Sean's back 31st January 2006
Sean O'Connor signed his contract this morning which makes him a Queens' player once again through to the end of the season. Speaking to the 'Website' this afternoon Sean said, "I'm very happy to be returning to Palmerston. I spent almost two years with Queens before signing for Morecambe and, apart from my time out injured, I enjoyed every minute of it. They're a good club and the Queens' fans were always most supportive. I also know most of the lads--Jim Thomson, Eric Paton, Colin Scott, Derek Lyle, Steve Bowey and John O'Neill, to name but a few, and now Andy Aitken's back as well. So it's not like I'm joining a new club.

"After my operation next week I'm hoping to be back for the last couple of months of the season but it's not always easy to put a timescale on things like that. But one thing I know, it going to be difficult getting back into the squad itself far less getting a starting place. Three new strikers have come in during the 'window' and there's also Del Lyle and Gary Wood. So with six strikers battling for two places up front competition's going to be 'hot', but it's healthy and can only be good for the club.

"I watched the game when I was up on Saturday and Graham Weir and Andy Thomson looked good together. I was also impressed by Michael Mullen when he came on as sub. So all I can do is work hard and prove to the manager I can justify a place".

Sean has never hidden the fact that he and his girlfriend, Sarah, would like to return north of the border. However, he insisted, "That's the long-term plan. I'm only here to the end of the season, so we'll see how it goes. But we won't be rushing into any rash decisions".

During his previous spell with Queens, Sean netted 26 goals in 48 outings--a fantastic scoring ratio. If he could match that on his return every Queen of the South fan would be highly delighted.

No more new signings 31st January 2006
After bringing in seven new faces over the past three weeks manager, Ian McCall, admitted this evening that it's highly unlikely any more will be signed before the 'window' closes at midnight tonight. Two proposed deals, a defender from St Johnstone and a winger from Kilmarnock fell through this afternoon, so we'll have to be happy with what we've got.

Meanwhile, defender Stuart Hill has had a 'change of mind' about leaving. He now intends staying on and fighting to get his place back in the first team squad.

Ian McCall confirmed this evening that Sean O'Connor was back through at Palmerston today and stated that, "He'd been made an offer". Added the manager, "We realise Sean won't be able to play until late February or early March owing to some minor surgery coming up, but he's mulling over the 'offer' and we're hoping to get an answer back tonight after training".

Ian also said that there may be another defender coming in before the 'window' closes tomorrow night but wasn't prepared to name names at the moment. He did admit that Brian McLaughlin had been in talks with a couple of clubs and could be leaving shortly and Brian Reid is another big name who may also be departing.

Young defender, Stuart Hill, has still to sign release forms which would make him a 'free agent' but the manager completely 'scoffed' at a report in a Sunday newspaper that Ian Harty was set to be joining Queens.

With no game on Saturday it was hoped to arrange a 'closed doors' training match on either Thursday or Friday, but if the 'big freeze' continues it's highly unlikely it will take place. The reserves were due to meet Stenhousemuir (away) tomorrow night, but again this game is doubtful owing to the weather.

Regarding the Ian Harty speculation chairman David Rae stressed this afternoon, "We haven't spoken to Ian Harty; we haven't spoken to his agent; we're not interested in Ian Harty and he won't be signing for Queen of the South. I can't be any clearer than that.

Chairman's Message 29th January 2006
Our league position hasn't altered since my last programme notes, but we now have several new players signed and once they gel I'm looking for a big improvement. One thing we do have in our favour--four of our next five matches are at home, so the ball's firmly in our own court. One of those newcomers is Andy Thomson who is well known to all of us. He first joined Queens in 1989 and in a five year spell netted an incredible 109 goals in 185 games. The only others to have bettered that were two of my own boyhood idols, big Jim Patterson and Bobby Black. Andy was transferred to Southend United in May 1994 for a club record fee of £250,000--so we owe him a lot. He scored on his debut at Dingwall on Saturday, and I hope it's the first of many.

I was very disappointed to lose the cup replay at Hamilton for, had we won, it would have given us a great chance of progressing to the quarter finals and getting some much needed cash into the bargain. I couldn't in any way fault the effort of our players who 'ran themselves into the ground', but it still wasn't quite enough. Once again a big 'thank-you' to our tremendous travelling support of nearly 700 who cheered us on from start to finish.

After the game I was chatting to my Hamilton counterpart, chairman Ronnie McDonald in the Boardroom and he told me something that was absolutely true. He said, "Davy, it's all to do with full-time and part-time football. Earlier in the day your lads were probably working then had to drive up to the game. Our boys on the other hand were relaxing, resting and some of them would possibly have a 'long-lie' in bed in preparation for the match. It makes all the difference and it showed up in extra-time". You know, he was 'spot-on' and I had to agree with him 100%.

There have been rumours circulating that the planning permission granted recently for our ground improvements has been 'shelved'. Well I can tell you all right now--that's simply not true!. That planning permission was passed and is valid for five years. I did say that work wouldn't commence as long as we were in the Scottish Cup. I know we're out of it now but at the same time I also stated that we wouldn't be starting until all the necessary funding was in place, and that hasn't happened y

Today we welcome Airdrie United back to Palmerston and though I hate to admit it, they're the only team we've managed to beat in the league this season. So, needless to say, I'm hoping for a repeat performance this afternoon. A warm welcome also to all our sponsors and to our young match day mascots on duty today.

Match reaction 28th January 2006
After 16 hours and 1,470 minutes of football Queens eventually got the long awaited victory all the fans had been praying for. And both Stranraer and Brechin losing came as an added bonus. For a change it was Queens who got off to a good start in the tenth minute, John O'Neill making no mistake from the penalty spot after Graham Weir had been brought down in the box. But it was real 'backs to the wall' stuff in the second half as Airdrie threw everything forward in a 'sea of red shirts' . However Queens weathered the storm and following a breakaway in the 75th minute Paul Burns slotted home from close range to finish off a good move. It was also Ian McCalls first win since taking over the reins in November and he was absolutely delighted.

Said the manager, "That's my 'first win under the belt' and I trust it will be the first of many. But it's not about me personally it's all about Queen of the South. We started really well and should really have been three up in the first fifteen minutes and could well have been punished for the chances we missed. In the second half we lost the place a bit and got hemmed back in our own half for a long spell. The players and the fans got a bit edgy but when Paul Burns netted the second I was confident we' win. I was pleased for the players who all worked very hard and I'm hoping now we can build on this win. Both Brechin City and Stranraer lost which is a big help but their's still a lot of work to do".

Sponsors Man of the Match Andy Thomson was also happy to collect the three points. Said Andy, "We started really well but fell away in the second half. But we still won 2-0 and in football the result is the main thing. For a spell in the second half we were 'hanging on' but then we broke up field, Burnsy scored and that settled it. I feel Graham Weir and I are building a decent partnership up front - he's an intelligent player and fights for every ball.

"It's good to be 'home' again, there's loads to play for and I only hope I can do my bit and help Queens move up the league".

Note
An interested spectator at the match was Sean O'Connor and after talks Ian McCall says he's hopeful of signing him at the beginning of next week.

Ackers signs up 27th January 2006
Andy Aitken signed on the dotted line to become a Queen of the South player once again at 4.00pm this afternoon after getting a release from Gretna this morning.

Andy said, "I'm ecstatic to be coming back to Palmerston and hope I can help Queens avoid relegation. I spent many happy years with Queens and I still know Kenny Crichton and most of the players. I think there's the nucleus of a good squad there and I'm looking forward to tomorrow."

Signing talks resurrected 27th January 2006
Following last week's news of Andy Thomson's return to Palmerston, he could soon be followed through the door by two other former Queens' favourites, Sean O'Connor and Andy Aitken. It was thought that negotiations with both were 'dead and buried' but talks are now ongoing again.

On O'Connor, Ian McCall said this morning, "Sean has now been released by his club, Morecambe, which have made things a bit easier. He's keen to play for Queens again so he's coming up for the Airdrie game tomorrow and we'll talk after the match and try and hammer out a deal. He has a 'clean up' operation on his knee due on the 9th of February, and he'll take a couple of weeks to recover fully, but following that he should be available to play again. This recent operation has nothing at all to do with the serious injury sustained during his previous spell with Queens".

Added the manager, "Although he's a free agent now, for safety's sake, we'd like to get him signed up before the 'window' closes at the end of the month. It would be a short-term contract to the end of the season, but we'd then wait and see how it goes. However, a fit Sean O'Connor would be a massive boost for the club.

"As far as Andy Aitken's concerned, we made him an offer last night--a two and a half year contract. He's gone back down the road to discuss it with Gretna who have been most helpful. We're hoping to hear back from him today and if an agreement can be reached he'd go straight into the squad for tomorrow's game. Andy is a quick, powerful defender at the right age and that's exactly what we're looking for. He was seven years with Queens before and knows quite a few of the players. He made 275 first team appearances and was also captain for a spell".

Andy Aitken 26th January 2006

Andy Thomson 26th January 2006
In an exclusive interview for the 'Website' tonight, Andy Thomson admitted how happy he was to return to Palmerston and recalled some memorable moments from the past.

Said Andy, one of the club's most popular players, "It's been a long time since I left but it's good to be back again. Things have changed quite a bit while I've been away--a new stand, a completely new set-up and a more modern type of training system. When I was first approached I thought about it for a bit as I had a few 'loose ends' to tie up at Falkirk. But I decided it was the right move at the right time. At Falkirk I wasn't getting a regular game and I wanted to play first-team football. So, at Palmerston I hope this will happen, but I know it's all up to myself".

When he first arrived at Palmerston in 1989 he was a raw lad of only 18, but in a five year spell he netted 109 goals in 185 games--a remarkable scoring record. So, the million dollar question, could he continue where he left off?. "I'd love to maintain that kind of scoring rate" he replied, "But it will take some doing. I'm 34 now but once a striker, always a striker. The reflexes may not be so sharp and the pace a bit slower but it's all about positional sense, being in the right place at the right time. I like to think I rely more on movement and speed over those first few yards now, rather than pace and power. I scored on Saturday in my debut at Ross County and it's always encouraging to get 'off the mark' for a new team. I hope it's the first of many".

We reminded Andy he was the third highest goal scorer in the club's history with only Jim Patterson (251) and Bobby Black (120) ahead of him. "I wasn't aware of that fact" he laughed, and joked, "I might catch Bobby Black, but no way Jim Patterson".

Looking back at his memorable past at Palmerston, Andy remembers, "It was Billy McLaren who signed me. He could be quite fiery at times but was still a great manager. Norman Blount was an excellent chairman and looked after me well and guided me through my transfer deal with Southend United when I left Queens. Some of the players I looked up to then were Jimmy Robertson, a great ball player; Steve Mallan, who would 'run through a brick wall' and wee Henry Templeton. The games I recall most were in the Skol Cup campaign of 1990. We beat Montrose, then Dundee, then Premier League Dunfermline in extra-time. Ian McCall was actually playing for Dunfermline that night--I wonder if he still remembers it?. We then went out, losing 2-1 to Celtic at Parkhead, I think it was in the quarter-finals, but it was a cup run I'll never forget".

So what does the future hold?, was our final question. "To help Queen of the South retain their First Division status" was the immediate answer. And so say all of us!.

Airdrie at Palmerston 25th January 2006
It's Airdrie United again on Saturday--the only team we have managed to beat in the league this season. It was on the 15th of October when a late goal from Paul Burns earned us the points but Airdrie gained apt revenge at New Broomfield two months later with a convincing 4-0 victory. With four of our next five games at Palmerston, it's now 'make or break' time for Queens. If by then we could close the gap on Stranraer to three or four points, we then have the Stair Park side at home on the 18th of March. So, what a 'battle royal' that would be then!.

With five new players already on board and two or three more expected, the fans will be looking for 'big things' in the coming weeks. What they'd love to see now is the exciting prospect of Andy Thomson and Michael Mullen as the 'strike force' up front and, at the back, the defence strengthened up. More goals scored and less conceded would add up to more points and happier fans.

On the match itself Ian McCall said, "Sandy Stewart's got them playing well and in our last meeting up at Airdrie they were much the better team. They've a few suspension problems at the moment but they'll still be hard to beat. However, we've got to start winning and quick!. Four of our next five games are at home and I'm looking for nine or ten points from them".

Still on the hunt for new players the manager added. "There's a few things going on at the moment but I'll have a clearer picture of how they're progressing by tomorrow".

Far travelled 24th January 2006
While we at Queen of the South were bemoaning the long trip to Ross County on Saturday spare a thought for our local rugby team, the Dumfries Saints. In their major competition, the B.T.Shield, they were drawn against Orkney--a whole lot further. At least the team and many of their fans had the luxury of a jet plane for the main part of their journey and another bonus--they won!. However, well done and good luck to them in the next round.

Match reaction 21st January 2006
With all five new players in the squad including the three new strikers so much was expected from Queens at Dingwall this afternoon. Unfortunately it was the same old story - no points, three goals conceded and a comfortable 3-1 victory for Ross County. So the faithful band of loyal Queens fans who made the trip north face a long miserable journey home tonight. Ian McCall put yesterday's signing Andy Thomson on from the start and the striker did find the net in the 74th minute but again it was too little too late.

However the manager wasn't too downhearted at the final whistle and said, "Despite the score there were still a lot of positives out there today. Andy Thomson had a terrific debut and linked well with the others up front. Michael Mullen again impressed when he came on and had one great strike when the score was at 3-1. Of the other new boys Ryan McStay had a good second half but Graham Weir was a bit disappointing and still lacking in match practice. However the defence was very poor. I'm not defending them but that 120 minutes at Hamilton in midweek took its toll and it was obvious that the 'legs just went'. In the early stages of the first half we actually played quite well and passed the ball about with confidence but again they got that all important first goal. I'm still after three new players, another striker and two defenders and I'm hoping to get them in before the window closes."

The only other positives we cling to were - both Stranraer and Brechin City lost at home today and four of our next five games are at Palmerston.

A Factfile on Andy Thomson

One of Queen of the South's all time greats, Andy Thomson, rejoined the club this afternoon. In his previous five year spell at Palmerston Andy netted an amazing 109 goals in 185 games before moving to Southend United for a club record tranfer fee of £250,000.

NEW FACES 4--Ryan McStay 20th January 2006
As a Bellshill boy, born and bred, it's no surprise that Ryan supported Celtic as a youngster and one of his favourite players in those days was none other than our own Brian McLaughlin who made almost 100 appearances for the 'Hoops'. Ryan recalls, "Like myself Brian was born in Bellshill and over the years I've got to know him quite well. He was a great player at Celtic with superb ball control so I'm now looking forward to playing in the same team as him at Queen of the South".

Although only 21 Ryan has been at Falkirk for 10 years, having joined them as an 11-year-old, and has made over 30 first team appearances for the 'Bairns'. He added, "Andy Thomson told me he'd had a most successful time at Palmerston as a young player and spoke very highly of Queens. He said it was a real 'family club' and I would enjoy myself there. Little did I know at that time that Andy would be joining me at Dumfries a week later.

"I was actually down playing at Palmerston with Andy just recently in a training match. Queens were very impressive that night and beat us 5-2 with Gary Wood getting a 'hat-trick'. Palmerston Park is an older and more traditional ground compared to the modern open-ended stadium at Falkirk but it has a good atmosphere when there's a big crowd.

I played twice for Falkirk down there last season, winning one and drawing the other, and when it's not too wet it's a good playing surface".

With a name like McStay, are you any relation of Paul McStay the Celtic legend we asked Ryan?. "I was told by a relative once that he was a distant relation" he replied. "I'd like to think it's true but, unfortunately, I've no real proof".

One of his favourite players today is Liverpool skipper, Stevie Gerrard."He's fantastic" says Ryan. "If I turn out half as good as him I'd be happy".

A spectator at the cup replay at Hamilton on Tuesday night was Brian Rice, assistant manager of Falkirk. He spoke very highly of young Ryan and promised, "He's a great lad and he'll do a good job for you down at Palmerston".

Andy Thomson signs 20th January 2006
Queens fans will be pleased to know that Andy Thomson was signed late this afternoon. His contract runs to the end of this season and he is eligible to play tomorrow if selected.

Ian McCall, said he was 'absolutely delighted and excited' to get Andy. Added the manager, "He's a proven goalscorer and that's what we've been looking for. Not only did he score loads of goals for Queens but he's done the same at practically every club he's been with".

There has been no further progress in talks with the young striker mentioned yesterday, however one player who will not be returning to Palmerston is our former full-back Andy Aitken who has been 'priced out of the market' by Gretna manager Rowan Alexander. Said Queens boss Ian McCall, "I was interested in Andy to strengthen our defence but Gretna wanted a fee for him so that basically 'killed the deal'".

The placings from the Hamilton cup replay at New Douglas Park on Tuesday saw Paul Burns win the award again with Stuart Lovell second and Steve Bowey third.

NEW FACES 3--Graham Weir 19th January 2006
Born in Harthill, North Lanarkshire, Graham was kicking a ball as soon as he could walk. He recalls, "It wasn't a very big town but very Ranger's orientated so it was only natural that I was a Gers fan myself as a youngster. Football was my first love and one of my proudest moments was when I was 'capped' for Scottish Schoolboys. I then graduated through the Scotland Youth squad and played for them at both Under-16 and Under-18 level".

He actually signed for Hearts at the early age of 16 and by the time he'd reached 18 was a regular member of the first team squad and had formed a formidable striking partnership up front with the renowned Mark DeVries. Graham made over 70 appearances for the 'Jambos' and says some of his most memorable matches were at Parkhead against Celtic.

In action on Saturday
He added, "When a loan move to Queen of the South was proposed a few weeks ago Robbie Neilson approached me in the Tynecastle dressing room and suggested I 'go for it'. Robbie told me that he had come to Queens 'on loan' four years ago and it 'kick-started' his career and when he returned to Hearts he was soon back playing Premier League football again and has never looked back since. He also said that Queens were a great club and convinced me it would be a good move. So, here I am!.

"I didn't know many of the Queen of the South players when I first arrived but they're all very friendly. But I couldn't believe my luck when Shaun Dillon turned up to sign on the very same day as me. 'Dino' and I were great mates and played together at international level for the Scottish Under-16s and Under-18s. So that was an added bonus. I'm looking forward to playing regular first-team football again and I only hope I can help Queens move up the table and stay in the First Division".

Bill Goldie
Caught Cold 19th January 2006
The 'caught cold' syndrome has cost Queens dearly in the past couple of weeks. In the cup-tie against Hamilton at Palmerston we conceded a goal in the first minute of the second half, a week later in the league only two minutes of the game had elapsed when we were caught out appealing for off-side and it happened again in Tuesday night's cup replay, Accies snatched what proved to be the winner in the first minute of extra-time. Is there a lesson to be learned here?.

Bill Goldie
First Goal 19th January 2006
As the weeks gradually roll on it's getting increasing obvious that we need to score that all-important first goal. Only three times this season have we managed it--in the Challenge Cup tie against Albion Rovers which we went on to win, 4-0, a last-minute strike from Paul Burns against Airdrie which gave us a 1-0 win and, of course, up at Ross County back in October. Dingwall was the only time we scored first away from home, but we were held to a 1-1 draw after ending up with only nine men. So, come Saturday, let's all hope for that opening goal and three valuable points to go with it.

Bill Goldie
Team News 19th January 2006
All four of our new signings, Graham Weir, Shaun Dillon, Ryan McStay and Michael Mullen are included in the squad for the long haul to Ross County on Saturday. But Gary Wood is again suspended as it's a league fixture. On the game manager, Ian McCall said, "We should have beaten them when we met at Palmerston. We played exceptionally well but 'gifted' them two late goals. Earlier in the season we drew 1-1 at Dingwall despite finishing with only nine man on the park. So they're not a team we fear, but they're fourth in the table and we'll be treating them with the utmost respect".

Looking back at Tuesday night's cup replay the manager stated, "We were on top in the first half and dominated the opening half hour. If we'd scored then I think we could have gone on and won it. Had we had an 'out-and-striker' in our side it would have made all the difference. I can't in any way fault the effort the players gave, they 'ran themselves into the ground' yet couldn't quite do it. The directors had put up a generous win bonus, so there were all to play for. However, at the end of the night there were only a lot of tired legs, a lot of broken hearts and a lot of empty wallets. But that's football for you".

"I would like to say once again a big 'thank you' to all the Queens' fans for the magnificent support. Around 700 for a mid-week match was absolutely brilliant and the vocal backing throughout the entire match was tremendous".

Signing Talks 19th January 2006
Ian McCall revealed this afternoon that he is currently in talks with two Premier League strikers. Said the manager, "I can't name them at the moment but one of them's young and the other not so young. And one them is well-known to Queens' fans". He added, "Talks with Sean O'Connor have hit a temporary snag. Sean's to go into hospital for a minor 'clean-up' operation on his knee so that has 'thrown a spanner into the works'. But we'll continue to monitor his progress and come March, if all goes well, we'll possibly re-start dialogue with a view to signing him for next season. I think a fit Sean O'Connor would be welcome back at Palmerston".

Just before half time Steven Archibald netted again to give the visitors and interval lead but that man Mullen popped up once again to level the score in the final minute. All four new signings got a run out and other first team regulars playing were Chris Carr, Willie Gibson, Stuart Robertson and Stuart Hill.

'Blue Army' praised 18th January 2006
The 'Blue Army' were out in full force for last night's cup-tie at New Douglas Park and earned praise from officials at both Hamilton and Palmerston. Said Hamilton secretary, Scott Struthers, "We were expecting around 300--400 tops, but 672 paid admission for the 'Spice Stand' and there were quite a few invited guests from Dumfries in the main stand as well. So, in total, there must have been over 700 there, and for a midweek match, that incredible. If I recall correctly, 480 is the most we've had up from Palmerston since our new ground opened. Apart from St Mirren and our local rivals, Airdrie, that's the biggest travelling support we've had all season. There were no trouble whatsoever, a credit to the club, and our stewards had an easy night. They'd be welcome back anytime, even the drummer and the trombone player.

"Now that they're out of the cup I sincerely hope that Queen of the South improve and move up the table for we at Hamilton don't want to see them go down. We enjoy the run down to Dumfries and the hospitality we get there and I'm sure Queens equally enjoy coming up here. It's only about an hour's drive and more or less like a 'local derby' for us both".

Queens' chairman, Davie Rae, was also quick to lavish praise on the travelling support and added, "Over 700 for a midweek match in the middle of winter is fantastic and, on behalf of the directors, management and our players--a big 'thank-you'. You backed us from start to finish and even outsung the Accies fans. I was proud of you all!. I'm naturally disappointed we didn't win but our players 'played their hearts out'. In the first half they never stopped running and by the final whistle they were literally 'out on their feet'.

"Despite our current league position I'm also glad that our 'hard-core' support, between 1500 and 1600, has stuck with us for the home matches. The one consolation of being out of the cup is the fact that we can now concentrate fully on the league. The four players who have come in all look promising and on talking to supporters on my travels I've heard nothing but good about them.

"If we all stick together I'm confident we can survive and with your continued support I think we can".

NEW FACES 2--Shaun Dillon 18th January 2006
Shaun hails from Greenock but, apart from a loan spell with his local side Morton last year, has spent his entire career with Kilmarnock. He signed as a 16-year-old and graduated through the Rugby Park youth system to make it into the first team. A talented young player who has twice been selected for the Scottish Under-21 squad.

Asked how First Division football compared with the Premier League, Shaun admitted, "It's not quite so fast and you get a bit more time on the ball, but it's still a good standard. I thoroughly enjoyed Saturday's game against Hamilton and I was happy I got a good 'star rating' in the Sunday newpapers. Just sorry we didn't win it though.

Shaun on Saturday
"I think I'll enjoy it at Palmerston. I sensed a friendy atmosphere in the dressing room the moment I walked in and I've settled down already. I feel quite at home for I know Colin Scott and big 'Reidy' quite well--also Graham Weir who signed on the same day as me. I'm just sorry I couldn't play in last night's cup replay at Hamilton, but there's plenty more games to come and I want to help Queen of the South pull away from the relgation zone".

Match reaction 17th January 2006
Queens battled bravely but tiredness beat them in the end when a slip by Tommy English in the first minute of extra-time saw Rudy Torres head home the only goal of the game. For the first twenty-five minutes Queens were on top but lacked penetration. However Accies gradually fought their way back into the match and were deserved winners in the end. Queens were cheered on by 672 vociferous fans in a crowd of 1,747 and all credit must go to them for their magnificent support.

Said manager Ian McCall afterwards, "Our lads put in a tremendous effort but ultimately it still wasn't good enough. I can't fault the fight but full time training certainly told in the end. In the early stages we passed the ball about well but never really caused them too much bother. They were on top in the latter stages and over the 120 minutes shaded it. A slip led to the only goal of the game but I feel it's gradually coming together for us and I'm still confident we can remain in the first division. I thought Stuart Lovell and Paul Burns were outstanding for us tonight Richie Barnard pulled off two tremendous saves but we'll have to work on those cross balls. Many thanks to all the Queens support. Almost 700 I'm told. They did their level best to lift us and it was greatly appreciated.

Said Hamilton manager Billy Reid, "Another hard game and it wasn't until late in the second half that we really took control. But once we scored I felt we never looked like losing."

Bill Goldie
NEW FACES 1--Michael Mullen 17th January 2006
Signing from a team with a name like Newmilns Vesuvus, Queens' fans are now awaiting with baited breath for Michael Mullen to erupt into action. 25 minutes against Hamilton on Saturday whetted their appetite and now they're asking for more. Although Michael has played in the Ayrshire Amateur League, on and off, for the past four years, he only joined the Newmilns side at the beginning of this season.

And what a remarkable scoring record this 'goal machine' has!. 42 goals in 13 games--it may be amateur football, but it still looks impressive. Said Michael, "I've lost count how many 'hat-tricks' I've had, but the most I've scored in a single game was six, which was quite recently. However, once, when I was in the Under-16 League I scored 12 in one game playing for Alton Hill B.C."

Michael in action on Saturday
Added the fresh-faced 21-year-old, "I'm delighted to get an 18 month contract for it gives we plenty of time to prove myself. I realise it's a big step-up from Ayrshire amateur football to the Scottish First Division but I'm really up for it. I'm looking forward to the challenge and I enjoyed Saturday's match although I wish I could have been on for longer. I just love playing football and scoring goals--that's what I thrive on".

Michael lives in Kilmarnock and is friendly with another promising Queens' prospect, Scott Robertson, who lives quite close to him. Welcome to Palmerston young man and here's hoping it becomes your 'Field of Dreams'.

Brian McLaughlin 16th January 2006
Brian McLaughlin has been told he's free to leave if he wishes but manager, Ian McCall insists, "There's no way he's being 'pushed out the door'. I rate Brian highly as a player but, at present, I can't guarantee him a place in the squad. However, if he 'buckles down', who knows, he could well be back in again. On the other hand, if Brian can find a club which can promise him regular first team football, and he himself wants to move, we wouldn't stand in his way".

A busy, busy week 16th January 2006
If Queens should lose tomorrow night it certainly can't be blamed on lack of fitness, for this week they have a schedule which would put any Premier League club to shame. Yesterday they had a training stint at Palmerston, this evening they have their normal Monday night training session and tomorrow the cup replay at Hamilton. On Wednesday night they may possibly have a 'closed doors' training match, on Thursday training as per usual and on Friday it's off up the road for Saturday's league encounter with Ross County.

Bill Goldie
New Signings 16th January 2006
It appears that all the new signings have impressed the vast majority of Queens' fans. Although Graham Weir and Ryan McStay are only loan deals the other two are here on a more permanent basis. Shaun Dillon has signed until the end of the season while Michael Mullen has signed an 18 month contract.

A big game 16th January 2006
After battling out two draws with Hamilton, the two clubs meet yet again--for the third time in ten days--when they clash in the Scottish Cup replay at New Douglas Park tomorrow. But one thing's for sure, one of must win this time around, whether it be in extra time or a penalty 'shoot-out', if required. Said Ian McCall this afternoon, "There's a massive 'carrot' dangling for ourselves but also for Hamilton and Alloa. With so many big teams already out there's never been a better opportunity for clubs from the lower leagues to progress to the quarter finals. I'd like to think that Queen of the South will be one of them, but there's a lot of hard work to be done before that happens".

Queens go into tomorrow night's game as 'underdogs' but after seeing some of the other third round results, that means nothing!. Who would ever have thought Clyde would knock out mighty Celtic; that Alloa would win at Livingston; that Airdrie would beat Dunfermline, that Gretna would knock out St Johnstone or that non-league Spartans would still be in the competition at this stage. There have been so many shocks in this round already, so let's all hope Queens can come up with another.

Bill Goldie
Team News 16th January 2006
Gary Wood will return to the Queens' squad for tomorrow night's cup replay at Hamilton. (Kick-off 7.45 pm). Also back is Steve Bowey who was 'dropped' on Saturday and, hopefully, Willie Gibson who was missing with a sickness bug.

Said manager, Ian McCall, "Willie phoned in on Saturday morning and said he had this sickness bug that's going around, so we didn't want him anywhere near Palmerston in case he passed it on to any of the other players".

None of the four new signings are eligible to play at Hamilton but they'll all be available for the trip to Ross County on Saturday.

Tomorrow night's match will be broadcast live on B.B.C. Radio.

Man of the match 16th January 2006
The placings from the Hamilton league clash on Saturday saw Paul Burns pip the new signings to win the man of the match award, Shaun Dillon was second, Ryan McStay third and Michael Mullen fourth in the voting.

All of the scores have been updated on the latest report page and the player of the season league table has also been updated. Thanks for voting.
From the Chairman 16th January 2006
What an exciting match last Saturday's game turned out to be and had us all 'sitting on the edge of our seats' right to the end. It was a typical cup-tie and after we'd equalised with ten minutes to go we had all the pressure and could well have won it. Whoever wins the replay will now be at home to Alloa.

This afternoon we welcome Hamilton Accies back again for a league fixture and then we meet up there for the cup replay on Tuesday. When the draw was first made there was always a chance of this happening--three games in the space of ten days. It's not the ideal scenario for, by the end of Tuesday night, we'll all be 'sick of the sight' of each other and I don't mean to be disrespectful in any way.

But how we could do to win today!. We've 15 league games left, 9 of which are at Palmerston, which is a big plus factor. Since Ian McCall took over full control we've played eight games but five of those have been away. The ones at home have been against the three top clubs in our league and I felt we could have won them all. We conceded two late goals to lose to Ross County, should have beaten league leaders St Mirren and could well have snatched a late winner against Accies last week. Our home form has been pretty good lately but I'll be first to admit we need to get results to go along with it.

I was pleased to see Scott Robertson coming on as sub last Saturday. I've been harping on at the manager about him for the past few weeks so I was delighted to see him get a chance and he didn't disappoint by laying on the equaliser for Del Lyle.

I'm glad to report that two of our young players, Willie Gibson and Paul Burns, have both signed two year extensions to their contracts. The pair of them are like 'chalk and cheese'. Willie, for instance, could be described as a 'manager's nightmare' and has Ian McCall pulling his hair out at times. Totally frustrating and unpredictable yet on his game has immense talent and skill and is capable of tearing any defence apart. 'Burnsy' is now 21 despite his youthful appearance. A modest and unassuming lad who never shirks a tackle. He's so helpful and obliging, always willing to visit schools for coaching and can communicate with the kids in their own language. Congratulations to another of our young players, 17-year-old Stuart McColm, who has been called up for the Scottish Schoolboys' squad to play in a series of international matches over the next three months.

In my previous notes I mentioned several staunch Queens' men who passed away last year. Regretably I omitted Lewis Russell, a former director and secretary, who served the club faithfully in the 1970s and 80s. Finally, a warm welcome as usual to all our sponsors and to our young mascots on duty today.

Ted benefit 15th January 2006
With the benefit game for former Queens hero Ted McMinn coming up soon between Derby County and Rangers the Rams are looking for stories of Ted for the matchday programme. We have received the following email from them so feel free to add something from a Queens perspective.

"Fans are being invited to share their memories of Ted McMinn for the ex-Rams favourite's benefit match brochure.

The publication will feature articles by Ted's former managers and team-mates in addition to archive action pictures and Ted's own story.

Supporters' stories will form a large part of the publication with fans encouraged to pen their own tales of the Tin Man.

Whether you recall a piece of wizardry on the wing or have a personal anecdote - we want your stories and will feature as many as possible in the glossy A4 68-page magazine to be published ahead of the match.

Your submissions can be anything from 20 to 200 words and can range from the sublime to the ridiculous - from memories of silky skills to silly stories about Ted on and off the pitch.

Your stories can be emailed to Tedtales@dcfc.co.uk or sent to Ted McMinn Benefit Brochure, c/o Damon Parkin, Derby County, Pride Park Stadium, Derby DE24 8XL. They should reach us no later than the end of February.

Derby County's Pride Park Stadium will host the game next May.

The match, on May 1, will feature a Glasgow Rangers 'Nine-In-A-Row' team against a Derby County select side including Rams heroes and guest star players.

Former Derby favourites who have already confirmed they will be ready to pull on a Rams shirt again include Kevin Hector, Roy McFarland, Peter Shilton, Mark Wright and Roger Davies. Ex-Rams boss Arthur Cox will manage the Derby County side.

Ally McCoist will feature for Rangers, alongside a host of players who formed part of the historic record-equalling nine-in-a-row Scottish Championship side which won consecutive titles from 1988-89 to 1996-97. Forty-three-year-old Ted, known affectionately to Rams fans as the Tin Man, was a popular player during his five-year spell with the club. He made 137 starts with a further 16 appearances as a substitute after joining Derby in February 1988 from Seville, and added 14 goals.

Ted has lived in Derby for the past 18 years and now works as a football pundit and co-commentator for BBC Radio Derby. He is currently recovering from a major operation, three weeks ago, which saw the removal of his right leg four inches below the knee.

The match will take place on Bank Holiday Monday, May 1, with a 3pm kick-off. Tickets are priced at £10 for adults and £5 for supporters aged 16 and under and 60 and over.

Tickets are available now at the Pride Park ticket office or by calling 0870 444 1884.

Ted McMinn biography

Arthur Cox landed the flying winger for £300,000 and was rewarded with a series of outstanding performances from the Scotsman, but in November 1989 - with McMinn on the verge of a call-up to the national side - he was struck by a serious knee injury.

He was out for 14 months but was back to his best form in 1991/92 when he was named as the club's player of the year, having almost helped them to an immediate top-flight return following relegation in 1991.

McMinn, now 43, began his career with Queen of the South in 1982 before a move to Glasgow Rangers two years later. He moved to Spain with Seville for a little over a year before being snapped-up by Derby.

He left the Baseball Ground in July 1993 and joined Birmingham City, and also had a spell at Burnley before ending his playing days with Joondalup City in Australia.

McMinn moved into management as assistant boss to Mark Wright, his former Derby colleague, at Southport, Oxford United and Chester City.

He also had a one-month spell as assistant manager at Mickleover Sports, at the end of the 2003/04 season. "

Match reaction 14th January 2006
Another 1-1 draw against the Accies but after conceding a goal in the second minute, which looked suspiciously offside, Queens came storming back and their fighting performance was warmly welcomed by the home fans.

Said , "I was happy at how we played, happy with the fight but again disappointed at the final result. Apart from the 'crazy' goal I think our performance in the first half hour was the best I've seen since I came here. The players said the goal was offside but I'll have to see it for myself on T.V. before I could comment. However we can't do anything about it now!

"Again there wasn't much between the two teams but I still feel we deserved all three points. I stressed before kick-off that we'd nine home games left and I was looking for six wins and three draws. I told them after the game - that's one of your drawn games gone. I've just heard the score in the Brechin City versus Stranraer match was a goalless draw. It was always a predictable result so we're no worse off apart from another game played. I thought all three new lads did well and Graham Weir could have scored early on but was a bit unlucky. They're all lacking slightly in match practice at the moment but I'm well pleased and I think they'll be good signings. As for Michael Mullen - the boy has talent, pace and bags of confidence, you wouldn't think a week ago he was playing in the Ayrshire Amateur league. If he'd gone on and finished off that amazing run with a goal it would have been real 'Roy of the Rovers stuff. Paul Burns was again excellent and thoroughly deserved his sponsors man of the match award.

Hamilton manager Billy Reid confessed a draw was again a fair result. But Billy admitted, "I was glad to hear the half time whistle for Queens were on top at that time but we got ourselves sorted out at half time and I think we were denied a 'stonewall' penalty in the second half. I think I'll have to play Paul McLeod in every game against Queens, he's only scored four goals for Hamilton and every one of them has been against Queens."

Stuart Lovell was delighted to find the net, "It was one of my better goals" he said,, "that's two I've scored this season and I've just been told I'm now second equal top scorer", he laughed.

A bubbly Michael Mullen said, "I thoroughly enjoyed the experience but I only wish I'd got on for longer. I found the Hamilton defence no harder than some of the defences in the Ayrshire Amateur league to get past."

As reported ealier today, Sean O'Connor could be a Queen of the South player again by tomorrow. He still figures prominently in the manager's plans for the future but there are still one or two 'loose ends to tie up' with his existing club, Morecambe. Sean signed for Queens from Dundee United in March, 2002, made 51 appearances for us and scored 25 goals prior to moving south in the summer of 2004. Eric Paton's waiting for you 'Sheepheid'.

Ian McCall hopes to bring in another three of four new players before the January 'window' closes. Said the manager, "I still need to strengthen up the defence and possibly another striker could be coming. So next week's going to be a busy one again. Four have left already and another couple might be leaving, but we hope not. However, two of our young players will be going out on loan to give them more experience. Ritchie Maxwell is moving to Dalbeattie Star while Gareth Campbell will join Ayrshire Junior club, Cumnock. Young Stuart McGrady was released last night and we wish him well for the future.

"I'm pleased to announce that Scott Robertson has now signed his new contract. It's a two year extension to his existing agreement and that takes him through to May 2008. He's big and strong and has lots of potential so I see a big future for Scott at Queen of the South".

New faces at Palmerston 12th January 2006

kilmarnocfc.co.uk
Queens expect to have three new faces in the squad to face Hamilton on Saturday.

Shaun Dillon, a left-sided defender from Kilmarnock has signed until the end of the season after being released in the 'windows' by the Rugby Park club. Greenock born Shaun, is 21, stands 5ft 10ins. and has been at Killie for just over five years having graduated through their youth side.
Another other new recruit is 21-year-old Hearts striker, Graham Weir, who is coming 'on loan'. Although not tall, he is a robust player with a good goal-scoring record. He too has been with his club for over five years and also came up through the club's youth ranks. A previous player 'on loan' from Hearts was none other than Robbie Neilson who proved a huge success. His four month spell at Palmerston actually 'kick-started' his Tynecastle career and he is now on the verge of a 'call-up' for the Scottish international squad. If Graham proves to be half as good as Robbie, that will do us fine!.

Hamilton again 10th January 2006
The fourth round draw of the Scottish Cup has given us the opportunity of a home tie against either Alloa Athletic or Livingston who meet tomorrow night. Said manager, Ian McCall today, "It's certainly not a 'money spinner', but at least it would be at home. Yet, to be honest, it's 'light years' away, for we've still to beat Hamilton in the replay and on the artificial surface that won't be easy.

"Sure, a good cup run would be nice for both the club and the fans, but my priority at present is the league and Saturday's game with Hamilton. We should have beaten them last Saturday for I felt we dominated for around 70% of the match. For the opening 20 minutes and the last half hour we were 'camped' in their half and Billy Reid was a happier man than me to hear the final whistle.

"Although they're hard to beat on their own patch their away record's not so hot and I notice they've only had one win in their last seven games 'on the road'. We've played well at Palmerston in our last three matches but haven't got the results we deserved but in our last three home games we've come up against the top three clubs in our league. Nevertheless, draws at home are not an option now if we hope to close the gap on Stranraer--wins are essential and that's what I've been stressing to the lads".

New players 10th January 2006
At the weekend the manager stated that he hoped he might have at least two new faces at Palmerston for the Hamilton encounter. Talking to the 'Website' this afternoon Ian admitted, "I had another talk with Sean O'Connor today but it will be tomorrow before I can say any more on that one. There's also another two or three I've approached--Graham Weir, a striker from Hearts; Stuart Taylor from Ross County plus a couple of others. We had a training match against Dalbeattie Star at the Keswick Centre last night and a 'trialist' played extremely well. He netted a 'hat-trick', so he too might come into the equation. Over the next couple of days I've four games to watch in the search for new talent. I'll tell you right now--a manager's work is never done.

"I'm delighted that both Willie Gibson and Paul Burns have signed two year extensions to their contracts which will take them through to May, 2008. Scott Robertson has also been offered an extra two year deal and he's looking through the proposed contract as I speak."

Chairmans' Message 8th January 2006
I'll like to start by wishing a 'Guid New Year' to one and all. One bit of good news is that there's far less likelihood now of matches being postponed at Palmerston owing to frost. We've purchased protective covering which will give the pitch protection up to minus 4 degrees C. and after losing the recent Dundee game and last season's Boxing Day fixture to frost, I'm sure it will be money well spent.

I'm not going to go on about our league position in any great lengths, but I can assure you that I feel every bit as bad as you, the fans, at our current placing. Talking about fans I want to thank you all for the tremendous support at both Clyde and Stranraer. There were 620 Queens' fans through at Stair Park in a crowd of 1096--their secretary couldn't believe it, but he was still 'rubbing his hands' as the money rolled in.

This afternoon we have a 'breather' from the pressures of the league campaign and welcome Hamilton Accies in the Tennent's Scottish Cup. We meet them again in the league next Saturday and, should we draw today and require a replay, we could well play each other three times in 10 days. Believe it or not but we haven't met Accies in the Scottish Cup for 43 years. It was in season 1962-63 and we beat them 3-0 here at Palmerston in the third round after victories over Inverness Caley (then non-league) and Kilmarnock.

We went out in the next round to Dundee United losing 4-0 at Ibrox in a second replay after two drawn games. It was a very severe winter that year and being a farmer I remember it well. No football was played at Palmerston from the 2nd of January through to the 11th of March--I bet they would have been glad or our new protective covering that season.

Hamilton's manager is Billy Reid who, as a player, spent several seasons with Queens. He was very popular with the fans and was actually voted 'Player of the Year' back in 1988 and was a member of the promotion-winning squad of 1986. I'm giving your age away here Billy!. Since moving from Clyde to Hamilton during the close season he has built up a competent side who are currently second in the table so we know we're in for a tough cup-tie.

On Tuesday, 13th December our A.G.M. was held at the Nith Hotel, Glencaple and my thanks once again to Keith and Joan Houliston for the use of their premises. There were 91 present and after the financial business was taken care of we had an interesting 'Question and Answer' Forum with Ian McCall in the Chair. I think this went down well with the shareholders.

A warm welcome this afternoon to the representatives here from Tennents. They have sponsored the Scottish Cup for many years now and I know it's greatly appreciated by every club in Scotland.

Match reaction 7th January 2006
In a day of 'shocks' in the Scottish Cup Queens came from behind to earn a hard fought draw against Hamilton at Palmerston. But it now means Queens and Hamilton will play each other three times in the space of ten days. Despite being hit by a 'sucker punch' only one minute into the second half Queens came storming back and Derek Lyle slotted an equaliser in the eighty first minute. Hamilton were the more relieved side when the final whistle blew.

Afterwards Ian McCall said he was 'gutted' at only getting a draw and it wont be easy at Hamilton in the replay. He added, "We started well and were on top in the first twenty minutes. They gradually drifted back into the game but the goal we lost was criminal. We'd warned the players of Mark McLaughlin's power in the air, but he lost his marker and it was made easy for him. I'm very angry at losing the goal when we did, however all credit to the lads. They pulled up their sleeves and came storming back and in the end I was disappointed we didn't win. We had home advantage and it was a game we should have won. In the last fifteen minutes we were 'all over them' and Palmerston was buzzing, that's what I like to see. When Willie Gibson came on it made all the difference. He has fantastic ability and I thought hat Paul Burns was also brilliant today. I'm pleased to say that both Willie and Burnsy have signed two year extensions to their contracts binding them to the club until May 2008. We play Hamilton again next week and I'm hoping to have two new players signed by then".

Tennent's 'Man of the Match' Willie Gibson thanked the manager for giving him the 'kick up the backside' he needed. Said Willie, "The boss pulled me aside on Thursday night at training and told me I was a bit flat at the moment and lacking confidence, he said I'd be on the bench on Saturday and when I did come on I felt I had something to prove. I was man of the match this time last year when I scored the winner in the Cup tie at Montrose so this bottle of champagne will go in beside last years bottle in my drinks cabinet." Willie appears to be making a habit of coming on as a sub and being man of the match. He did it against Queen's Park on his debut at Palmerston five years ago and he was only on for about thirty minutes that time.

Goalscorer Derek Lyle admitted he almost 'chickened out' when the chance fell to him. Said Del, "I looked up and saw three Hamilton defenders coming at me like a herd of Rhino's. But I got my header in quickly and came through unscathed. My last goal was against Ross County when I scored from thirty yards, today it was only a yard but they all count".

Said Hamilton manager Billy Reid, "We weren't under any real pressure until the last fifteen minutes and then it was 'backs to the wall' stuff, we scored at a good time, right after the interval, but I'll take the draw for we have home advantage in the replay."

Congratulations 6th January 2006
Congratulations to young Stuart McColm, a member of the Queen of the South youth pool. Stuart, who is 17 tomorrow, has been selected for the Scottish Schoolboys under-18 squad for a series of six matches which are to take place over the next four months. He comes from Drummore in the Mull of Galloway and for the past five years has been making the 160 mile round trip to Dumfries, three times a week, for training and matches. That's what you call dedication!.

Double at Annan
In preparation for the big games Stuart has been off on his travels with the Scottish party those past couple of days and took part in training games against Morton and Hamilton. On February 6th Scotland meet Australia in a friendly at Hamilton then it's on to an international Schools' Shield tournament involving three other countries. They play the Republic of Ireland in Galway on March 10th, England in Plymouth on March 24th and Northern Ireland at Dunbar on April 3rd. After that two more friendly games follow, both against Canada, and will take place at Banff on April 11th and at Keith, two days later.

Stuart started playing football for Drummore Primary School at the early age of five and has progressed from there. Mum, Karen and Dad, Donald are understandably proud of their prodigy but Donald added, "There are a lot of lads from our area who travel to Queen of the South to further their careers and Stuart has been one of the lucky ones. However, we're grateful to all the other parents who share the workload when it comes to travelling. It's a long way but Queens have an excellent set-up down there at Dumfries while Stranraer just don't have either the facilities or coaches to match".

Congratulations also to Former Queens' coach, Paul McGinley (better known perhaps as 'Skin') who has been named as the new manager of East of Scotland Premier League side, Dalbeattie Star. As a player he spent 14 years with Threave Rovers and also turned out for Tarff Rovers, Annan Athletic and Dalbeattie Star themselves in an illustrous career.

Up for the Cup 5th January 2006
This Saturday Queens have a break from the stress and strain of league football as they face Hamilton Accies in the third round of the Scottish Cup. We have already lost twice to Accies this season, 2-1 at home back in September and 5-2 at New Douglas Park in November. A 2-0 victory over Lanarkshire neighbours, Airdrie United, on Monday hoisted Billy Reid's side up into second place in the table but anything can happen in the cup and all Queens' fans will be looking for a home win and a good draw in the next round.

It's actually 43 years since we last faced Hamilton in the Scottish Cup when Queens won a third round tie 3-0 at Palmerston. It proved to be a marathon cup campaign that season, and we ended up playing 660 minutes of football yet never made it past the fourth round. In the opening round we beat Highland League side Inverness Caley, 2-0 (away), then defeated Kilmarnock 1-0 at Palmerston after a goal-less draw at Rugby Park. Following our victory over Hamilton we were drawn against Dundee United. A 1-1 draw at Tannadice saw a replay in midweek at Palmerston, and this also ended 1-1 (after extra time). However, in a second replay held at Ibrox, we were well beaten 4-0. I wonder how many of our older fans remember that.

Commenting on Saturday's game manager, Ian McCall said, "I'm really looking forward to this cup-tie for it gives the lads a break from chasing league points week in, week out. The Scottish Cup is always a special competition--it's the 'big one' as far as cups are concerned in Scotland and gives a lot of the smaller clubs the chance to 'pit their wits' against the top teams and make some money into the bargain. Just look at Clyde and Peterhead, I bet they're really looking forward to meeting Celtic and Rangers. It's always a great day out and I'm hoping for a big crowd. I'd love to beat Hamilton, get a top draw in the next round and give our fans something to sing about for a change. They deserve it!".

Busy, busy! 5th January 2006
The past few weeks have been extremely busy ones for Ian McCall as he attempts to strengthen his squad. Said the manager, "I've been 'working round the clock'. Take yesterday for instance, I spent practically all day on the phone talking to players, agents and managers. I've nobody signed yet, but ex-Queens' favourite, big Sean O'Connor, came up to Dumfries today to talk to me and it went very well indeed. Sean is currently with Morecambe but he and his girlfriend are keen to re-locate to Scotland which is something in our favour. He's gone back home to discuss matters with his current club but I'm hopeful Sean could be a Queen of the South player again by next Saturday. But nothing's certain in football and I'm not saying anything's definite until a contract's signed".

Team News 5th January 2006
Gary Wood is eligible to play against Hamilton on Saturday since it's a cup-tie and he could also feature in the event of a replay. However, after that Gary is suspended for the next three league games. At the time of writing Queens have no injury problems and hope to be at full strength.

Match reaction 2nd January 2006
Queens lost the battle of Stair Park this afternoon going down 1-0 to Stranraer. The all important counter came in the 66th minute when Stuart Lovell skied a clearance which fell awkwardly for keeper Richie Barnard who could only punch it clear but it fell for Lee Sharp and the Stranraer man hammered it home through a ruck of players. But all credit to Queens who fought to the bitter end and Derek Lyle should have equalised in the dying minutes but shot straight at their keeper. However it was again our inability to find the net which cost us dearly much to the dejection of the 620 Queens fans who made the trip west. The twelve point gap which has now opened up appears insurmountable but we still must fight on.

Said a disappointed Ian McCall after the game, "I think our big problem is the fact that our boys have forgotten how to win. I thought that we dominated for long periods of the match and all credit to the players who put on a good performance and showed they were clearly 'playing for the jersey'. To me young Paul Burns was my man of the match and considering we've come off the back of a grueling battle at Broadwood only 48hrs earlier I was proud of them. We had our fair share of chances out there today, particularly an effort from Gary Wood and Derek Lyle's volley near the end. In recent weeks I've seen us dominate three matches but come out of them with only a single point which is heartbreaking for us all."

A Stranraer view on the Local Derby 1st January 2006
It's the big South-West 'derby' on Monday, a match which is crucial to both Queens and Stranraer, but one person who is really looking forward to it is Stranraer assistant manager, Stuart Millar. Speaking to the 'Website' earlier this week Stuart stressed, "It's an important game and obviously one that we'd both love to win. It's our 'local derby' and I know fans on both sides put so much store on the result. We've already met twice this season and on each occasion it ended in a draw and personally, I felt it was a fair result on both occasions.

"At the start of the season I never thought for one moment that Queen of the South would be in the position they are. They've had three great seasons in Division One and finished well up the table every time. Last season they finished fourth, but as I said once before, I think they 'over-achieved' and have paid the penalty. I don't mean that to sound disrepectful, but they stuck with pratically the same squad and I feel that every club needs to 'freshen up a bit' in the close season. Like ourselves, they are a 'part-time' side, and even to remain up in the First Division for four seasons is an achievement in itself, for we know full-well how hard this league is. The last time Stranraer were promoted they came right back down again, so this time around we're hoping it's going to be different.

"Just like Queens and Brechin we know we're in this 'league of three' that they talk about, but we're top of it at present and that's where we intend to stay. If we ended up in eighth spot in the table both Neil Watt and myself would consider it a 'job well done'. We're only ten points behind Dundee at the moment but we're realistic and still more concerned at what's going on below us. We're nine points clear of Queens, but should they win down here on Boxing Day then it's a different ballgame.

"There's still 16 games to go and a lot of points to be won and lost so there's no way we're writing Queens off. However, I'd still rather be in our position than theirs. They now have Ian McCall at the helm and if there's one man who can turn the tide for them, it's him!. He's worked wonders with smaller clubs in the past and I think they've made a good appointment up there at Palmerston. I fully expect Queens' form to improve in the New Year once Ian gets some new players in.

"Our own form of late hasn't been too bad and Neil and I are particularly pleased at some of the vital points we've picked up away from home. We had a recent run of five draws on the trot before losing to Clyde with a last-minute goal. But it says a lot for the players who came bouncing back on Boxing Day to beat Hamilton 5-4, one of the biggest and strongest sides in our league.

"We're all looking forward to Monday's match and we're expecting a big following down from Dumfries. There were about 400 through for our last meeting and it helps make a good atmosphere. I fully expect the game to go ahead despite the unpredictable weather. We don't have many matches postponed at Stair Park--in fact Neil and I are now in out third season here at Stranraer, and we've haven't 'lost' a game yet owing to the weather".

Happy New Year 1st January 2006
A very Happy New Year to all Queens fans and other visitors to the Official Queen of the South website. On the pitch this season has so far been much less successful than we had all hoped for but we did enjoy a good end to the 2004/05 season back in May. With our new manager and some new players coming in over the next few weeks we will all be hoping for a rapid turnaround in fortunes. We have done it before, exactly thirty years ago to be precise when the introduction of only one player, Peter Dickson, was enough of a catalyst to see us turn the season on its head and escape relegation from a similarly perilous position.

Finally a massive thanks to all of the website contributors, all of them voluntary, who have continued to produce content that makes the site one of the most informative and up to date on the web. To Bill Goldie, Ewan Lithgow, David Gow, Ian Black and Bruce Wright a special thanks on behalf of Queens and all website visitors.

Match reaction 31st December 2005
Back in March Queens decided to release a young striker they had on trial, that player was Alex Williams, a noted goal getter who had made a name for himself at Morton. But how the club must rue that day! Alex went on to sign for Clyde and is now top scorer in the first division with ten goals to his credit. Four times this season he has scored against us with two of those goals coming in todays 3-0 defeat at Broadwood. He must now enjoy holding two fingers up to us. This afternoon, along with Stephen O'Donnell, he was 'tormentor-in-chief' and how Queens could have done with the goals he scored today.

Talking afterwards manager Ian McCall said, "We discussed it fully after the game and none of us felt it was a 3-0 game. I'm not saying we should have won but in my mind the final scoreline was not a true reflection on the play. In the early stages we were by far the better side and both Paul Burns and Jim Thomson could easily have scored. Their opener was yet another 'gift' which came from a bad pass-back from Willie Gibson. We keep throwing these silly goals and until we stop doing that it's going to be very difficult.

One plus point was the performance of wee Brian McLaughlin. He did well when he came on but he's not fully match fit yet. It was a hard battle on a big heavy pitch and I'm concerned at just how much it's taken out of the players before Monday's local derby with Stranraer. Nevertheless it's now a 'must win' game whether we like it or not. I can't see me having any new faces in for this week although I've been working round the clock. I've had a few refusals and although others have been willing to come I've got to be sure I get the right ones."

'Colly' to depart 30th December 2005
Midfielder, Brian McColligan, is the latest victim in manager Ian McCall's 'clear-out'. The ex-Celtic starlet was informed at training last night that he was being released--the third player to depart in as many weeks. 'Colly' joined Queens from Clydebank in July, 2002, along with his pal Eric Paton and made 91 first team appearances for the club. All at Palmerston wish Brian the very best for the future.

The manager's view 28th December 2005
Following our satisfying performance and result against St Mirren on Boxing Day, the news that Stranraer had beaten Hamilton 5-4 at Stair Park put somewhat of a damper on proceedings. And nobody was more disappointed than manager, Ian McCall, who admitted, "Yes, it certainly makes it a lot harder for us with the gap now opened up to nine points. But we have a game in hand, against Dundee, and if we could beat Stranraer on January 2nd, the picture wouldn't look as bad. However, we just can't sit back and wait for Brechin and Stranraer dropping points, we've got to start winning ourselves. I've been heartened by our last two displays at Palmerston against Ross County and St Mirren--we should have picked up six points from those matches but only managed one, so that's where the problem lies. Not winning games at home when we have the upper hand.

"This Saturday we travel to meet Clyde. Their new management team of Graham Roberts and Joe Miller have done exceptionally well since taking over in the close season and have surprised everyone. It's never easy at Broadwood but we've only collected three points on our travels so far, which is not good enough, and I'm looking for a big improvement in the second half of the season. We'll be without Gary Wood after his 'red card' on Saturday. I was considering an appeal but after watching the video footage I've changed my mind and I'll be dealing with Gary internally. He played really well prior to his sending-off and his presence will be missed. I think he'll be OK for the match at Stranraer and also the cup-tie against Hamilton, but after that I'm expecting he'll be suspended for a further three games which is a big blow.

"Brian McLaughlin could well make a return to the squad. I had hoped to play him in a match we'd arranged for this week but it had to be called off owing to the weather. Colin Scott should also be back after missing Saturday's game with a calf strain. Big Brian Reid returned to the side at the weekend after being out for three months with hamstring problems and did really well. He helped steady the defence and deserves a 'pat on the back' and it was good to see him get the 'Man of the Match' award.

"I'm looking forward to getting some new faces on board when the 'windows' open next week. I'm working 'round the clock' chasing players at the moment but it's not an easy job getting the right ones. I had two lined up but they both opted for clubs in the central belt--within 20 minutes travelling distance of their homes. Just how can you compete with that!. I was also talking to a Kilmarnock player but with Kris Boyd departing for Ibrox, Killie have now decided to retain him. However, I'll keep trying".

Thanks 28th December 2005
The link forged with youth side Lochar Thistle Boys' Club came in useful last weekend with Palmerston all covered over with the new protective sheeting. It certainly 'saved' the game with temperatures dipping to minus 6 degrees C on the Saturday night prior to the match, but left the players with nowhere to train for their Saturday morning session. But along came a 'Good Samariton' in the form of Lochar Thistle B.C. who offered the use of their excellent playing field at Heathhall. All the players were very impressed and both chairman, David Rae and manager, Ian McCall would like to personally thank the club for their co-operation and in particular Ross Corbett and Jim Swan for all their hard work in preparing the training ground.
