The Queens Park scenario 29th June 2005
Total confusion reigned today concerning our first pre-season friendly match against Queen Park a week tonight. Firstly, in the official SFA list of scheduled friendlies published in today's 'Daily Record' it stated that the match would take place at Palmerston when everyone knew it was an away fixture.

Then, to make matters worse, several Queens' fans who had logged on to the Queens Park website were astonished to discover that all three of their proposed friendlies would be played 'behind closed doors'.

This came as a complete 'shock' to all at Palmerston who were under the impression the game was an official one and open to spectators and the Q.O.S. Travel Club had a coach booked for the trip to Glasgow. Even manager, Iain Scott (on holiday in Cyprus) was 'shocked' when the news was broken to him and he phoned home to clarify the position. But unfortunately it's true!

The game will take place on Wednesday, 6th July as planned but at St. Aloysius playing fields at Stepps (just east of Glasgow). It was Queens Park boss Billy Stark who decided it was to be 'unofficial' and that it would be 'behind closed doors'.

Said Queens' Chairman, David Rae. "I knew nothing about this until this morning! Everyone at the club, myself, the management team and all the players thought it was to be an official pre-season match just like the other five games we have planned. It came as a shock and I must apologise to all Queen of the South fans, in particular the Travel Club, who had a bus already booked. It's extremely disappointing!"

Training tonight

Chris Carr was back in the thick of the action for tonight's training session at the Crichton. Richie Barnard was again missing as his girlfriend gave birth to a baby girl last night. Our congratulations to them both.

Training ground news 27th June 2005
After another exhausting training session at the Crichton on Saturday, manager, Iain Scott, jetted off for a well-earned two week holiday in sunny Cyprus yesterday. Apart from those still on holiday, and a couple unavailable, there was a good turnout of 20 players which included three 'trialists'. David McNiven was missing but the striker had put in two extra 'shifts' at Dumfries on Thursday and Friday.

In the time trials skipper, Steve Bowey, came in first, followed by a fit-looking Eric Paton who has shed a stone in weight in the six-week summer break while Stephen Payne also looked to be in very good shape. As 'Bowser' sprinted across the finishing line one onlooker was heard to remark, 'If that's him with a dodgy knee, I can't wait to see him fully fit'.

Tonight's training session was a bit more relaxed and the players appeared to be enjoying themselves on a warn summer's evening. Once again 20 were in attendance--David McNiven was back but missing was Richie Barnard whose wife was due to give birth at anytime now.

News round up 27th June 2005
Ex-Queens players appearing at the Crichton on Saturday were Mark Weir and Brian Caldwell who now play for Carluke Juniors. Their team easily beat the Crichton (South League) side 5-0.

Nice to see Bowser, Scotty, Warren and a couple of the younger players taking part in Lochmaben Gala Day on Saturday.

From the Chairman 24th June 2005
I'm glad most of you enjoyed my recent 'Diary' article, particularly the Queens' fan from Chiswick. I always said that I'd keep you informed of the happenings at Palmerston whether it be through the 'Programme Notes' or the 'Website'. Nevertheless, certain private matters must remain within the confines of the boardroom and that's how it will always be. I'm a retired farmer and a businessman, not a 'computer buff' and I freely admit I couldn't tell the difference between a CD ROM and a modem. Megabytes and gigabytes mean nothing to me, I'm more interested in getting bodies through our turnstiles. However, I do get any interesting or important issues passed on to me, either verbally or by print-outs. So I'm very well informed although I don't have access to the Internet. I will listen to any constructive criticism but I totally ignore any personal abuse or derogatory remarks against players, management or staff.
Stadium Plans: The £4.8 million ground improvement plan has been delayed from our original timescale and we may start on the Terregles Street end first. I'm sorry for all those fans who came along with their flags and banners for their 'last stand' on the Glasgow Street terracing, but these things happen and hindsight is a wonderful thing. As Rabbie Burns said, 'The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley'.
We all knew there could be problems but they're not unsurmountable, but it's absolutely essential we have all funding in place before work commences. Personally, I think it would work in our favour to tackle the Terregles Street end first. It would be more practical, for if we draw a big club in a cup-tie and both ends of the ground were unavailable we could only manage a crowd of around 3500 which would be a big blow financially. At least, if the Terregles Street stand was completed it would allow us another 1500 even if work by then was in progress at the other end. But I'll keep you all informed of any future developments.
Tesco: Yesterday, my fellow director Billy Hewitson and myself travelled up to Edinburgh for a meeting with Tesco representatives regarding the future of their former premises. After nothing but telephone calls those past few months it was good to be round a table for face-to-face dialogue. I can't say much about it until it's been discussed at Board level, but further meetings with Tesco will take place in the not too distant future.
League fixtures: I'm not going to hide the fact that I was a bit disappointed when our league fixtures were announced yesterday. With only one home game--against Brechin City--in the four opening matches, August is going to be a tough month for us financially. One request I did make to the S.F.L. was that our home fixtures didn't clash with those of Gretna. I felt that this was in the interests of both clubs and I'm glad that the 'powers that be' have done what I asked.

We'll now have to hope for decent home draws in the Bell's Challenge Cup and the C.I.S. Cup, particularly in the latter with Premier League sides involved. I realise 'gate money' would be shared, but like every other club at our level, it would be nice to get a top Premier League team, both financially and for the sake of our fans.

Five-a-sides: I was pleased to see so many of our coaches and young players involved in the recent Guid Nychburris Five-a-side tournament. I'm always glad when they're connected with community events, especially when it's voluntary and youngsters are participating.

New Book: A new Queens' book to celebrate our 85th anniversary will be on sale at the Hibs game on Saturday, 16th July. It charts our progress over the past 11 years which have included some memorable matches. It sells at £7.00 but it's printed in full colour, and that was my decision. I must point out that after printing costs and expenses all profits and advertising revenue will go to the club.
Other News: I would like to announce that, following the retirement of Dick Shaw, our assistant secretary, Margaret Bell, will now take over full secretarial duties. Margaret has been with us now for 16 years and has excellent knowledge of the job.

Palmerston Park is now looking green and fresh again after the 'hammering' it took last season. I had a walk on it this morning when our groundsman wasn't looking, and it felt lush and springy. A lot of credit must go to Kevin McCormick who has been working like a Trojan those past couple of months.

And finally! Season tickets will go on sale a week on Monday, 11th July. All prices are the same as last season and they can be purchased at the office during normal working hours, 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

New season fixtures 23rd June 2005
It will be another tough start for Queens in the league this season with three of their first four fixtures away from home. They kick-off the league programme with a visit to Perth on Saturday, 6th August to meet St Johnstone; on Saturday, 13th August they are at home to Brechin City followed by away matches on Saturday, 20th and 27th August against Dundee (if they are still in the First Division) and Clyde respectively.

Manager, Iain Scott, is quite happy with an away game to start off and said, "We beat St Johnstone 3-1 at McDiarmid Park at the same time last year and I'd be delighted with the same scoreline this time around". However, our Chairman, David Rae wasn't quite so glad and commented, "Only one home match in the first four is not good news financially, and without being disrespectful to Brechin, I don't think they'll bring a big travelling support".

Over the festive season we play hosts to St Mirren on Monday, 26th December and meet Stranraer at Stair Park on Monday, 2nd January.

Check out the 'Fixtures' link for the full list for next season.

Training resumes 23rd June 2005
There was a good turn out when pre-season training resumed at the Crichton last night. Only four members of the first team squad were missing, Brian Reid, Gary Wood and Chris Carr (all on holiday) and keeper, Colin Scott, not quite recovered yet from close-season surgery. Stuart Hill was also absent, but only due to work commitments.

The manager was absolutely delighted to see everyone in good shape. Said 'Scotty', "Every single one of them came up to scratch on both weight and fitness levels. Not one fine--and that's how I like it!. Ten of them were in today for extra training and they'll be more back tomorrow for another session. The full squad will be training on Saturday and several players are even coming in every day next week to improve their fitness levels even further. They're taking time off work voluntarily and to me that really is dedication at its best.

"Two players who have done exceptionally well are David McNiven and Tommy English. David has shed nine pounds and we now have a new 'slim-line McNiven'. I'm really pleased for him! Last season was a difficult one for him with family illness then a motor accident, but despite that he still finished up our leading scorer. Tommy has been doing a lot of weight training in the 'close season'. He looks stronger and fitter and I'm expecting a lot from him this time around.

"Bowser was back and leading from the front as usual. He still has a 'niggle' in that knee, but it's not bothering him too much at present. It's just 'wait and see' and if the worst comes to worst we'll just have to get him in for a bit of 'key-hole surgery'. John O'Neill was there as well for his first training session with us since re-signing towards the end of last season. And I must say, he was full of endeavour and appeared really 'up for it'.

"The young Canadian lad was there too. He's 22 and quite tall. He's a centre-half and coming along again for another session on Saturday. Also joining us then will be a left-sided player from the Newcastle area and a striker who was on the 'books' of a Premiership club down south last season. However, as I've said before, we have our full quota of players already signed and only if someone comes in and really 'stands out' would I approach the Chairman, 'cap in hand'.

"I received a letter and a cheque for £50 from a fan this week and he requested it be put towards the players' wage bill. I only wish we had a few rich benefactors out there who would send in cheques with a few more zeros on the end. Seriously though, I thought it was a wonderful and thoughtful gesture and it was really appreciated".

Coaching Course 20th June 2005
Iain Scott returned home last night after a grueling one week U.E.F.A. 'A' Advanced Grade coaching course at Rangers' Murray Park. On the testing panel were David Moyes (Everton), Tommy Craig (Newcastle) and from North of the Border Alex Smith, Dick Campbell and Jimmy Sinclair. Said 'Scotty', "They were all brilliant but it was hard going. I even got the opportunity to do a personal session for Alex and Tommy. They both appeared quite impressed and Tommy even said he might try out some of my ideas at St James Park which was a real compliment.

"Every day was a long one and although it was hard work it was a great experience. I'll now have to wait seven to ten days before I know if I've been successful, however, I was quite pleased at what I achieved and I'm reasonably confident.

"I had Stuart Lovell's company all week and it 'opened my eyes' to what he's capable of. He's a terrific player and now he's settled in at Palmerston I'm really excited for him this coming season".

Pre-season Training 20th June 2005
Queens' players report back for pre-season training on Wednesday evening. Said manager, Iain Scott, "They were all given targets before they left for the summer break, so woe betide anyone who doesn't measure up. They'll be fined! I'll be doing my usual Sergeant Major inspection and they'll all be tested on both weight and fitness levels on their arrival. Added 'Scotty', "We've a Canadian lad joining us for training. He's a centre-half, so we'll have a look at him". The training session will take place at the Crichton, commencing around 7.00 p.m.

Guid Nychburris Tournament 16th June 2005
Queens' coaches and young players have been busy this week assisting with the annual Guid Nychburris Five-a-Side tournament held at the Kingholm. Hundreds of youngsters from all over the region took part and the competition was once again expertly organised by our Player Recruitment Officer, Gordon Hyslop. Other members of staff helped out with important duties such as refereeing, running the line etc.and the tournament, which concluded tonight, proved again to be a huge success.

No new striker for Queens 13th June 2005
Unfortunately, there will be no new striker coming to Palmerston. After being approached by a player last week, manager Iain Scott consulted the chairman but financially the club just couldn't afford it since strikers, in particular, do command quite a bit of money. Said 'Scotty', I had a talk with the chairman but it just wasn't possible at this moment in time. But I must stress that Davy has been brilliant and in the past has 'bent over backwards' to help whenever he could. Nevertheless, financial security must be our main priority, for Queens have always been a well-run club. It is flattering, however, that players have been contacting us and offering their services as they realise that Queen of the South are a good team to play for".

Meanwhile, the manager has agreed terms with Stuart Hill who is now all set to sign a new contract at the beginning of next week.Added 'Scotty', "Stuart had been badly advised but it's now all been sorted out and he's going to sign. But I must point out that there was never any animosity between ourselves and Gretna regarding the player. Personally, I get on very well with Rowan Alexander and Danny Lennon. Both clubs abided by the rules during negotiations and everything was conducted through the proper channels".

Now a bit of bad news--'Bowser' is injured again! "It's so disappointing" said the manager. "It was only during the last six weeks of the season that he was totally free from injury and was playing really well and 'flying' during training. It was all so simple! He was down on the beach playing about with his kids when he turned awkwardly and injured a knee ligament. We'll have to give it a day or two for the swelling to go down but I've got a bad feeling he might well require an operation".

Some better news, however. Derek Lyle and Colin Scott have both recovered from surgery and are fighting hard to be ready for the new season. Del Boy is hoping to be fit for the first game while Colin should play again by mid-August.

Today the manager was heading up the road for a very important engagement--a U.E.F.A. 'A' Advanced Grade coaching course at Murray Park. "It's the big one" he admitted. "And very difficult. It lasts six days, right through until Sunday, and last year only 3 out of the 16 involved got their badge. But I'll be in good company for Stuart Lovell will be there and so too will be Motherwell captain, Scott Leitch and Alex Clelland from Livingston". So, good luck, 'Scotty'.

The book has been produced with the club and proceeds will directly benefit Queens. The book should be available for the first home friendly match and may be available to buy online via this website. 'Scotty' still after a new striker 7th June 2005
Manager, Iain Scott, is still keen to get a new striker on board before the start of the season. Said 'Scotty', "I had a young striker contact me this morning. I'm not naming names but he's from our league and said he'd be interested in joining us. Financially we can't afford him but I'll have a quiet chat with the chairman to see if the position has changed any since we last spoke".

Added the manager, "A personal letter has gone out to every player this week telling them what's expected of them this coming season--both as an individual and as a team. I also thanked each and every one of them for the tremendous effort last season to finish fourth but also outlined an achievable and realistic goal for this season".

Asked about his views on the new 'play-offs' rule 'Scotty' confessed, "Personally, I'm not really in favour of them but I can see why they've been introduced. They will bring in additional revenue which benefits the league and that has been proven in England. Just look at Carlisle United and how much they made out of it.

"Ideally, two up and two down in all four divisions is my preference, but I don't think the Premier League would agree to that. They are reluctant to budge from their existing set-up with only one team relegated, but if one or two of the bigger clubs--like Dundee last season--were to be faced with the 'drop', they just might have a change of heart".

Davy's Diary 4th June 2005
Who said, 'A chairman gets a rest in the close-season'. Just try telling that to Davy Rae! Here's a brief account of a week in the chairman's life.

Thursday, 26th May. Called into the Palmerston office to attend to some business and sign some cheques. In the evening it was the annual Shirt Sponsorship draw in the Palmerston Lounge. I was delighted that there was a record entry of 153 which raised a most welcome sum of over £53,000 for the club. My thanks to all who helped organise it, particularly Ian and Margaret Heuchan who have had an extremely busy time of it those past couple of weeks.
My congratulations also to this year's winners, Dumfries Body Repair Centre. It's always nice to see a local firm win the sponsorship. On the subject of 'Body Repairs', I just might just pop in to see them for my own body's been through a lot those past couple of months.

Friday, 27th May. Left home early and collected my papers at Lockerbie, then headed up the M74 to Hampden for the A.G.M. of the S.F.L. Sitting alongside Jim Ballantyne of Airdrie and Jim Bark from Stranraer. Like myself, Jim Ballantyne is a relative newcomer to the chairman's role but Jim Bark is a seasoned campaigner having held the post on numerous occasions during his long service at Stair Park. The Airdrie chairman is quite a character but a most likeable person and I was glad to see him voted onto one of the committees.

The main topic on the agenda was a proposal to alter the relegation and promotion issue. It was a close vote but it was passed that play-offs would be held at the end of the season to decide who goes up and down, but it still wouldn't affect the respective top team being promoted nor the bottom side being relegated. I'm not going into it in any more detail as you've probably read all about it in the national newspapers.

Following the business part of the meeting the draw was made for the Bell's Challenge Cup which we ourselves won two years ago. And who did we get--Albion Rovers at home again-- the team who knocked us out in the first round of the C.I.S. Cup last season. That defeat cost us dearly, so we'll be all out to make amends come the 30th of July.

Saturday, 28th May. Had a restful day apart from my mobile phone 'playing up'. I've just changed it for a newer model and haven't quite got to grips with it yet. In the afternoon I settled down to watch the Scottish Cup final on T.V. I usually root for the 'underdogs', but on this occasion I was quite glad to see Celtic win for the sake of Martin O'Neill.

Sunday, 29th May. Had a day of rest to 'chill out' as the kids call it now. Read the Sunday papers but it's not quite the same when Queens aren't playing.

Monday, 30th May. Attended to some official club business and made a few important phone calls. Heard the news that the Crichton had agreed to allow us training facilities from late June to September. Not the main park this time but the field adjacent to it and the smaller pitch alongside the church. But it's better than nothing and we'll also have the new pitch at King George V, which we've subscribed to, whenever it's ready.

Was also informed later in the day that our Under-13 team had won the prestigious Ayr International Tournament for the first time ever. It's a massive achievement and one which we are proud of. I'm told that the youngsters were all so excited that they slowed down and displayed the trophy from the minibus at every small town and village on the way home.

Tuesday, 31st May. Off to Gleneagles with 'Scotty' and fellow director, Billy Hewitson, for the Bell's Annual Awards. It's a beautiful hotel and we were all looking forward to it. Unfortunately we didn't win anything this year but our two South of Scotland neighbours, Gretna and Stranraer, both did well. Gretna boss, Rowan Alexander, won the Third Division 'Manager of the Year', their leading scorer, Kenny Deuchar, won the 'Player of the Year' trophy and the club itself lifted the 'Fair Play Award', which we won last season. Stranraer manager, Neil Watt, won the Second Division 'Manager of the Year, and I was surprised when he mentioned in his speech that from the 30 S.F.L. clubs only six managers are still in their jobs since he took over at Stair Park. A frightening statistic! Had a long talk with Rowan Alexander after the awards. We didn't agree on everything but it was all very friendly and interesting.

Wednesday, 1st June. Back on the road once more and headed for Hampden again for an Extraordinary General Meeting of the S.F.A.. Sat down beside an extremely nice gentleman who turned out to be the representative of Glasgow Rangers before Geoff Brown of St Johnstone and David McGregor from Forfar sat down the other side of me. There was a huge turnout of over 80 and the main item under discussion was a proposal to allow extra teams to enter the qualifying rounds of the Scottish Cup. However, it was rejected for it was felt that more dialogue should take place before any decision was made.

P.S. Last night, Friday, I was invited along to Lochar Boys' Club prizegiving night to deputise for Jim Thomson who had to 'pull out' at short notice. And what an excellent evening it turned out to be! It was at Locharbriggs Social Club and Provost Kenny Cameron was there complete with his gold chain of office. I was absolutely amazed at what a professional club they are with teams from about eight-years-old and onwards. I met many Queens' fans and had a good old 'chinwag' with them. I was asked to present the prizes which was an honour and I thank everyone concerned with Lochar Boys' Club for their hospitality.

It's Albion Rovers again! 27th May 2005
In the first round of the Bell's Challenge Cup made at Hampden this afternoon, Queens were paired once again with Albion Rovers. The tie will take place at Palmerston on Saturday, 30th July. As all Queens' fans will remember, the Coatbridge side beat us 2-1 in the opening round of the C.I.S. Cup last season, so we can't afford any slip-ups this time.

Chairman David Rae echoed these words and added, "It's not the best draw but at least it's at home. However, we must win, for that defeat last year cost us dearly."

Shirt Draw Winners - Full Report 27th May 2005
The new name to grace the Queens' shirts next season will be 'Dumfries Body Repair Centre' who are based at Lockerbie Road, Dumfries. Much to the delight of partners, Alan McMichael and Kenny Sharkey, their name was first out of the drum when the ninth annual draw was made at the Palmerston Bar Lounge last night. It also proved a good night for local Insurance Brokers with three of them featuring in the prize list. A record entry of 153 (11 more than the previous best) netted the club a much appreciated sum of £53,550 which was very pleasing for Chairman, David Rae.

The draw was made by Lisa Scott, the wife of our manager, and the new season shirts were modelled by two of our up-and-coming stars, Richie Maxwell and Scott Robertson.

The full prize list read as follows: Shirt Sponsorship, Dumfries Body Repair Centre; League match sponsorship, Giles Insurance Brokers; Match day hospitality for a party of six, Klic Cars. Three Executive Club memberships went to: New Bazaar Doonhamers, E-teq and West Skelston Services and other winners were: Two adults to Boardroom and Directors' Box for a home match, James Steel Buildings; Autographed team shirt, Abacus Insurance; Autographed match ball, Gillespie, Gifford and Brown and a Matchday Mascot, Annandale Insurance Brokers.

Following the draw, manager, Iain Scott addressed the company and thanked everyone for "a fantastic response." He added, "At present all football clubs are finding it very tight financially. We are no different and we need more people through the gate. Last season was a tough one but we hopefully proved ourselves by finishing fourth in the table--our best ever placing in the present First Division. Next season will again be a big one, but with your support we hope we can take Queen of the South that one step further. We're a 'Community Club' and if any company or business out there needs our help, don't be afraid to contact us and we'll do our utmost to accommodate you if we can."

Said the Chairman, "A record entry! 153 x £350--you can work that out for yourselves. Over £53,000, and that means such a lot to the club. We had only about 90 at the weekend but they came in 'thick and fast' after that. Once again, a big 'thank-you' to all concerned and congratulations to the winners."
