordon Connolly and Allan Moore. Very doubtful is John O'Neill and almost definite non-starters are George O'Boyle and Steve Bowey.
Post Training Team News 21st March 2002
The injury situation shows no great improvement ahead of this weekend's game against Stenhousemuir at Ochilview. Derek Allan, George O'Boyle, Derek Lyle, Allan Moore, John O'Neill and Steve Bowey are all still carrying injuries, just who will make it will depend on some last minute fitness checks.
Morton Time 21st March 2002
7:45 pm kick-off for the re-arranged match versus Morton at Cappielow on the 2nd April.
Morton Date 20th March 2002
The away fixture versus Morton has been re-arranged for 2nd April 2002 at Cappielow, pitch conditions permitting of course as both scheduled matches there this week have been postponed.
Midweek Matches 18th March 2002
Whilst Queens do not have a midweek match themselves , there will be four matches this midweek in the Second division, on Tuesday evening it's:

Alloa v Stranraer
Morton v Forfar
Stenhousemuir v Hamilton

Whilst Wednesday evening sees Clydebank take on Berwick, so they are important matches and ones we will be hoping that our traditional derby rivals will be able to help us out with.
Man of the Match 18th March 2002
Top man on Saturday as voted by the members of the Internet Fan Club was Peter Weatherson with his two goal show, second place went to Andy Aitken for yet another rock steady performance and third to full-back turned outside right Alan Gray.

Reaction 16th March 2002
Said an elated John Connolly "After two fairly open games against Stranraer we knew this would be a different type of game, we were sure Cowdenbeath would pack their defence and try and hit us on the break for a draw away from home would be a good result for them. We were all on a high after the matches against Stranraer so to pick up another three points was just great for us. We've now won nine out of our last twelve games and opened up a bit of space at the top of the table but every match now will be like a cup final".

His biggest worry now is injuries, commenting on them John said, "Peter went over on his ankle and suffered a bit of cramp but I think he'll be okay. John O'Neill tweaked a hamstring so we'll have to wait and see how that goes. Steve Bowey is probably the biggest worry, he pulled a calf muscle while limbering up prior to the game, the one plus factor is we don't have a midweek match this week which will give injuries a chance to heal."

Two goal Peter Weatherson was thrilled to be hitting the net again but Peter said, "It's the three points that matter not who scores, I did get a break with the first one, John O'Neill put through a great ball and my shot just squirmed in off the post but it's breaks like that that you need, the second goal came from really good move, big Sean put me through and I just slipped the ball past the keeper."

Sean O'Connor, making his debut for Queens said, "It was a tough game but one we needed to win, it certainly wasn't a classic but we worked hard to grind out a result."
Bits and Pieces 15th March 2002
There seems a bit of confusion as to the official name of one of our opponents in this years Bell's Division Two championship, contrary views have been put forward on the Message Board suggesting that they could be known as either Morton or Greenock Morton. The mystery will have to be cleared up by someone at the Greenock club as whilst the official SFL book for this season and the fixture lists have them as Morton their club badge does show them as Greenock Morton as does their last few programmes for matches against us. Still a mystery.

The 'Standard' caused a wee bit of confusion this mid-week as they published some excellent action photographs of the 3-1 victory over Stranraer last weekend. There was however a problem with one of the photo's where both players were named incorrectly as Lyle and Glancy, anyone clear up who they actually were?

Signing News 15th March 2002
Queens have now secured the services of Dundee United striker Sean O'Connor until the end of next season, the 6' 3" front man will most recently be remembered as possibly the most impressive player on the park during the 6-5 defeat of Morton a couple of weeks ago at Palmerston. O'Connor having been on loan at Morton for most of this season before being recalled by United last week. Sean was previously with Hednesford Town where he was nurtured and rose through their youth ranks being born in nearby Wolverhampton on the 7th August 1981. He made his debut for Dundee United in the SPL against Hearts in March 2000 and has also had loan spells at Portadown and Rochdale.
Team News 14th March 2002
Following another rigorous training session in Dumfries this evening the injury situation can be summarised as follows; George O'Boyle, Derek Allan, Gordon Connolly and Allan Moore are all out for Saturday's clash with Cowdenbeath at Palmerston, better news though is that Steve Bowey is fit again and after watching from the bench on Tuesday evening may well take part on Saturday at some point.

Reaction 12th March 2002
Talking from the team coach a delighted John Connolly said, "I mentioned before the game that I'd take a draw but this win was a real bonus. It was a big result for us and I felt the commitment shown by the team was brilliant and we deserved all three points. We played really well in the first half but having taken the lead we conceded a bad goal just before the interval, however wee Joe McAlpine's winner was a beauty and worthy of winning any game and I must say a big thank you to the Queens fans, you were just brilliant, the support you gave us was out of this world.

Alloa and Clydebank drawing was also a good result for us and now leaves us clear at the top."

Commenting on the press reports regarding Dundee United striker Sean O'Connor the manager added, "We are still working on it, we have spoken to Dundee United but at this moment in time I don't think anything will happen before the weekend."
Team News 11th March 2002
Gordon Connelly will miss tomorrow nights derby return against Stranraer at Stair Park with his ankle injury and also missing will be George O'Boyle whilst both Steve Bowey and Allan Moore are rated doubtful.

Manager John Connolly admitted that he always knew that the gruelling two matches a week schedule would bring problems and he is being proved right.

Remember that the kick-off time is 7:30pm
Super South - Super Fans 11th March 2002
Speaking to Queen's Press Officer, Bill Goldie, earlier today, Gordon Connelly, who limped off with an injured ankle fifteen minutes before the end on Saturday was full of praise for the Queen's supporters, said Connelly, "There was a fantastic atmosphere on Saturday especially in the second half, when our fans moved from the new stand to behind the goal, they were just great and kept the team going in the later stages of the game when legs begin to tire. I'd just like to say that the players really appreciated it."
Man of the Match 11th March 2002
By the narrowest of margins Joe McAlpine snatches the Man of the Match award for his two goal performance against Stranraer, only 0.01 of a point behind from the 70 votes cast was goal-maker Derek Lyle whilst third place was taken by Andy Aitken who held the defence together through a tough first half.

The remainder of the scores went as follows and the Internet Fan Club player of the season league table can be found via the Man of the Match link.

Said John Connolly, "Yes, that's us on top of the table again, but we've been there twice already this season and we know it's hard to stay there, however, we will just take one game at a time and go on from there. We lost a bad first goal then got a break but we took full advantage and went down the field to equalise and score two more to win the match.

Stranraer were the better side in the first half but I thought we played brilliant in the second period and thoroughly deserved the points, however it's a funny old league this, just look at today's results - the two bottom teams beating the top two - anything can happen!"

Derek Lyle, who has just been signed for another month on loan said, "I am really enjoying it here with Queens, it's a great club and there's a great atmosphere at Palmerston. The league isn't any faster than the first division but it isn't quite as hard. I'd really like to be here long enough to help Queens go up."
Team News 7th March 2002
Following training this evening John Connolly reports that he has a number of problems, definitely out for Saturday is Derek Allan however it is hoped that he will be back in full training next week, whilst doubtful for Saturday are Allan Moore, Steve Bowey and George O'Boyle.

Some major good news however is that Derek Lyle has been signed for another month on loan from Cup semi-finalists Partick Thistle, that will see the front man with us until the middle of April.
Man of the Match 7th March 2002
No doubt where the members of the Internet Fan Club felt we lost the match on Tuesday night as the midfield recorded possibly the lowest aggregate score of the season. Not surprisingly the Man of the Match was voted as goalkeeper Colin Scott, second place going to on-loan goal scoring front-man Derek Lyle and third to the hard working Peter Weatherson.

Manager John Connolly said, "I always knew it was going to be a difficult game, Hamilton are a good team, they are also a full-time side coming on the back of a 4-1 win on Saturday. We managed to get in front but then lost two goals at critical times. The first just two minutes after we'd scored and the other just minutes before half-time. At 2-1 down we had to chase the game and were eventually caught out for the third goal."

Skipper Jim Thomson commented, "We are very, very disappointed, not only with the score but also with the display. That's two times we have gone top of the table and then lost the next game, but there are still ten games to go and anything can happen so I can only ask the fans to be patient."

The crowd tonight was a very respectable 1592, however the visiting fans numbered more than 400, a fact that wasn't lost on the officials of the home club who were very impressed by the Doonhamers support.

Appearing as a trialist this evening was midfielder Tom Poston who has had short spells with Dr Martens League side Hednesford Town, Stafford Rangers, Kidderminster Harriers, Moor Green, Aston Villa(Academy), Norwich City(Academy) and has played some football in the USA.
Man of the Match 4th March 2002

Team News 4th March 2002
Ahead of tomorrow nights clash with Hamilton Accies at New Douglas Park, Queens team news is that three players will be missing whilst two return. Out will be midfielder Steve Bowey, forward George O'Boyle and defender Derek Allan all with calf strains whilst in comes top scorer John O'Neill and midfielder Barry Donald.

Also confirmation that kick-off will be 7.45pm and not as reported here earlier in the week at 7.30pm (or even 5.30pm!!). Please note however that next Tuesday's match at Stranraer is scheduled for a 7.30pm kick-off at this time.

Reaction 2nd March 2002
Queen of the South manager John Connolly said, "It was a fantastic result they did put us under a bit of pressure in the second half but we defended well and deserved the three points. We are now top of the table and everyone will be out to beat us and let's not forget there is still eleven games to go so we mustn't be complacent.

The only disappointment was a calf injury to Steve Bowey and he could be out for two to three weeks, but we have a strong pool and are confident we can get a result at Hamilton on Tuesday night."
Team News 28th February 2002
Four players are doubtful for Saturday's clash with Clydebank at Cappielow, George O'Boyle and Derek Allan are both suffering with calf strains whilst Barry Donald is just resuming training after his leg injury sustained at Berwick but John O'Neill is also very doubtful after being laid low all week.
A Palmy Record? 28th February 2002
The nine goals scored in the first half at Palmerston in Tuesday evenings encounter have resulted in a number of callers to Queen's Press Officer Bill Goldie asking whether this is a Palmerston record.

Bill tells us that it may well be the highest tally of first half goals seen in a league match at Palmerston but that it is difficult to say as only full-time scores are kept on record, the only way to find out is to do a bit of research at the local library and go back through the records for games where more than nine goals have been scored at Palmerston via the local papers microfiche records.

The games that are possibilities are:
1983 - Stranraer - 6-3
1971 - East Stirling - 4-5
1966 - Albion Rovers - 7-4
1958 - Rangers - 3-6
1954 - St.Mirren - 2-7
1952 - Hibernian - 2-7
1948 - Partick - 8-2
1947 - Falkirk - 6-6
1932 - Bo'ness - 10-0
